[...] “The Seth Material will be published, and you’ll help the world — it’s too much! [...] And Malba didn’t sound terribly bright; at least Seth is intelligent and knows what he’s talking about. [...] This way I’m trying to figure out if Seth is independent or not … [and] worrying about a Malba, too.”
[...] For one thing, I distrusted the “prediction” that the Seth Material would be published.
[...] Rob told me later that he was squirming some, as I paced back and forth, delivering this material as Seth.
Following Seth’s suggestions, Rob began doing a few simple yoga exercises, and the night before the eighteenth session he used self-hypnosis to relax his muscles. [...] Seth began to comment on this in the beginning of the next session. [...]
[...] Seth had given us on the condition of Miss Callahan. [...] To me this implied that Miss Callahan was in better condition, but Jane said she felt otherwise, that Seth’s material here was not distorted.
[...] She said she thought Seth kept her going until he had gotten all of the above material through. [...]
[...] She felt Seth was ready to talk about the American Society for Psychic Research; but she was so afraid of making a mistake that she couldn’t let the material come through yet.
There is only a relatively small layer of personal material, and therefore egotistical and distortive material, at the upper reaches of the subconscious. [...] For the record, you understand that I am referring to egotistical material as that portion that is concerned with the outer camouflage-oriented personality, and that the stronger inner ego actually represents the power and ability behind the outer ego.
[...] During class I read aloud Seth’s material from the 738th session on the Grunaargh family of consciousness,1 which Sue had tuned in to during the 598th session for November 24, 1971. [...]
“When I first mentioned the family name, Grunaargh (as Seth spelled it out for us in that session over three years ago), I knew that its members had something to do with printing, or the promulgation of printed material. [...]
“When Seth listed the families of consciousness last January,3 but didn’t include the Grunaargh, Rob asked him about it in the 738th session. In Jane’s final class, Rob read Seth’s explanation having to do with family ‘mergings.’ Right away, right there in class, I knew what was behind the feeling I’d had about this family: Members of the Grunaargh, and I personally, were involved in the invention of movable type. [...]
[...] Actually, she told us, the material available to her from that time “could go on” indefinitely. [...]
[...] See the 503rd session for September 24 for Seth’s comments re Jane’s relief at Prentice-Hall’s approval, through Tam Mossman, of Jane’s book on the Seth material. [...]
(Jane has been so busy finishing up the manuscript of her book on the Seth material, for Prentice-Hall, that we haven’t had a session since September 29.
(“What do you think of the book?” Jane sent the first 13 chapters of The Seth Material to the publisher Monday, October 13.)
(Before the session tonight I said I was curious about Seth’s interpretation of my dream of October 9. This will be given in the appropriate place in the text. Jane said that Seth was going to talk about the electromagnetic units discussed in the last session—she could “feel him buzzing around.”)
10. For some Seth material on suicide, see the first delivery for the 546th session, in Chapter 11 of Seth Speaks. In the 642nd session for Chapter 11 of Personal Reality, Seth mentioned that suicide can be “the result of passivity and distorted aggression, and of natural pathways of communication not used or understood.”
12. A note added later: I’m sorry to write that Seth didn’t discuss historical probabilities in the 736th session, or national counterparts either. I forgot to remind Jane of those topics before that session, just as I forgot to ask Seth about them while he was speaking. Several more sessions were held before I discovered the lapse, which occurred partly because I hadn’t typed the 735th session yet, and neglected to refer to my handwritten notes, and partly because in the meantime Seth had returned to his material on the families of consciousness. [...]
(Occasionally Seth will make this kind of correction in his material.)
5. In very gentle ways, Jane did eventually use some of Seth’s impressions relative to both people — but cast in her own vernacular — for Chapter 18 of Politics. In that chapter she also began presenting, again from her viewpoint, material on our house-hunting activities; she plans to continue doing so in subsequent chapters.
[...] Jane and I have been trying to think of a good title for her book dealing with Seth and the material, since she has begun work on it. [...]
[...] The plans are simple; at session times next week Bill and Peggy will attempt to concentrate on Jane, Seth and me, with a view to seeing what Seth can pick up.
