(Long pause.) The individuals concerned pretend to themselves that they have no memory of the other personalities’ existences or activities. These personalities, however, store up their energy so that one personality often exhibits explosive behavior, or makes certain decisions that seem (underlined) to go against the wishes of the main entity. [...] In fact, the main personality is able to express many different kinds of probable action, but the entire personality is prevented from acting with its full energy or power. [...]

People with so-called secondary personalities also fear their own energy. They divide it up so that it seems to belong (long pause) to different personalities, and is therefore effectively divided. [...] The people involved are quite aware of their activity at all times, but they behave in a fashion that is not continual — that is, the main personality does not seem to behave in a continual manner, but is broken up, or again, seemingly divided. This psychological ploy neatly prevents the so-called main personality from using all of its energy at any one time.

Actually, the dominant personality, in your terms, can be compared to the dominant entity. [...] As the personality on your plane actually changes, expands and grows to its potentialities, as it presents at various times varied images to the world (such as — if you’ll forgive me for using cliches — a smiling face, a sorrowful face), but is still basically the same personality, so on another level does the entity present at various times a varied appearance and speak in a different voice. As the smiling and sorrowful faces also express and expand the personality, so, too, do the various reincarnated personalities express and expand the entity as a whole.

Schizophrenia is caused by a personality fragment that is broken off, so to speak, from the primary acting personality, operating often in direct opposition to it, but in any case, operating as a secondary personality.

[...] But these dream images work for the entity as a whole and serve as a means for the various personalities to communicate; that is, in many cases, the previous personalities communicate with the present one. This is a means of acquainting the present personality with its ‘past’ and also of reminding it of its goals, without disturbing the blatant awake ego.

[...] Instead, the dissociated part of the personality dons another personality and battles with the dominant one for control. [...]

[...] The most important point is to arouse such a person’s beliefs in his or her strength and power. In many instances these persons symbolically shrug their shoulders, saying. [...]

So do not be surprised, for you may see a person, an animal, an insect, or a landscape — but trust whatever image you do receive. If it seems to be that of a person, or angel, or animal, then ask it to speak to you, and to tell you how best to rid yourself of your disease or problem.

Again, we cannot generalize overmuch, but many persons know quite well that they are not sure whether they want to live or die. [...]

Almost everyone is familiar with something else, however, and that is the psychological experience which may have no observable physical effect, and yet can change a personality to a large degree. Now the change in the personality may have secondary physical effects. The personality may act in certain ways in the physical world as a result of a psychological experience. [...] Any such effects are made after the experience by the personality involved.

[...] The psychological experience will be intensely diversified, personal, unpredictable as far as each family member is concerned. [...] It is too vivid to ignore, and oftentimes the personality is almost divorced from action because of this experience that is psychological, that cannot be observed with instruments, or even by the person involved.

The present personality cannot travel to the complete entity, again because of these very real laws; that is, while caught in or under the influence of the field of your plane, the personality cannot travel to the entity. The personality can and should be aware of the whole self of which it is a part, and that part of the whole self which the ego ignores, is the one part which can enter into the field influence of the entity, though it cannot travel to the entity itself.

[...] Once the personality realizes that even in life on your plane he is not always bound by physical data, and that even in physical life the most real portion of him is independent of physical matter, and in a personal way, then he will not fear death as a personal ending.

[...] These outer senses are developed to cope with these particular camouflage patterns which the personality will meet in its various environments. The inner senses always operate regardless of the particular environment in which the personality is presently involved. The inner senses provide the whole personality with balance, and enable it to keep in contact with its vitality source.

This fact is responsible to a large degree for your death shock, and for the more powerful birth shock, when the new personality awakes to the prisonlike clutch of rigid camouflage pattern. [...] One of the basic purposes of existence on your plane is to enable the personality to focus powerfully and to form basic vitality into creative pattern. [...] However, it is extremely difficult for personalities to learn to organize vitality well enough to give it form, and therefore some troubles are to be expected.

It is a giant step and a vital one, for without it the personality would be at the mercy so to speak of the very energy of which he is composed. [...] Otherwise you would have a willy-nilly chaotic arrangement, with the personality incapable of maintaining any discipline as far as his own chemical and electronic components were concerned.

[...] On some other planes the mental enzymes are unnecessary, since the personality on a conscious level can work such transformations; and here again we run into an apparent contradiction, because while these transformations occur consciously on certain levels it is also true that the personalities concerned do not have to be conscious of the transformations. I am utterly independent of Jane in any terms that have practical meaning in generally held concepts of personality. I did not emerge from Ruburt’s personality nor person in any way. [...]

[...] There is instead not a working arrangement between various portions of one personality, but a working arrangement among many quite independent personalities. [...]

Now there is even something like the idea of a personality god, but hardly in the terms used by theologians. The personality of God, as it is generally conceived is again a one-dimensional concept based upon man’s small knowledge of his own psychology.

