“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

(This is the first session Jane has held since giving the deleted one for last January 7. Once again, she was very uncomfortable as she sat in her chair across the coffee table from me. [...] Her bodily condition presented rather large contrasts: Her upper body was very relaxed, her eyes bleary. [...] Her backside was sore, as well as her hips and inner thighs at the groin; she couldn’t move forward easily. [...]

[...] I told her I was primarily interested in but two things, both personal: her reactions to Mass Events and God of Jane in connection with her symptoms, and what was going on in her backside and hips. [...] I wanted to hear from Seth something about why her body was taking so long to respond in those areas.

He was taught to be very cautious lest that livelihood be taken away. [...] (Long pause.) He was worried that his natural expression and search, publicly expressed at that point in history, was dangerous because it put him in the gaze of a growing band of fanatics on the one hand, and also roused old fears of a private nature, having to do with the overall validity of revelatory information. [...]

(“I was hardly aware of my ass or anything else,” she said. [...] She wanted to know what would happen to Seth’s book on dreams in the meantime, and I explained that it would only wait until the other project was finished. After all, it was waiting now for us to get back to it.

[...] This was all he had to look forward to. That was his inner thought, and this was interpreted literally.

[...] Consciously he was pleased. [...] He was pleased with the raise on a conscious level, but felt it blood money.

[...] Was it a poor idea of mine to insist that Jane finish the dream book before sending it out again?” [After it was twice rejected.])

(Jane had voiced these thoughts while getting supper this evening; it was the first time I had heard her speak this way. [...]

Now lately the hand has improved because the envy itself was given direct expression through the itch. [...] This was a more direct, less involved, less frightening symptom, a localization in other words. The envy being realized subconsciously for what it was, isolated in such a manner, meant that the hand need no longer falter.

[...] He also felt guilty however at being taken care of, for the stiff neck was also therefore a punishment. He feared he was being taken care of as his mother was; and that you must resent it symbolically, as he resented it, taking care of her, and therefore the bed difficulty.

[...] This was one of my main reasons for suggesting strongly that you buy the specific property, a while back. Such a procedure would have satisfied a strong demand of your nature, but it would not have isolated you to an unhealthy degree, since it was close by.

(It was about 10:53. [...] I was very pleased to obtain the above material, for it confirmed what I had learned on my own through using the pendulum this week.)

(Jane’s delivery was now getting lighter and slower, almost as though she was drifting off to sleep.)

[...] You see Ruburt has accepted you as an extension of the super-conscientious self, and your word was added to the taboos already set up. Therefore a mystical import, a magical import, was given to your every word.

[...] He was made to feel unworthy and unwanted by his mother, and it was the spontaneous self who took the brunt of this. [...]

The grandfather was as rigid in his way as the grandmother. He was afraid of his own thoughts as a child, believing that thoughts could kill. [...]

[...] For example, a well-intentioned woman was here recently. She worried about her overweight condition, and [was] depressed at what she thought of as her lack of discipline in following diets. [...] She was afraid that she might discover within herself the buried impulse to kill her husband, or to break up the marriage, but she was sure that her overweight condition hid some unfortunate impulse.

[...] She could say it was because she was overweight, after all, for he was always remarking adversely about her fleshy opulence — though he did not use such a sympathetic phrase.

[...] Remembering well the barrage of negative suggestions that passes for preventative medicine — the public service announcements about cancer — she was filled with foreboding. She went to the doctor, who told her he did not believe there was anything wrong. He suggested X-rays, however, “just to be on the safe side,” and so her body was treated to a basically unnecessary dose of radiation in the name of preventative medicine.

[...] I’d told Jane this morning that I knew the dream was quite significant in connection with the work we’re doing with the Seth material, but that I was unable to adequately decipher it. [...]