(It will be recalled that Seth himself [or Jane?] initiated the idea of asking me if I had an envelope test at each session. [...] In that session however Seth also said it would be better if Jane did not know whether I planned a test before any particular session.
(In the 180th session however, Seth’s comments led into the second envelope test, and in the 183rd session Seth queried me outright as to whether I had a third test for him. [...]
(Seth is correct, and after he mentioned the twine connection Jane and I remembered it. This took place not on January 25, however, but on February 10, when the manuscript on the Seth material and the poetry book were mailed together. But Jane wrote letter #4, concerning the Seth material, on January 25. [...]
[...] It contained the manuscript for the book on the Seth material, plus that of the poetry book. [...] The connection here with the envelope data is the January 25 postmark on the experimental object; Jane discusses the book on the Seth material in letter #4, written on January 25. [...]
[...] In this letter Jane discussed the 200 pages she has finished on her first book on the Seth material itself. [...]
[...] In the 212th session for November 29,1965 Seth discussed various measurements that could be taken from Jane just before, during, and after sessions by a doctor. Father Martin was a doctor before entering the religious life; he knows of the sessions but has not witnessed any or read the material. [...]
[...] In a way, and in those terms, this also applies in Jane’s case when she contacts Seth, even on the “psychological bridge” those two have constructed between them: When Seth tells us that his last physical life was in Denmark in the 1600s, then Jane and I represent future physical selves of his. I put it this way because Seth himself has commented that the three of us are “offshoots of the same entity.” [...] He is nevertheless an extension and materialization of the Seth that I was at one time.”
Early in this essay (which I began on May 7, 1982), I mentioned the series of sessions Seth gave in 1980 on his magical approach to reality, and the different approaches Jane and I took toward doing books on the subject. We were becoming so harried by her worsening physical symptoms when that material started to come through that she gave up working on Dreams and concentrated on those private sessions instead. [...] Then when Seth and Jane both came through with material on her sinful self (see Essay No. [...] Jane didn’t return to work on Dreams until July 1981, when the two blocks of sinful-self material had run their courses. [...]
Among the subjects not discussed so far are Seth’s (and our own) ideas on reincarnation, counterparts, probable realities, and Frameworks 1 and 2. Jane briefly referred to Seth’s “magical approach” material in her dictation last month (see her own session of April 16, 1982, in Essay No. [...] So as counterpoint to her writings on the sinful self, I’ll be presenting two excerpts to hint at what Seth does mean by his magical approach.
Aside from any books that he may produce himself (and on whatever subjects), I’ve already made plans to put together a short volume featuring Seth’s discussions on the magical approach to reality. A year earlier Jane had begun a much more ambitious project involving this material, as she mentioned on April 16, but she laid it aside for reasons already covered. My version will mainly feature the dozen or so sessions Seth gave in August—September 1980, and the poetry Jane was inspired to write because of them. She may also contribute an introduction to the book, showing how Seth’s and her own sinful-self information are related to the magical approach.
[...] There was something new here, though, I thought, when one postulated that Seth as we knew him was acceptable because of the symptoms. [...] Strange, I thought, if it turned out that personal work would be one of the most creative of all the uses to which the Seth material could be put, rather than grandiose pronouncements coming down from on high, dispensed by one who was in a position of superiority.
(Jane said she thought Seth might discuss our discussion, as well as the three other questions I’d mentioned about her feet, and so forth. I also had questions about some of my recent dreams, including the one of July 7 that Seth had promised to comment upon, but I had little hope that he’d get into that material tonight. [...]
[...] I was encouraged that Seth too found something to talk about in my insight of just before the session. Later, I supposed that Jane’s recovery—even if only to a degree—could also be taken as a sign of the legitimacy of the Seth material, since she’d be using it to see her way clear to bring about that recovery. [...]
(“So you’re in trouble,” I said, “because that situation makes the Seth material legitimate. [...]
(Another question asked before the session: Seth’s own definition of electrical reality, in connection with the book on the Seth material Jane is now writing.)
The material I am giving you now is an offshoot from the material on time that you requested, that will shortly return to that subject, and the electrical-reality material will follow in there naturally.
