[...] Now she reminded me that she misses keeping up with Seth’s dictation — that she has trouble deciphering my personal shorthand, and that not knowing what Seth has been saying makes her feel “uneasy.” This even though she and Seth have demonstrated often by now that as a team they’re most capable of producing a work “blind,” as it were, and on a continuing basis. [...]

[...] Seth’s words just above, “… your own thoughts give birth …” reminded me of one of my favorite passages from Seth Speaks. [...]

3. 4. I doubt if by his statement Seth means that physicists are attempting to study his CU’s (see Note 2) — certainly not yet, although a few scientists who have written us thereby show that they’re familiar with Seth’s thinking here. [...]

[...] I couldn’t remember what I’d said as Seth — and I wasn’t sure if I knew what magic was — or wasn’t — But I knew that the night was … magical, alive with its own natural ceremonies. And that somehow the Seth sessions were as natural and right as the summer evening.

There were several other themes floating about our lives … Sue Watkins’ new book Conversations with Seth about my E.S.P. classes was to appear in the fall. A vague uneasiness was growing in my mind: It seemed that Prentice-Hall was taking unusually long to officially clear The God of Jane and Seth’s The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events. [...]

Our next scheduled Seth session was for the following Monday — another day high in the 90s, and I found myself anticipatory and hopeful: Would Seth discuss some of those issues? [...]

SECOND ESSAY BY JANE ROBERTS: DREAMS FOR TWO AND SETH BEGINS A NEW PROJECT

(Seth dwelt on the taxicab symbol, and as he did so I found myself hoping that Peggy would notice it. We have wondered before about Seth making statements concerning something that might be in the presence of the subject for the test, only to have the subject fail to notice it. [...] Seth described a certain rowboat with initials and a symbol on its bow; but since Bill failed to notice rowboats in general, we were at a loss as to the accuracy of Seth’s information. Seth did insist that this particular boat had been in Bill’s close vicinity.

[...] To sum up first, we saw that Seth had used the name of the artist who had executed the block print, Roy Fox, as a starting point for data involving Jane and Roy and me, but for some reason had not dealt with the test object itself. We do not know why this happened, since Seth did not discuss the results this evening. Jane’s mother and a Christmas present also entered the test data, for reasons we do understand; here Seth tells us that Ruburt thinks of the package that his mother sent him.

[...] We have now obtained a written detailed report on Peggy Gallagher’s trip to Washington, as compared to Seth’s material on Peggy in the last two sessions. Seth scored many hits—Jane’s best effort in these tests by far. [...] She states that the material at the beginning of the Dr. Instream test data, on page 113, applies to a cocktail party she attended in Washington on Monday, December 6. Peggy states Seth’s description here of the cocktail party is quite correct, even to the fact that a woman was the main hostess, and that a man, her husband, was present with her. [...]

(It will be remembered that on two past occasions Seth has taken credit for making a candle flame grow noticeably in height. [...] Seth told us he was able to do such things when Ruburt’s attention was elsewhere, but that as soon as “he”, or Ruburt, became conscious of the possibility of such effects they were usually unattainable.

Last night, as I began typing Monday’s 915th session, I asked Jane why Seth hadn’t just called his “invisible particles” CU’s, or units of consciousness, as he’d done earlier in Dreams,² and as he’d always done in his other books. The question upset her, especially when I added that I was afraid Seth was repeating old material under a new term. [...]

Then, as we waited for a delayed session, Jane received material from Seth in which he very nicely explained his use of “invisible particles” on Monday evening—and since tonight he goes into his reasons for doing so, there’s no need to give them here. [...] And of course, Seth hadn’t been concerned at all.)

10:01 P.M. Near the close of Monday evening’s session, Seth had given us an insight into the nature of his own reality. [...] His statement is particularly intriguing because Seth indicated that in his nonphysical reality, “wherever that is,” he’s still developing, just as we are “here on earth.” [...]

[...] In the Preliminary Notes for the session I wrote that Seth had finished dictating Mass Events a month ago [in the 873rd session for August 15, to be exact], and that a week later I began finishing my own notes for the book. [...]

(Seth’s material above could explain the strange malaise she has been aware of in recent days, and we believe prompted Seth to call for the time off in the first place, in the 250th session.

[...] Seth spoke on the integration of our personalities also in the 228th session; the material grew out of his material on the poetry book Jane produced so effortlessly. [...] According to Seth we are just beginning to use our creative abilities.

[...] Seth cut the session short, and after the five witnesses had left Jane was physically sick to her stomach three successive times. [...] Later Jane told me she had very little memory of what Seth had said, even in the very strong voice; this is unusual for her.)

[...] Jane said Seth had surprised her by asking for the envelope. This was definitely Seth’s doing, she said, and he asked out of politeness.

