Bill Macdonnel asked Jane and me to attend a seance on the deserted third floor of the building in downtown Elmira, where Bill has his studio. Working on the second floor, Bill had several times heard footsteps on the floor above; but checking the deserted floor, unused for many years, had found nothing except doors mysteriously unlocked.

(We tried several locations without success, finally standing at a table close to the death scene, a doorway. Seth then came through, and in no uncertain terms told us to mind our own business. We were told, in a strong and echoing Seth voice, to let the poor man rest in peace; he would be “here” for a while longer yet, then leave. In the meantime we had no business trying to contact him. He did not want to be reached, but to rest and be left alone.
(Seth spoke for less than a minute, but Jane said later that she was far-out. When she came out of trance she nearly fell in the darkness, feeling a momentary disorientation because of the depth of the trance.)
