In that 8th session Seth gave us more material on fragments: “In some submerged manner all fragments of a personality exist within an entity, with their own individual consciousnesses. They are not aware of the entity itself…. The entity operates its fragments in what you would call a subconscious manner, that is, without conscious direction. The entity gives the fragments independent life, then more or less forgets them…. [...] Then Jane dictated a key sentence: “Fragments of another sort, called personality fragments, operate independently, though under the auspices of the entity.”

[...] Within another couple of sessions, however, he began to let “fragment” semantically yield to other terminology as he continued developing his material in ever-deepening discussions of personalities and entities, reincarnation, time, dreams, and other related subjects. [...]

(From the 58th session for June 1, 1964:) Ruburt and myself are offshoots of the same entity. [...] The entity was a particularly strong one, and many of its egos have made the decision to turn into entities … And now, my dear patient Joseph, may I tell you that you are also part of that same entity — and this is one of the reasons why I am able to communicate with you both.

“Individual life, or the life of the present individual, could be legitimately compared to the dream of an entity. While the individual suffers and enjoys his [or her] given number of years, these are but a flash to the entity. The entity is concerned with such years in the same manner that you are concerned with your own dreams … And as your dreams originate with you, arise from you, attain a seeming independence and have their ending with you, so an entity’s personalities arise from it, attain various degrees of independence, and return to it while never leaving it for an instant.

[...] When I say as I have that the overall entity [or whole self] is neither male nor female, and yet refer to [some] entities by definite male names such as “Ruburt” and “Joseph,” I merely mean that in the overall essence, the [given] entity identifies itself more with the so-called male characteristics than with the female.

[...] In Session 119, then, Seth comments on how Jane herself has an animus — the hidden male within — and on how Ruburt, that larger “male” entity of which she is a “self-conscious part,” contains an anima, or hidden female. [...] From this information I infer that the entity or whole self of each of us, regardless of our current, individual sexual orientation, contains its own counterbalancing male or female quality, whichever the case may be. Seth hasn’t said so yet — nor have we asked him — but I suspect that an energy gestalt like the entity is much more aware than we can be of its “hidden” opposite-sex form — or forms; for there may be many of them.

This is also responsible for the fact that it is difficult to understand how one personality, while retaining its individuality, can be a portion of more than one entity, and we will have more to say on that subject as we continue with the time concept.

Sometimes such cases are handled within another framework, in which Augustus would be considered possessed by an independent “evil” entity whenever Augustus Two took over. [...]

In such circumstances Ruburt would act as a sort of director, gathering together the subconscious energies of those with you, and making those energies available to any possible entity.

The energies would be transformed literally into electric patterns, which such an entity could then use. [...]