(Some of the material obtained is verbatim, some is not because of Seth’s rapid delivery. [...] The very beginning of the session is not recorded because I was working in the studio in the back of the apartment when Seth came through as Jane, Eve and Tam sat in the living room.

[...] Tam told us that he now does try direct healing on persons he passes on the street—one of the points mentioned by Seth. [...] Tam said a lot of what Seth commented on concerned ideas he, Tam, had been speculating on to himself.

[...] In this session were perhaps a page and a half of Seth’s clairvoyant data re Tam and Miss Carr. [...] The last name of Cecile Grossman, an editor at Prentice-Hall, was mentioned by Seth, for instance. [...]

[...] When she spoke for Seth, Jane’s pace was somewhat faster than usual; eyes open often and quite dark, voice about average. [...]

As the Seth sessions continued, our activities fell generally into three main divisions. First of all, the emphasis was on the delivery of the Seth Material itself, as in the twice-weekly sessions Seth continued to explain the nature of nonphysical reality. Second, we became involved in trying to obtain “evidential” material, some definite instances of extrasensory perception on Seth’s part. Along these lines, we embarked on long-distance tests with a psychologist and a year’s series of envelope tests in which Seth was asked to identify the contents of doubly-sealed envelopes. At the same time, Seth began to send me on out-of-body journeys during some sessions and to offer, on his own, other instances of “paranormal” activity.

In my book, The Seth Material, I explained some of these episodes. [...] In the out-of-body experiences, Seth correctly described events that happened across the country and in Puerto Rico. [...]

Third, we were involved in vigorous subjective activity as we began to experiment with Seth’s psy-time regularly and to follow his suggestions concerning dream investigation, recall and utilization. [...] Though Seth told us that the experiments in dream recall would automatically make our consciousness more flexible, his real meaning didn’t come through to me until I found myself manipulating dreams and later having out-of-body experiences from the dream state.

[...] There are rules; Seth calls them root-assumptions that operate in all realities, our own included. [...] If we follow certain “rules” given to us by Seth, we will get more or less predictable results in the dream state — an indication that an “objective” dream dimension exists quite independently of us or our dreams, a dream dimension in which my dreams and yours have their being.

One can also say that the Seth books are a step farther removed than Jane’s are from the immediacy of life as we conceive of it. Even with the elimination of the Seth element from them, Jane’s own books would still represent a remarkable overall achievement, and had she never given expression to the Seth material I’m sure she would have developed her abilities in ways quite unknown to us now. Within her basic creativity lies the source of Seth as we are to understand him in our temporal reality. Her expression of Seth is an adjunct to that creativity, as he is the first to acknowledge.

If we had been appalled when Seth began giving his version of the beliefs her sinful self held, we were even more so when that self began to express itself “personally.” [...] Then Seth came through with another session on the same subject while Jane’s sinful self was in the midst of its own revelations! But she simply had to get that final, direct message from that portion of herself by herself; except for that one session, she even made Seth figuratively stand aside while she did so. But Seth himself was delighted with her breakthrough.¹⁶

That the Seth books outdo Jane’s other works has always puzzled us. Each one of her books, whether produced by herself or with Seth, is an equally valid and intimate expression of her basic creativity. Seth doesn’t come from some separate, more exalted portion of Jane’s psyche that’s off limits to her when she’s writing her own books. As he’s often said himself, he isn’t omnipotent: Like Jane, he shrinks from being a guru—and I stress that Seth doesn’t hold that attitude just because Jane does. [...]

[...] I think the Seth material contains some penetrating insights into such questions, but those ideas aren’t nearly well-enough known to help on a national scale. Seth didn’t comment upon the shooting, It wasn’t that he couldn’t, or wouldn’t—but that Jane herself is basically so innocent, so repelled by the violence involved in such episodes, that she often chooses not to go into the subject. I thought she might later in connection with other material, however; this had been the case when Seth discussed the mass suicide at Jonestown, Guyana, in November 1978.¹¹

(Not only that: Jane now had several other channels of data available from Seth. “God, I get impatient!” she exclaimed “But in physical reality I can get only one of them at a time, and you can write just one sentence at a time.⁷ Oh, forget it, Seth,” she added, half laughing, for that “energy personality essence” was ready with comments on what she’d just told me. [...] When she went into the kitchen she picked up more from Seth on astrology.

[...] Seth has said very little about this event, nor have we asked him to. [...] At some indefinite date we do plan to invite Seth to discuss the whole situation in detail.

(As we lay in bed after last Monday’s session, Jane told me: “I’ve got it — from Seth, I think: A really complete astrological chart would have to include not only the time of your birth, but that of your death.” [...]

(After John B. had left, Jane said she felt that many of Seth’s predictions re John & Searle would work out soon, & all at once. A glimmering from Seth?)

