The child emotionally was almost paralyzed with terror, hence the thyroid condition, hence also the child’s quick motions, fast, frightened responses that were desperate defense mechanisms. The new director is a figure of authority, and insists in fact upon being considered in such a light.

He is bound to set himself up as aloof and superior to the man in charge. He may be superior in many ways, but certainly not in all respects, and his disdainful reactions would naturally affect the poor new director. About him I will have something to say. Nevertheless you were right, Joseph, and certainly Ruburt’s attitude is at least partially to blame.

At the gallery, Ruburt interprets everything now between himself and the new director in terms of implied superiority or inferiority.

He, your director, has gamely held his ground. His insistence upon detail Ruburt takes as personal offense. The man is simply a stickler for detail. He is not rubbing Ruburt’s nose in every misspelled word, nor is he suggesting, as Ruburt suspects, that Ruburt is a mental numbskull because he is a poor speller.

You have what you may think of then as a split action, where one portion of the self, the inner ego, is allowed to travel through the other states of action that compose the whole self, purposefully as a director, and retain the knowledge thereby received.

It is this inner director who maintains all of these functions, and who is responsible for the physical health. It is this director to whom you must communicate when health fails. [...] It is this inner director who chooses the dream symbols in such a way that they will be meaningful to all layers or areas of the subconscious, and who is responsible for the amount, rate and type of subconscious data which is given to the outer ego by means of the intuitions.

[...] They are different from the inner ego or director in that the inner ego is conscious not only of itself, but of the outer ego, and is aware of the existence of the outer world, although not too much concerned with it unless the whole self becomes jeopardized through the actions of the outer ego.

He would, believe it or not, have ended up with a higher title within five years, though not of director, and it would have so soothed his inner ego that it would have settled for this. (Saturday, June 13, Jane and I attended a cocktail party in honor of Dee Masters, who was leaving as director of the art gallery where Jane is employed part time. At the party we also met the new director.

[...] of Dee Masters as director, a new director is trying out for the job; the situation is thus unsettled, and Jane is not in favor of some of her new duties and is thinking seriously of leaving the job. [...]

This, plus the new director’s implied sense of superiority, adds to the difficulty. [...]

The new director does indeed have a fussy, almost womanish love of detail for detail’s sake, and this sort of mind is one with which Ruburt finds it difficult to attune when closely involved. [...]
