I would even advise a double reading of the above sentence for it is a keystone and a vital one. Rising to challenges is a basis for existence in every aspect of existence. Upon the degree to which this is done rests the power and coherence of everything that is.
You as a physical being are also dependent upon many forces that you do not understand, so there is no contradiction in saying that the cells are individual and independent, and yet dependent upon stronger organization. There is no coercion put upon the cells, because each cell is what it is because of its innate ability and strength. Nor is there any coercion as far as a personality is concerned, which is a part of an entity. [...]

This is the case, but not the case. The choices are small to your way, but choice is not impossible. Actually there is choice, but the manipulation of camouflage is not developed along your lines. This does not mean that there is no consciousness in such species, nor does it mean there is no self-consciousness. There is, to a limited degree.