[...] Jane began to speak for Seth, in trance, after we had discussed the 364th session with J. Bradley, who is a medical salesman for Searle Drug.

[...] We hadn’t asked that Seth specifically discuss the following material, but thought it a possibility in the light of the conversation preceding tonight’s session.

(I thought, as soon as Seth had mentioned it, that the data regarding the Speakers and oral traditions went way back to when Jane produced Seth Speaks in 1970–71. [See Session 558 for November 5, 1970, in the appendix of Seth Speaks]

^* When he began dictating Seth Speaks way back in January 1970, Seth told us: “I write this book through the auspices of a woman of whom I have become quite fond. [...]

[...] Seth’s elders would have lived long before those in the Bible — or would they? [...]

[...] I mentioned to her my idea that Seth’s elders must predate by far the elders of the Bible, and she agreed.)

[...] In a way, and in those terms, this also applies in Jane’s case when she contacts Seth, even on the “psychological bridge” those two have constructed between them: When Seth tells us that his last physical life was in Denmark in the 1600s, then Jane and I represent future physical selves of his. I put it this way because Seth himself has commented that the three of us are “offshoots of the same entity.” [...] He is nevertheless an extension and materialization of the Seth that I was at one time.”

Among the subjects not discussed so far are Seth’s (and our own) ideas on reincarnation, counterparts, probable realities, and Frameworks 1 and 2. Jane briefly referred to Seth’s “magical approach” material in her dictation last month (see her own session of April 16, 1982, in Essay No. [...] So as counterpoint to her writings on the sinful self, I’ll be presenting two excerpts to hint at what Seth does mean by his magical approach.

Aside from any books that he may produce himself (and on whatever subjects), I’ve already made plans to put together a short volume featuring Seth’s discussions on the magical approach to reality. [...] My version will mainly feature the dozen or so sessions Seth gave in August—September 1980, and the poetry Jane was inspired to write because of them. She may also contribute an introduction to the book, showing how Seth’s and her own sinful-self information are related to the magical approach.

[...] Right here I’m dealing with just two of Seth’s larger concepts. [...] For Seth, basically there is no time, only a great “spacious present” that’s a manifestation of a sublime, indescribable All That Is. Our gross physical senses, and indeed our very bodies, insist upon interpreting the spacious present in linear terms, however—through the inevitable processes of birth, aging, and death—so to help us get his point here Seth advances his ideas of reincarnational selves and counterpart selves in ways we can understand sensually.

(The group of four, exclusive of myself, makes the largest gathering Seth has yet addressed. [...] They did not know about Seth but were somewhat familiar with our work in ESP, and of course would learn of Seth’s existence when Jane’s ESP book is published. Probably we would have preferred that our friends, two young men and two young ladies, do more background reading before meeting Seth; on the other hand, with the coming publication of Jane’s book we have been somewhat curious as to the reaction of interested friends to Seth. Conditions were good last Friday evening so Seth spoke at some length in a general way.

(Although they were surprised at first our guests did not stay surprised long, and began to bombard Seth with questions. [...] Some of the questions were suprisingly acute, and involved aspects of the existence of Seth, and his abilities, that Jane and I had not thought of.

(One question concerned what Seth actually “sees” when he is confronting a witness, and he answers this briefly in tonight’s session. [...] There was a lighted candle on the coffee table before the group, and as Seth was speaking the flame increased noticeably in height. [...]

[...] Jane and I were certainly hoping Seth would go into John’s experience, whereby John heard from Seth, more deeply.)

(I personally had one question for Seth. I was rather upset at the way my notes were running so long in some of the book sessions, and wanted Seth’s comment. [...] I needed Seth’s ideas, I thought.

[...] Not all the sensations involved are pleasant at first, as Seth indicated they might be. [...]

As her psychic abilities began to rapidly grow, following her initiation of the Seth material late in 1963, Jane couldn’t help but become more and more concerned about consciously enlarging her “scope of identity.” [...] Very understandable, then, that Jane, both for herself and for Seth, would write so eloquently about the disparity between her psychic abilities and “the currently scientifically-oriented blend of rationalism,” as Seth describes that quality earlier in this Session Six for The Magical Approach.

[...] As she researched Jane’s published and unpublished notes, journals, and books for The Magical Approach, Laurel learned that my wife had originally intended to call this book The Magical Approach: A Jane/Seth Book, and wrote of it as being “a psychic-naturalistic journal.” If Jane had planned to add to Seth’s original sessions, what might she have included? [...] Laurel pointed out a number of forceful passages Jane wrote on cultural acceptance in The God of Jane in 1980 — the same year in which she dictated The Magical Approach for Seth. [...]

