I am not recommending that you abandon the procedure when it obviously works for so many — yet you should understand why it brings about the desired results.

Amazingly, another English naturalist, Alfred Wallace (1823–1913), independently developed a similar theory, and the two men had their work presented to science in the same paper in 1858. [...]

MY PRESENT ENVIRONMENT,
WORK, AND ACTIVITIES

My work in this environment provides far more challenge than any of you know, and it also necessitates the manipulation of creative materials that are nearly beyond your present comprehension. [...]

These elements would then be put together in such a way that they would give the impetus and the psychic challenge, the need to know, that could result in work like ours.

(It is of interest here to note that a current Biblical reference work, in dealing with the very early history of Israel, has much to say about the “oral traditions” which preceded — and thus helped shape — the written word by many centuries. [...] Recent work has shown that the early gathering and writing of traditions dates from about the twelfth century B.C. This in turn led to the biblical books. [...]

Offhand, the work involved could take five years, for there were several versions, and a group of leaders, each going in different directions, who taught their people. [...]

At different levels, consciousness works with different kinds of symbols. [...] Working in one direction the soul, using its consciousness, expresses inner reality through as many symbols as possible, through living, changing symbolism. [...]

[...] Working in the opposite direction, so to speak, the soul divests itself of all symbols, all representations, and using its consciousness in a different way learns to probe its own direct experience. [...]
