They all added up to a steady barrage of self-criticism and fear of not writing, of perhaps doing the dishes instead, or cleaning the house, of making more work for me, of time spent answering the mail—whatever it might be.

The ego is not using its critical faculties however as a general rule.
As you realize, you can use the critical faculties.

The next step of course is to allow the ego to use its critical faculties also within the dream state.

The new personality is not entirely focused, and it must make immediate critical adjustments of the strongest nature. Death in your terms is a termination but does not involve such immediately critical manipulations.

My critical self became upset then, almost feeling that the dream was worthless. Then Seth said to the critical self, ‘This is symbolism … food for thought … far more complicated than you know and beyond any part of you that you understand.’ At once the dream self became soothed, almost hypnotically. The critical self kept thinking that this couldn’t happen in a dream.
[...]
At this point, my critical self separated from my dream self who was receiving the lecture. [In other words, Sue became aware of herself and the dream self.] My critical self instantly felt put off, since it could not understand or translate the lecture.
[...]
Seth began to lecture again, and my critical self began to fade out.

You will compare your own life and work often in a critical fashion to artists who were obsessed with one art from the beginning of their lives, or who pursued what is really a kind of straight and undeviating course—a brave courageous one, perhaps, and highly focused, but one that must be in certain respects (underlined) limited in scope and complexity, not crossing any barriers except those that seem to occur strictly within painting’s realm itself (all intently.

At times you expect from yourself a kind of accomplishment that the first kind of artist might produce, without any due regard for the fact that you are your own person, that you possessed a love of words as well, that you had excellent critical capacities.

When he was enthused about its future, the secondary aspects of making additional cash did not critically concern him.
The need for money, and the fear of being dependent then, led him to seek money through a method which, once acceptable, was now highly and critically unacceptable for the reasons given.

To whatever degree, the condemning, critical material too often becomes self-prophesying — for those who put merit on it (loudly) allow it to cloud their reactions.
None of the prophesied destruction man so fears is a reality in your time; nor, for all of the critical prophets through the ages, and the forerunners of doom, has the creativity of man destroyed itself in those terms.
[...]
You have been taught to concentrate upon criticisms and faults in your society; and in your times it seems that everything will work out wrong — that left alone the world will run down, the universe will die, man will destroy himself; and these beliefs so infiltrate your behavior that they organize much of your experience and rob you of the benefits nature itself everywhere provides in direct primary experience.

It can hardly be a coincidence that this “opportunity” materialized shortly after we began our new program suggested by Seth, and what we’ve learned about our attitudes toward publicity, scorn and criticism, and go forth.

While trusting himself enough to use the abilities—and in a largely uncongenial social atmosphere—he still found it necessary to be highly critical, and not to rely upon the abilities too much, lest he was unknowingly as deluded as many people would certainly say he was.

Because you have very limited ideas of what logic is, it seems to you that the dreaming self is not critical, or “logical”; yet it works with amazing discrimination, sifting data, sending some to certain portions of the body, and structuring memory. Sleeping pills also impede the critical functions of dreams that are so often overlooked.

The shock of birth of course is worse, since the personality is not entirely focused as a personality, and it must make immediate and critical adjustments of the strongest nature. Death on your plane is a termination but does not involve a new immediately-critical adjustment, since there is a time for rest and a time to catch up, so to speak.
Of course, the conscious mind cannot be aware of such important and critical inner decisions.

I find the conversation most amusing, and I myself will have a hand with any critics.
I am always amused and somewhat agitated at talk of so-called spirituality, when barriers have been effectively set up, cutting the nature of man into halves, and I will effectively deal with any such criticism.
