(Jane and I decided to record tonight’s session, and to make it a practice to do so more often in the future. Accordingly, Jane set up the recorder after supper, so that she had but to flip a switch to start it going at the beginning of the session.

[...] I have mentioned that we will have a party session in your new house, and I suggest that Philip be invited, for what will be a truly hilarious session.

Nevertheless, if these sessions were coming through you, Joseph, rather than through Ruburt vocally, then Philip’s wife would not be so concerned. This is not a conscious reaction on her part, although she does react consciously against the woman who has been recording the sessions.

(I told Jane at suppertime tonight that she was having a session this evening. [...] There had been a number of developments in the past few days, and the session that follows outlines some of those as they apply to Jane’s condition, so there’s little need to repeat them here.

(Jane asked me not to read any of my original notes to her before the session, since she was trying to get herself in a quiet mood so that she could have a good session.)

The pendulum sessions have also served to bring issues out into the open. I watched you both with those sessions, and tried gently to monitor how you handled them. [...]

(Concerning Jane making sale of her writing soon, the last statement of the session above now makes four times that this bit of information has come to us, either through sessions or Jane’s psychological time. [...] In writing out the last line of the session from Jane’s dictation, I took it for granted the information referred to one sale. Jane then told me, as soon as the session ended, that it referred to two sales; one now accomplished, and other future sales. [...]

(Naturally, after Jane’s experience with psychological time earlier in the day, we wondered whether there would be a session at all tonight. [...] We made plans to hold the session as usual, provided Seth himself did not eliminate it or Jane had a change of heart. Jane had no idea of what material the session might cover, as far as foreknowledge went.

(Jane and I have talked to our landlord, Jimmy Spaziani, concerning the data given by Seth in the 100th session, concerning the missing cover to the thermostat in our apartment house. [...]

[...] “I can’t remember the session now, but I think I covered everything I got from him yesterday and today,” Jane said. [...]

(It’s Friday evening as I finish typing this session. Yesterday I felt better—with the session half typed—than I have for some time. [...] Today I felt almost as good, but reminded of the session content, which always helped. [...]

(This is the first session we’ve had since March 6. I think Jane held it only because I haven’t been feeling well for several weeks. She’s only now really recovering from the cold she picked up from RW early last month; and somehow she also got off the track of the sessions.

[...] I’m so glad I’m back on the sessions,” Jane said. [...] I told her the session was excellent indeed. [...]

[...] “I’m back to the sessions. I was nervous before this one, and I’ll ready the last book session before next Monday....”

(Seth began discussing the inner senses in the 20th session; by the 50th session he had gone into some detail on nine of them, with more to come. By the 59th session he had also included eleven basic laws of the inner universe, plus three properties of physical material.

[...] In the 197th session, Seth had suggested I give Jane these tests unannounced during the middle of the session. I had forgotten to do so, and when I realized this at last break had assumed it would be better to wait until next session.

(Jane has been working hard these days, and before the session tonight she remarked that her eyes were tired. The session was held in our quiet back room. [...]

(Seth began discussing the inner ego along with the inner senses, so material on it is woven through the sessions. A few recent sessions dealing with the inner ego are: 94, 151, 162, 173. [...]

(In mentioning my “sportsman self,” Seth referred to information he’d given about three of my probable selves in a private session on January 30, 1974 — just a few days before starting “Unknown” Reality. The session contains many personal insights that I now recognize as being quite true. [...] See Note I for Session 679.

(Here’s Seth to me in that January session:) You, for example, could have excelled at certain sports, where Ruburt had no such inclinations. [...]

Your father’s creativity, as mentioned [in earlier, unpublished sessions] had its side of secrecy, privacy and aloneness … you identified creatively with his private nature. [...]

(Jane had reread my list of questions for Seth, based on this last group of sessions, and referred to often. After supper we’d talked about questions 2 and 13, the same ones we’d asked that Seth discuss in another recent private session; he hadn’t done so yet, though. And, of course, his material throughout these sessions can’t but help touch upon various facets pertaining to the questions. [...]

(Jane said she’d first called me for the session at 8:20, but I had been working in the studio closet and hadn’t heard her. [...] She added that she was having the session because she supposed she ought to.

[...] He has not “given up” the book sessions, by the way, but suspended them for these sessions, to give you more time, but they are merely in abeyance.

The feelings were responsible for the blocking mentioned in our last session, and represent the plucking of the sorest thorn from his flesh, symbolically. [...]

(We have had two short “sessions,” during which Jane dictated passages for the intro to Dreams while I wrote down her words. [...] I have yet to type that material, but will start it after finishing this session.

[...] I’d spent some little time trying to talk her into a short session to begin with, and she’d finally agreed to try for one. [...] I could see that we’d get no session tonight. [...]

(The contradictory thing was, as I’d told her the other day, that I didn’t think we were going to get anywhere in solving our dilemmas until we tapped into the session routine again. [...] meaning that she’d have a session after all. [...]

(Seth’s reference, above, to Jane’s fear of going too fast is a reference to an excerpt from the deleted session for January 28, 1981. [...] It seems to me that it very neatly sums up the core of Jane’s difficulties—that one, along with a longer excerpt from the deleted session for January 26, 1981 just previous. [...]

[...] Jane made a few more motions before the session. I was surprised when she suggested the session, since for some reason I’d thought she wasn’t going to have one. [...]

(Just before the session, we saw a newscast of a congressional committee in Washington, with some well-known scientists testifying as to the probable aftereffects of nuclear war—how the instigator would also eventually destroy itself even if the attacked never fired a retaliatory strike at all. [...] finished typing the last half of Monday’s session just before the session tonight. [...] I also told her I want to quote portions of Monday’s session in Seth’s current book, Dreams.

(“Seth, of course, not only dictates his magical material — the session — but must keep the whole session in mind while doing so, so that each sentence as he delivers it makes sense compared to its predecessors, and those to follow. [...] Seth has no script to go by, nor can he refer during the session to my own notes to check up on what he’s already said.

(This is certainly magical — Jane’s performance as Seth, in the sessions. This note, which I wrote a couple of days later, was inspired by Seth’s material in this session:

I told Ruburt that he wasn’t pregnant, so now I expect that our sessions will be a little smoother again now that he is relieved of the big question. [...] The sessions themselves have helped Ruburt develop discipline.

(While Jane was reading over the 42nd session this morning after breakfast, the word disentanglement came to her mind. [...]

6. Jane covers our York Beach “dancing episode” in Chapter 2 of The Seth Material, and also quotes information Seth gave us on it in later sessions. [...] In the 9th session for December 18, 1963, Seth explained what we had been up to, and called our creations “fragments of our selves, thrown-off materializations of your own negative and aggressive feelings.” (Naturally, the more Seth told us about the human ability to generate such forms, the more questions we had!) In that 9th session Seth also used his term, “probable self,” for the first time.

(In the last session, Seth began discussing separate photographs of Jane and me [taken at the ages of 12 and 2, respectively] in connection with his ideas about probable selves. [...]
