With oils again the transparents for the mobility and vitality that gives the form meaning, the opaques to suggest the idea of physical time, and to suggest the apparent (underlined) duration of form.

(The oil head in question sits in my studio, still unfinished and has been seen by Jane often. One note of interest; technically speaking the oil colors I use contain no color named sepia, specifically, though, of course, a range of earth reds and browns are included. [...] The specific word sepia is more often attached to watercolors, as far as I know, than to oils. Jane also has used both watercolor and oil, as I have; and my watercolors do contain sepia.

(This effect appeared shortly before vacation, on an experimental head in oil I was working on. [...]

[...] My personal opinion is that the combination of all three elements—vitamins, peanut oil, and cod liver oil, have helped a great deal in achieving these improvements, and that each time we pass up the “treatment,” which is absurdly simple, we do miss out on something helpful. (Jane said she did not know I had taken cod liver oil as a child. [...] My parents have told me often that I displayed hay fever symptoms by the age of 3 or so, so evidently the first cod liver oil episode was earlier than this, and before my conscious memory. Jane insisted I hadn’t mentioned cod liver oil to her, though I had discussed castor oil.