[...] Shortly before nine she reported glimmerings from Seth.
(Her pace as Seth was slower than Monday’s, but still a good one. [...]
[...] Seth’s “Framework 2” would be this magical area, of course, I thought. Yet except for the beginning of that (part) of Seth’s material, Framework 24 never really got through to me emotionally. [...]
3. See Appendix A for Jane’s material on how some of her own thoughts “relate in one way or another to the thoughts of others.” Included also are excerpts from Seth’s material on a different prediction experience of Jane’s.
As Seth I’ve produced five previous books: Seth Speaks; The Nature of Personal Reality; The “Unknown” Reality, Volumes I and II; The Nature of the Psyche; and The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events, and Seth is halfway through a sixth book: Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment. [...] Seth doesn’t answer mail though, or do any typing, and so as a result of those trance hours Rob and I spend a good deal of our conscious energy dealing one way or another with the effects of that trance life.
1. Jane Roberts writes in The God of Jane: “Since late 1963, I’ve clocked approximately 4,000 hours of trancetime, during which the Seth sessions have been held twice weekly. [...] I’m not unconscious but conscious in a different way, at another level … This state of perception has nothing to do with classical pathological dissociation; and its products — Seth’s five books — display a highly-developed intellect at work and give evidence of a special kind of creativity. In those trance hours I ‘turn into someone else.’ At least I am not myself to myself; I become Seth, or a part of what Seth is. [...]
(Jane said that she felt the material was a burden at this point. [...] She hadn’t really thought Seth would say that her dream and psychological time data were correct; she didn’t think, moreover, that Seth would ever come out with such material, no matter whose death was involved.
[...] If it is found it will be filed with other data pertinent to the Seth material.
[...] John could offer us no confirmation on Seth’s data concerning John’s home office in Chicago. [...] John recalls no one fitting the rather general description given by Seth.
(Seth also stated at that time that John will have to take strong measures if he wants to achieve certain goals. [...]
On Friday, October 9, 1970, I received a letter from a reader, Peg Boyles, about my book The Seth Material. With it she included an excerpt from Living Time by Maurice Nicoll, and another from a manuscript by Alice Bailey. [...] I did not even look at the Bailey material. The Nicoll pages intrigued me, and I thought of asking Seth about some of Nicoll’s ideas.
[...] Somehow, I begin a discussion of the Seth Material with them and go into a talk on physical reality and such, and discover that a few years ago, they had received some strange messages through Jane from ‘someone claiming to be a dead spirit.’ ‘But it was ridiculous,’ Jane says, ‘so we dropped it.’
[...] The episode is included in The Seth Material, but it was one of the strangest events of our lives.
Now, this is not dictation [on Seth’s own book], but it is some material that Ruburt can use in his dream book. [...]
2. At about the time Seth was producing his material on patterns for “Unknown” Reality, Jane was dealing with the same concept from her own much more personal viewpoint. [...]
3. See Seth’s material on his units of consciousness, or CU’s, in sessions 682–83 for Volume 1 of “Unknown” Reality. In the 682nd session after 9:47, for example, he discussed relationships between CU’s and probable realities.
6. Much of Seth’s material in this session (and in this paragraph), along with his obviously intense feelings about what he was saying, reminded me of a group of sessions he gave well over a decade ago on the three creative dilemmas of All That Is. [...]
Those sessions, 426–28, were held in August 1964, and Jane presented excerpts from them in Chapter 18 of The Seth Material.
(The following material is from the 898th session. Before the session I’d mentioned to Jane that I’d like something from Seth about my dream of early this morning. [...]
[...] Jane didn’t remember the dream material. [...] Later I thought that I should have asked Seth what kind of interpretation of the dream a conventional psychologist would have given. [...]
[...] Next I began to remind myself of Seth’s material in the last three private sessions—to live in the present and stop projecting into the future, that my body didn’t deserve to be treated that way, and didn’t understand such musings. [...]
[...] I’d wanted Seth to say something more specific about my being the same age [as a woman] as my father in the dream.)
