Ruburt became frightened in the past, and long before our sessions. [...] He began in our work to become more aware of these feelings, and extremely frightened at expressing any of them, for many of the reasons given by me in the past.

I have told you in the past to make room in your daily or weekly or monthly lives for variety of a quite normal kind. [...]

[...] Now in the past Ruburt would brood over the feelings, leading him into a physical apathy. [...]

[...] The basis, now, (underlined) of Ruburt’s situation is not largely (underlined) from the past.

[...] Then to my surprise I saw my father ride past me, past the corner, on a bicycle. [...] His face was very smooth-looking and pink-cheeked, looking very healthy, and he seemed to pedal past me quite easily, as a youth would do.

The tub was next interpreted as a washing machine in a secondary level that was in itself a symbol leading to the next interpretation, belonging to a past life, that of an old tub that leaked. In his dream the washing machine leaked, leading him into a third level, where the tub was a symbol for the old ship that leaked when you, Joseph, were a passenger on your way to Boston in a past life.

[...] It is therefore able to view the self as a whole, with its past and present life. [...]

[...] The past administrator of the gallery was known to you in that life, and was a passenger on the same ship. [...]

[...] and they are great preventive measures, for precisely the sort of difficulties you have both in the past been heir to. [...]

Now Ruburt took this out physically, and blocked emotions, not from the distant past but a current life-habit, now shows these blocked emotions. [...]

[...] Often you are so involved with feelings you had in the past that you do not know what you are feeling in the present. [...]

Yet I can’t remember offhand what happened in my normal daily life during those past days, either. [...] Then, this today will also be part of the past. [...]

[...] They seem to contain an energy that comes alive in Seth’s words, so that they belong to the future as well as to the past. [...]

[...] The minds of the past and future are open to us, or at least their contents are, not in a parasitic relationship but in a lively give-and-take, in which knowledge from each time period enriches every other historical era. [...]

This should lead you to understand why physical time is basically meaningless to the subconscious, and why the inner self has at its command a knowledge of past lives and past endeavors; for the inner self, dear friends, these lives are not in the past, nor is the life of the ego necessarily present to the whole self.

[...] For while there is no real past or present or future within the spacious present, there is indeed an infinity of inward and outward; and again, of actions within actions, and there is no end to these actions for they are self-generating. [...]

For to the whole self all personalities that compose it exist simultaneously, and personalities that would appear to you as future personalities are experienced by the whole self in the same dimension as it experiences personalities that you would call past personalities. [...]

I would like here to discuss a fact about which we have spoken briefly in the past; that is, that the inner world cannot be examined with the outer senses, that indeed the main purpose of the outer senses is the interpretation of the outer or camouflage existence.

A familiarity must be gained by an individual with the general nature of his own dreams first, as Ruburt now has some knowledge or intuition that enables him to distinguish between dreams that originate in areas having to do with past lives, and those which originate in other areas, though he is not yet able to further differentiate.

The basic and originating dream sequence occurred in that area of the subconscious having to do with past lives, and of course expanded into other areas. [...]

[...] In the dream the lad’s present mother is seen to comfort you, this being a way to relieve the past uneasiness that at a certain subconscious area still lingers. [...]

Since past, present, and future do not exist, this is a level of crystal clear communication of consciousness. [...]

At no point can we actually say that one construction vanishes and another takes its place, but artificially we adopt certain points as past, present and future, for convenience. At some point, we agree that the physical construction ceases to be one thing and becomes another, but, actually, it still contains elements of the “past” construction and is already becoming the “next” one.

The past is the memory of ideas that were but are no longer physical constructions.

Memory is the ghost image of “past” idea constructions.

(For the past few days I’ve done little “creative” work, beyond working on my watercolor portrait of Mrs. Johnson, the subject of my dream of last November, for an hour or two in the mornings; then in the afternoons I’ve typed these sessions and written the required notes for the record. [...] It’s something I’ve largely neglected in past periods of discomfort. [...]

The excursions with form number one will be of your own system, and largely connected to the earth, although past, present and future may be involved. [...]

You are also somewhat idealizing the past, however, so you did not simply get the information “straight on,” but you received it in such a fashion that it made its own psychological points also, and was furthermore wound into other action not only within that dream, but in a series of dreams.

[...] I read it over just before tonight’s session began, and was able to reaffirm my opinion that it’s still one of the best; at the same time it aroused questions, for it deals with causes in the past. According to Seth’s suggested use of the point of power, and his late deleted material, one isn’t supposed to dwell on the past, but go forward from the present—two major blocks of material, I told Jane this evening, that at first glance seem to contradict each other. [...]

(At this writing at least I plan to spend evenings typing new session material, and in the time left over to restudy the past material in the hopes of putting it all together with and/or without Seth’s help. [...]

[...] When the session began I half expected Seth to tell us to stay away from old deleted sessions, since as mentioned delving into the past can cause too intense a focus there, and reinforce problems, whatever they may be. [...]

It seems to you that any personality worth its salt must have a series of memories, of events that existed in the past and progressed to a present and a future. [...]

In your terms then, a future event would exist before a past event. [...]

[...] The time concept leads then to a limited idea, for you cannot conceive of an identity without memory of the past in your (underlined) terms.