(Jane had produced her statement so quickly that after reading it I was left with several questions. [...] Yes, she had been in an altered state of consciousness during her reception of The Way Toward Health “on a real high” — both while the outline for it was coming through and while she wrote her description of the process. No, she hadn’t heard Seth, or sensed his presence while this was going on; she’d just realized that his help would be necessary if she decided to do the book. Nor was it connected with “Unknown” Reality. “I wrote down what I could snatch from the whole book,” she said, “but I knew that what I got was nothing compared to what was there. If I could have immediately spoken the whole thing, it would have been done at once — that’s what was so frustrating! While I was in the altered state, I sensed not only the physical bulk of the book, but the actual contents within it. [...]

[...] She added that her experience in “getting it” was related not only to her ability to sense that sometimes more than one stream of material was available from Seth, but to the way that she herself had tuned into the information on neurological speeds late last month. [...]

(The following material is, in part, an outgrowth of certain effects described in Personal Reality; see my notes for the 616th session, bridging chapters 2 and 3. That session was held on September 20, 1972, and the notes I’m referring to concern a new development in Jane’s abilities: her initial realization that on at least some occasions she would have more than one channel of information available from Seth. [...]

(As quickly as she could once she became aware of what was happening that Sunday morning, Jane typed a 3-page summary or outline of the contents for The Way Toward Health, including chapter headings, then wrote a very condensed statement about how the whole thing came to her. [...]

[...] Therein lay one of those clues that was right in front of us, yet invisible at the same time. [...] This pattern was most pronounced while Seth was producing Mass Events, but without checking at the moment we remember similar if shorter layoffs while the previous books were being produced. This has always bothered me to some extent, but I usually told myself that was Jane’s way of working, and to forget it. [...]

[...] I did not know whether Jane would have a session or not—yet I was still somewhat surprised when she did offer to hold one tonight. [...] She was still very uncomfortable each day as bodily changes swept through her. [...] Instead the elbow was full of fluid. Was this the latest attempt by the body to heal itself by flooding afflicted areas with soothing liquid, say as lubrication, or what? [...]

(I told her the session was excellent, as I’d known it would be. [...] “I had the feeling that he was going to get into deeper stuff.” [...] There was a day’s accumulation of them in the sink. The bitter wind banged the metal awnings outside; the local forecast was for a temperature of zero degrees to five/ten below. [...]

(As soon as I reread her paper the evening before last, I was reminded of the two excerpts I’d copied from recent deleted sessions—those for January 26 and 28, 1981. In them Seth briefly explained how Jane had created her symptoms as protection against the spontaneous self going too far: this fear was the real reason for the symptoms—not, as we usually thought, her fear that she would do other things besides work if she had normal mobility. [...] Again, without checking, I think that an examination of our records would show that her symptoms flared up, indeed worsened, as she worked on each Seth book, and that behind her labors on each book there lay this fear that she was going too far with each one she produced. [...]

(The session was held in our front room, and was free from interruptions. [...] As is often the case with witnesses, her delivery was much more active. Although her eyes remained closed for the whole session, her voice was loud and at times quite a bit deeper than usual. She was very restless in her chair, changing position often. [...]

(John Bradley, of Williamsport, PA, was a witness to the session. [...] Indeed, John was the first to witness a session, on February 18,1964. The last session he witnessed was on February 24,1965. See Volumes 1 and 3. John was in an excellent mood tonight.

[...] Jane was fully dissociated. [...] The delivery was totally unexpected, she said, a complete surprise to her. I was also surprised. [...]

Nevertheless, I did not do so, and I feel duty bound to mention the fact that Ruburt’s performance was dishonest, and there was no good reason for it. [...]

The original man may have been assassinated, another taking his place, carrying on as if there had been no change as far as the populace was concerned. Poison was the usual method, and even those who suspected the truth would not dare speak out.

You must also understand that politics was a legitimate hand of the church in those days, and a churchman was expected to be an excellent politician. [...]

[...] The affair was a great success.

[...] When I wondered if I was right in thinking it likely that Seth’s papal incarnation took place in the fourth century, Jane said she “got” the year A.D. 325. [...]