(Seth began explaining his source and the source of this material in the very early sessions. [...] By the 63rd session he was explaining his state as energy not materialized into mass; this after telling us in the 54th session that Jane, Seth and I had been part of the same entity once; he could not tell us this earlier, he said, because Jane and I would have immediately jumped to the conclusion that he was part of Jane’s subconscious mind.
(Seth’s statements are presented in full from each session, with the comments from Peggy and Bill just below each statement in italic type. The Gallaghers agreed on each answer, concerning the Puerto Rico material. [...] We begin with Seth’s material on them from the 199th session for October 18,1965, at 9 PM.)
(As in the Puerto Rico experiments, Seth’s material is presented line by line, in regular type, with Peggy’s answers below. [...] Begin with Seth’s material from the 214th session for December 6,1965.)
(The Gallaghers gave their written answers to this material just as they had to Seth’s material. [...]
3. One of the most unique out-of-body experiences, or projections, I’ve had was much like that which Seth describes here. It took place in April 1971, and I wrote about it in Chapter 20 of Seth Speaks. See the notes for the 583rd session. My consciousness didn’t travel more than 10 feet from my body that time, but the little journey, so vivid and pleasant, did much to reinforce the enlarged view of reality that I’d gradually begun to adopt after Jane started delivering the Seth material late in 1963. [...]
[...] Seth began describing the inner senses early in 1964. [...] Jane devoted Chapter 19 of The Seth Material to the inner senses.
A note: Just as he periodically reminds us of his material-to-come on physical aging and out-of-body states (see Note 4, above), Seth mentions that there are more inner senses he’ll tell us about someday — then adds that many of them are so far removed from reality as we understand it that our comprehension will be intellectual at best; in such cases we won’t be able to identify with them emotionally. And then other groups of inner senses, Seth continues, are truly “beyond verbalization.”
2. For material on CU and EE units in Volume 1, see sessions 682 (with notes 3 and 4), 683–84, and 688. The last two sessions also contain some of Seth’s comments on cellular consciousness.
(Seth caught me. [...] It was — very much so: In material covering several pages, he discussed my mother and her recent experiences with probabilities in her advanced old age. The complicated family situation involving Mother Butts isn’t gone into here, but Jane and I decided to include the more generalized parts of Seth’s information; we think it will help others in their relationships with old people.
[...] See Chapter Fourteen for some of Seth’s material on probabilities.)
[...] Jane said she’d used the phrase given by Seth at 9:04, “Facts are only accepted fiction….” just this afternoon in her own theoretical work, Aspect Psychology; she had also written about ideas very much like those Seth presented at 9:15.
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
[...] At the time Seth said it was a wise move, and that from that point on Jane would do well with her writing. [...] Seth also dealt rather extensively with the conflict between Jane and the director of the Arnot in the following sessions: 74, 75, 77, 79, 82, 84 and 85. All of Seth’s material on the situation has worked out. [...]
(Seth began discussing the inner senses in the 20th session; by the 50th session he had gone into some detail on nine of them, with more to come. By the 59th session he had also included eleven basic laws of the inner universe, plus three properties of physical material.
(Seth began discussing the inner ego along with the inner senses, so material on it is woven through the sessions. [...]
[...] Jane learned little about their trip other than that the Gallaghers took many notes to use in checking against Seth’s notes; and that Bill found himself involved in a “strange experience” with a piano player and what he thought was telepathy. [...]
3. Nor was I quick enough to ask Seth if the material Jane delivered for him tonight constituted any kind of contradiction with that of the 689th session; for in that session he discussed man-animal and animal-man as existing within the Tertiary Period. Presumably these “mutated forms” had implied the beginnings of man, in ordinary terms, yet now Seth spoke of cave-dwelling humans as coexistent with large birds at an earlier time. [...] Too involved to determine, these questions, on too little material.
[...] At 9:30 Jane said she was starting to get “bleed-throughs” about Seth’s material for tonight.)
(I read her the material Seth had given so far this evening; at 10:30 she resumed the session as though there hadn’t been any interruption at all:)
[...] And since we decided that we were up to it, Seth returned in a quarter of an hour with better than two pages of material for Jane and me. [...]
