Nevertheless it also partakes of the strange unity that unites all personalities beneath the camouflage pattern, while at the same time it is only partially connected to the camouflage pattern. In some respects art creations are a meeting of the dream world and the world of camouflage patterns, but in a deeper way art creations represent the appearance or materialization in the actual element of physical time of inner realities. Every effect of any kind, experienced by the human being, exists as a series of electrical signals and codes, that in themselves form a pattern that is an electrical pattern.

Thoughts are psychoelectric patterns, set up by the mind, and transformed to human codes by the brain.

Now when I said the problem lay mainly in the present, I did not emphasize past roots, where the patterns originated. It is the patterns themselves, regardless of their origin, that is now (underlined) important.

The pattern had always included a strong tendency of withdrawal superimposed and enforced upon a very spontaneous self. As a child he closed off the expression of emotion from his mother out of fear, and when the fear element becomes strong as it did later for a different reason, with Walt, and much later for a far different reason with you, the pattern was reasserted.

These idea camouflage patterns represent important if nonmaterial structures, and we will refer to them as idea camouflage structures from now on, since they are basic frameworks that control the actual physical camouflage patterns, and even supervise for you the extent to which such physical patterns can be constructed.

There are however many other camouflage patterns which do not exist as solid structures, but exist as ideas.

The habitual pattern or characteristic nature of the ego may then be led to refuse to accept an emotion, at the same time that a pattern has already been set to receive the particular type of emotion. [...]

Inclinations with which the ego has very little liking, for example, are very seldom a problem for the ego, since they remain generally outside of the ego pattern, never having been chosen by it to form a characteristic part of the ego pattern. [...]

[...] The man, or ego, who has never really accepted such violence as a part of his action pattern, will usually have no conflicts in this particular line, simply because the inclination was never a strong part of the ego’s inner image, and is more or less discarded automatically, along with all those other characteristics or inclinations which are not in his ego pattern.

[...] This involves a transfer of conscious energy from a home system to an alien one, and certain more or less automatic changes must be made from system to system, involving the use of brain waves; certain patterns being normal in different systems. There are other brain patterns for example than those discovered by your scientists. The brain patterns simply reflect the kind of mental or psychic activity, and other kinds of activity will give you different patterns.

The drugs also help in changing the patterns when it is necessary. If the brain patterns were not changed on entering and leaving a system, then theoretically at least the consciousness could become trapped within any given system. [...]

Illness in many ways is a learned response, and it follows patterns set up in the system having to do with memory banks, though we shall find a better word here.

Concepts fit together in patterns in order for there to be communication between us. I must disentangle a concept from its pattern, which is somewhat difficult. [...] I experience patterns made up of concepts, and you use words in associations.

You see, to me these things are closely associated and connected in an overall concept pattern, and yet I must give them to you one at a time, and take pages to make the connection clear. One of mankind’s weaknesses has always been his impatience and his preoccupation with camouflage patterns on his plane. [...]