[...] Jane was not nervous before the session, and again did not begin dictating until 9:01. Again, her voice was quiet and deliberate, and she used many pauses. By contrast, her pacing was quite rapid at the beginning of the session, and remained so until near the end. [...]

His powerful basic insecurity was caused by a broken home, and a situation where he was also thrown into alien cultures; not only was he unsure of belonging to a family, but also felt he had no cultural or national belongings.

(My writing hand was now very tired, for the last part of the session had been quite fast. Jane told me that Seth was still with us. [...] It was simply whether the heating system, which I had accepted without alarm as being okay, would have performed better for us than the previous tenant. [...]

[...] It might be added that the letter referred to above was one received from the regional office of the Veterans Administration, in N.Y.C.: The letter characterized the dirt road leading up to the property as a “trail,” and stated the request for a loan was denied unless the veteran, meaning myself, could be assured that the road would be maintained by either city or county at no additional expense to the veteran. [...]

(After today’s session — the first since February 22 — I told Jane that my plan when she resumed sessions was to type the session material only, and not the daily notes about her physical condition, temperature, and so forth, unless there was something out of the ordinary to note. [...]

[...] He asked how Jane was, asked about her work, and books, and commented quite positively on her recovery from the recent infection and fever. “She’s very resilient, isn’t she?” he said, and I could tell that he was very pleasantly surprised and pleased at Jane’s performance. [...]

(Jane was pleased to hear my account of the meeting. [...]

(Jane’s Seth voice was a bit stronger than usual, and carried what seemed like extra energy.)

[...] Jane explained that the motion of my hand as I wrote was related to the sounds of automobiles passing the house; the rhythmic noises of her rocker were sensually connected to the feel of her slacks beneath her hand; when she ran a finger down a fold in them “amplified long sound” was produced. She was especially loose from the waist up when she got to her feet.

When we began, he found it difficult to believe that so many answers were available in the conscious mind, and was astonished as he proceeded to discover that this was the case. [...]

[...] The writing self was finding itself more and more hampered, unable to use excellent material because of its limited beliefs. It focused so defensively on its own material that it was hampering its flow of creativity, while the “unacceptable” aspects of Ruburt merrily went on creating other books, not even including my own.

His core belief in himself as a writer, he saw, was really highly constrictive. [...] He realized that the writing and psychic aspects each did want to write, and this was the bridge belief.

Also her strong feeling that you should borrow money and get an apartment or flat or whatever you call it, was the best advice you could have been given. She was vehement and in tears over this on one occasion. [...] Looking back, can you not agree with me that it was a much more practical solution than the one you ultimately chose?

[...] Malba of the midplane was your apt description. Actually Malba herself was a not-too-intelligent woman who died in 1946 in South Dakota, as she said.

Your dog’s illness was incipient. [...] It was beyond your control.

[...] It was impossible, Joseph, for your parents to even be decent when you returned from Florida for the same reason that you and Ruburt were unable to help your Mischa in his time of need. You were using all available energies to fight nervous projections, and therefore could not help maintain what was real.

(When I was a few car lengths from the light, the dream suddenly popped into my mind. [...] The effect was so startling that I at once began to wonder whether it was possible to act out dream suggestions in waking life. My self-questioning was particularly intriguing because I could have chosen from a half-dozen routes to work; yet I had picked a course that enabled me to act out the dream of the night before, while not being consciously aware of the dream.)

(It was a very hot and humid evening and we held the session in our large front room, where we have a cooler. Because our windows were open traffic noise was rather bothersome to me. [...] Her voice was quiet—too quiet as it developed. [...]

[...] Jane was dissociated as usual for a first break. [...] The noise had bothered me, but Jane said that as she was speaking she was aware of no distractions.

[...] He was not confident enough of his own abilities, and the dream success was most beneficial from this viewpoint.

He was bound and determined to explore the nature of reality. He wanted to protect himself against self-delusion, of going too fast too soon, until he had enough knowledge to know what he was doing. He trusted most of my material, but he could not entirely trust me because I was part of the trip.

