A certain number of birds shuttled back and forth within the formation at any one moment, changing their positions for reasons unknown to us, “talking” all the while. Once again, I found great reassurance in watching the spectacle of their flight. Those birds, I thought, knew where they were going — they knew what they were doing, in ways man could barely comprehend. I followed the formation until it disappeared in the mists and trees on the horizon.
