(Also after supper it developed that Miss Callahan, the retired school teacher who lives in the front apartment on our floor, had evidently had an attack of some kind and was in urgent need of help. Our neighbor across the hall first informed us. Jane went to see Miss Callahan, who had difficulty answering the door, was suffering from lapses of memory, and was indeed in poor condition. She had also taken several falls, and evidently had not been eating.

(As the hour for the session came and went, Jane began to get “nibbles” from Seth. At the same time I felt worse. I had not been helping Jane and felt guilty about it, and angry at the relatives. Finally, when Jane was talking to me in the studio at about 10:45, I had such a severe attack of cramps in the back I could not stand.

(Jane received the above paragraph after I had the attack of cramps.

(Sometime later during the night, when all was quiet, Jane awoke and received another message from Seth: Seth told me, Jane, I was wrong in saying to Rob “You were some help,” as his attack came on at once after the remark.)

Now symbolically any attack upon Ruburt becomes an attack by the parent, against which the child in Ruburt dares not retaliate. [...]

[...] There was ordinary retaliation, in that he was punished through word attacks, and through such corporal punishment as the invalid could give. But, and here Joseph we come to the real heart of the matter, the mother retaliated in the main not by a direct attack upon the child, but by causing the child to believe that its misbehavior could be, and very nearly was, going to result in the death of the mother. This has to do with the attack made on Ruburt by your domestic cat. [...]

She did express this violence, and again with fury, through verbal attacks to which Ruburt was extremely sensitive. [...]

Because of these feelings he reacts as if he is being attacked. The feelings however are the cause of the attack, for these feelings attract those elements that would otherwise be harmless. [...]

Reading this material and understanding the nature of this attack should end it. [...]

[...] His expectations, in other words, caused the attack, unfortunately. [...]

[...] Before though, the fact escaped me that Seth had started Mass Events—representing his and my direct attack on official dictums—or so it seemed to me. [...] Yet I’ve always known that these ideas conflicted with official ones—it’s just that before the “attack” was less direct....

[...] A host cell, say, is not simply attacked. It invites attack, though I am not pleased at all with the connotations of the word “attack.” [...]

Many adults, sensing their own abilities in one field or another, deliberately play down those abilities because they are afraid of standing out from “the masses” — or they are afraid they will be attacked by their peers. [...]

[...] If you believe firmly in poor health you may use this repressed energy to attack a physical organ — a gall bladder may become “bad.” [...]

(Long pause.) Because you believe that physical self-defense is the only way to counter such a situation then you will say, “If I am attacked by another person, are you telling me that I cannot aggressively counter his obvious intent to destroy me?”

(In my dream I’d written that he had a heart attack, but this appears to be off the mark, although pinpointing the correct area of his trouble. At times I’ve even wondered if I recorded the dream accurately, since in it I didn’t see him having a heart attack, only rubbing his chest area with Margaret helping him, and myself there as only a witness. [...]

(The sessions also stressed her fears of being attacked by the world if she used her abilities. [...] After all, hardly anything else could be worse in life than being attacked by her symptoms, so what’s there to lose?

[...] To attack medical corruption, or medical errors, or particular clinics, for example, is within bounds, but to attack the belief system of the entire structure is something else again.

[...] I also felt I was attacking the tooth, for whatever reasons. [...]

[...] You might think, for example, of the body being invaded by viruses, or attacked by a particular disease, and these ideas, then, may make you question. [...]

[...] He is afraid of being attacked, or he is afraid of the work being attacked, for that kind of reason, as his poetry was.

Ruburt spread his physical problem around more, bodywise; in such a way, he thought he could endure longer, you see, rather than attacking a critical organ.

[...] but I was being assaulted or attacked by.... [...]

[...] Someone very well known who established a church — if you will, a civilization — once said, “Turn the other cheek if you are attacked.” [...] You should turn the other cheek because you realize that basically the attacker only attacks himself.

[...] or hated me or tried to physically attack me... [...]

(Long pause.) The effect of those old negative beliefs, however, was stronger in Ruburt than in yourself, for he certainly thought at one time that if he curtailed physical motion people would not attack him for his amazing psychic and mental motion. [...]

[...] Earlier, Ruburt was afraid to trust his body, afraid to let his body heal him, for fear he would be attacked by others. [...]

(At 2:30 Jane began having panic attacks, just as she’s been doing lately. [...]
