Such bonding provides a sense of safety and focus. [...]

Many people go through several such transformations, using symbolic transformations then that still serve to focus wonder and curiosity while keeping them well within the accepted picture. [...]

[...] This does certainly involve a looking inward on Ruburt’s part, but it is not self-hypnosis in the terms usually spoken of, merely a focusing upon an objective inner stimulus in much the same manner that you focus upon an outside camouflage stimulus.

[...] In other words, I change the alignment of my components, focusing my powers into one particular direction.

This would involve manipulations of muscles that would result in a temporary change of shape, a somewhat superficial but real adjustment of the physical body in its relation to space, and a consequent change of focus or direction in so far as the forward low thrust of the body into the hole. [...]

[...] As you leave your usual orientation, however, altering the focus of your consciousness, you may very well structure your new experience just as you do your physical one. [...]

When you begin to leave your home station and alter your focus, however, you leave behind you the particular familiar receptors for your projections. [...]