[...] There was no one he could go to for instruction. I could have helped him further, but I was part of the picture.

The symptoms then have operated as controls, a framework in which spontaneity was allowed—but allowed only so far. [...]

[...] No one was following in your footsteps. [...]

[...] It was very brief but very clear. [...] I had absolutely no reaction to the news at all — and at once remembered my total lack of reaction when our lawyer had told me that the insurance business was settled. I was evidently so numb from repeated doses of fear and concern and negativity and Jane’s worsening situation daily, that I couldn’t react. [...] I was afraid to hope, perhaps.

[...] Her favorite soap opera was on.

[...] I had her help me fill out the menu, for I’d decided it was useless for me to continue putting items on it that she never touched.

(Jane could still hurry things up when she wanted to — hence the early session because I was leaving later. [...]

(I was really pleased. [...] I replied that all I knew was that she couldn’t move like that before taking the vitamins, the peanut oil massages, and the cod liver oil, etc., but I added that I was more than happy to credit sessions, beliefs, and/or anything else that gave us results. [...]

[...] This is far better than she could do even a couple of weeks ago, although I think it was back then that she first showed me a slight increase in knee motion. [...]

(She was also able to alternately move her legs rapidly back and forth a good distance, instead of in unison all the time. [...]

[...] Nor was she sore today. [...]

Now: you are working very well together, and your suggestion about the use of the chair (to get around the house) was the result of Framework 2 creativity. [...] He was afraid of wheelchair connotations, but he triumphed over that negative idea. Your suggestion was important for several reasons. It was practical, and could be done at once. Its most important benefit, however, was that it freed Ruburt from mentally seeing himself in only one corner of one room, and immediately aroused his normal leanings toward love of whatever home you share.

[...] I said that I understood his answer to my question all right, but yet that I felt there were still things there to be discussed; that in individual cases, for instance, the subconscious could go too far when there was no need to, and that in such cases it seemed to ignore the wishes and desires of the conscious personality involved. [...] But primarily, my original question had to do with Jane’s own case, and at this time that was the one we were still interested in gaining insight into.)

[...] His mother was authoritative to a degree. His father was lax. [...]

One was at a time when Ruburt began Rich Bed and the first draft of Adventures. He was examining beliefs, expressing aggressions naturally, and freeing his spontaneity. [...]

For example, Jane began Politics by describing how impatient she was, how “disconnected” she felt, because she hadn’t been inspired since finishing Adventures two months previously. Indeed, she was very upset over this, and quite serious in her feeling, as she later wrote in her new book, of being abandoned by her inner self. In Volume 2, now, the reader can note the many events Jane was actually involved in before she began Politics (on October 23), and see just how objective her perception of her activities was — or see, really, the demanding standards of creativity against which she constantly judges herself

[...] I thought it interesting that as I was completing work for Jane’s first book on aspect psychology, she was starting Psychic Politics, the second one in the series. [...]

[...] For it was and wasn’t a Seth session, and it was and wasn’t book dictation, as the following notes will show.

[...] She was exploring the “world view” of a fly. This adventure was certainly a preparation for developments in the 717th session.

[...] Now I am not sure if the woman’s name was Lillian, but a Lillian was somehow connected with the event. The episode was not a traumatic one. It was simply an emotional one, a trivial incident, however, that you picked up telepathically. [...]

The event was subconsciously recognized by you and had to do, I believe, with a woman with whom you worked with, whom you are at least partially involved in that you meet her now and then. [...] I do not know if she is there now, but she was at that time and you met her in the hallway. It was a telepathic connection on your part that subconsciously simply came to the forefront of your mind with the date. [...]

[...] The people within the environment appeared happy because they did not think and everything was done for them and life was, indeed, like an institution and they could not leave. [...]

(To Valerie.) This one was here last night and I was here and I spoke to you because I am such a friendly fellow and you do not remember. [...]