In a way, on one level, a personality seems to be operating “blind,” while in another it is aware of its accomplishments and challenges. Often a situation of unbalance is set up that would not exist had the personality not accepted the challenges and hence the potentials for an even greater development.

The more prosaic elements of the personality then take whatever measures seem necessary at the time, while new orientation is tried out. [...] They still provide however in one way or another a framework in which the personality feels itself free to pursue its goals. [...]

This means symbolically that your painting will also achieve an even greater depth because you are willing to encounter the emotionalism that is always highly personal, that speaks out through each portrait. You have a good understanding of reincarnation that Ruburt has lacked, yet that has been counterbalanced by a disinclination to encounter personalities directly in contact in the present. [...]

With the exception of the ego, the various parts of the personality do not react to time as a series of moments. It is therefore for the benefit of the whole personality that these impulses be given expression.

The personality must always be considered as motion, for no aspects of it are ever still.

This should be clearly understood, yet the personality is far from static. [...]

The whole personality knows quite well that the spirit survives and that the personality is capable of communicating with such spirits. [...] At the same time the whole personality is deeply committed and has always been, to such a psychic examination of existence. [...]

There is nothing, neither knowledge nor beauty nor truth, that exists independently of consciousness or personality. My personality is such that it is not intimate or understandable to you, now, simply because it is a personality based upon different root assumptions than your own, and has its prime existence in dimensions that are composed of personality structures and gestalts based on alien psychological activities.

[...] It is not a dead thing transmitted, since it has no meaning without personality and realization, and since it changes the personalities through whom it seems to flow. [...]

[...] Knowledge exists as realizations, and realizations presuppose personalities.

Knowledge automatically changes the personality and the camouflage structure through which it flows. [...]

His personal subconscious, to my relief and I hope to yours, takes care of itself quite adequately through the sublimating fabrications of fantasy into creative prose and poetry, in which I am in no way involved. I realize and understand that both of you rather suspect personal material when I give it. Even Ruburt believes it most possible that such material is somehow the result of his own personal subconscious conniving. [...]

(Jane said the new personality wasn’t as familiar with words as she herself is. Jane said she felt that Seth stood between her and the new personality to act as a translator in both directions. [...]

(Finally, Jane said that after break the personality couldn’t get her voice box going. [...] It was just that the personality had difficulty working the voice mechanism.

(Once again the new personality’s voice was high and thin and clear and distant. [...]

A survival personality in many respects is psychologically much different from the individual that he was. [...] When communications take place between a survival personality and a personality who exists within the physical system, then this involves a reshuffling, again, on the part of the survival personality, where the ego is momentarily given greater reign.

The survival personality therefore momentarily inserts his ego in its old position. [...] This reassembly however does cause some disorientation on the part of the survival personality. [...] The survival personality’s inner self gives this reassembled ego concepts in the same way that, often, the subconscious gives the ego concepts in physical existence.

The personality, even as you know it, is never static, always changing, and even the ego is not the same from one day to the next.

[...] The survival personality has somewhat the same relationship to the ego as the dreaming personality has to it now.

[...] The study of hypnotism will greatly enlarge man’s understanding of human personality in general. These separate states of consciousness, these multiple levels of awareness, these seemingly unrelated personality aspects, are not unnatural artificial productions, brought about through hypnosis. Hypnotism is merely a method that allows you to study the personality directly.

[...] In a brief communication one afternoon I explained to him the similarity between multiple personalities and the various aspects of the personality as it appeared in the dreaming and trance states.

Nevertheless it is known that cases of legitimate multiple personality exist. Here we have several personalities, all operating within one self, each unaware of the other, and each going his own separate way.

The primary ego is equally unaware of the other personalities, who very often are actually struggling for dominancy. [...] Here you have excellent examples that correspond to your dual or multiple personality thesis.

As the personal subconscious that you know maintains your familiar physical image, so does the core inner self beneath give this personal subconscious the power and ability. [...]

Reincarnation, so-called, cannot adequately be considered then as a phenomenon apart from the nature of personality either, for it is a direct result of the inner self’s attempt to project its personality characteristics outward into a world of physical actuality.

Personality fragment of your own. [...] Quite without knowing it, you materialized a personality fragment as playmate.

[...] Nevertheless, occasionally a personality will astound itself by such an image production as the one you met in the park. Usually this particular type of image production vanishes by the time the personality reaches adulthood. [...]

It is obvious, however, that all these powers of the entity cannot be vested in its various personalities. [...] Fragment personalities could not possibly contain the whole, but they do contain the seeds of the whole.

[...] In each life the new consciousness struggles to tie together the whole present personality, to use what is necessary from the subconscious for the good of the personality, and to keep submerged in the subconscious any knowledge that would threaten the dominancy of the present ego.