[...] In some ways the Seth material has been given credit by the establishment; being taught as university course work, for example. [...]

[...] I have absolute faith that Seth and Jane Roberts, as well as Rob, know how I mean that with all my heart.

[...] When Seth spoke of my hands, Jane saw my astral hands upraised—as I was really writing at the time, with the palms outward, toward her. [...] I told her that although the penis had reverted to its original condition, I had been aware of a noticeable and steady improvement in the right hand condition, although no previous suggestions or energy had been sent to the hands before, by Seth.

(“Good evening, Seth. [...]

[...] The first was that she was momentarily disoriented when she came out of trance because the chair she was sitting in was not where she thought it was while speaking for Seth.

[...] This reminded her of the recent session when she momentarily seemed to be speaking as Seth from near the same bookcase.

(It happened that in ESP class last night Seth came through with material pertaining to the nine families of consciousness he’d begun discussing a week ago; see the 732nd session. These class excerpts, which I’ve rearranged somewhat for easy reference, may be used when considered with book material still to come, since Seth will occasionally use the class format to supplement his dictation in our “regular” sessions. The quotations also lead us back to the circumstances surrounding Seth’s delivery of his first session on the Sumari.)

(I shouldn’t have been surprised last evening to hear Seth say that such an impetus had triggered Jane’s Sumari abilities, for today, when I reread the 598th session for November 24, 1971, I was reminded that he’d said the same thing then. The death of the student’s father had taken place on Thursday, November 11 of that year; Jane’s father, Delmer, died without forewarning on the following Tuesday, November 16; Jane came through with Sumari in class one week later, on November 23; and the next night, in the 598th session, Seth discussed Sumari for the first time.

1. I can note a good deal later that Seth’s material on our making further distinctions in the families of consciousness, beyond the nine he’s already named for us, is certainly related to the passages from a private session that I quoted in the last three paragraphs of Note 8 for the 732nd session: Seth stated that Peter Smith and I “are and are not counterparts” — that with another in this life each of us may often come together, then part, “forming a counterpart relationship when it suits your purposes….”

Now (Seth told us last night) you can expand the functions of any particular family group, or you can cut it down, by deciding how precise you want to be. [...]

(In that same class, however, Seth also brought our biological nature “down to earth” in most literal terms. [...] I know one thing: Seth’s delivery won’t be soon forgotten. [...]

(Seth has always cautioned us against being too self-righteous; warned us against considering silence, seriousness, or piety as synonymous with goodness or “truth.” [...] But when dealing directly with people, Seth is — direct, and most perceptive. [...]

(In Session 725 Seth discussed the spiritual aspects of our biological nature, and in Note 4 for that session I presented brief excerpts from the material he’d given in ESP class the night before, on the truly limitless “ceilings to the self” or identity.

(Earlier that evening, class members had been discussing some of the letters they’d been answering for Jane.¹ One young man mentioned “feeling like shit” in connection with another matter — a remark that Seth must have overheard. [...]

[...] Volume 2 is a massive book, yet I still couldn’t believe all the time — almost exactly five years — that had passed since Jane, Seth, and I began work on it. [...] Naturally we’d been involved in a number of other projects at the same time, as I’ve indicated in my notes for Mass Events, yet for me especially the publication of the two volumes of “Unknown” Reality meant that we had arrived at a certain point in the development and presentation of the Seth material: In those books, through correlating them in a modest way with our previous works, I’d attempted to show the reader just what the three of us had managed to achieve before Seth led us into Psyche — and, as it developed, Mass Events.

(Jane and I have had two most pleasant surprises since Seth gave the 860th session on June 13. [...] On the 14th we received from Prentice-Hall our complimentary copies, just off the press, of Seth’s Psyche; then on the 18th we received Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality.

1. Just before giving the 861st session last week, Jane received from Seth some intriguing material on the idea that in psychological therapy, the good intents and impulses beneath the client’s emotional and physical hassles should be searched out by the analyst. [...] A book could actually be involved — Seth’s next — on “the therapy of value fulfillment.” [...]

[...] They left late enough so that Jane decided to skip the session, even though earlier in the day she’d written notes on material that Seth had mentally informed her he’d cover.

2. Just for my own study, I later inserted “[almost]” in Seth’s sentence because I hadn’t been quick enough to ask him to elaborate upon “the end result of an infinite series of sequences” when Jane delivered his material for him. After the session I began to wonder if Seth hadn’t contradicted himself by saying there could be an end result of something infinite. [...] Seth had indicated in the preceding paragraph of the session that such faltering of the reasoning abilities may occur. [...]

That note makes a handy reference for related concepts, for in it I also briefly discussed subatomic “particles”; the components of atoms; molecules; supposed faster-than-light particles (tachyons); Seth’s CU’s, or units of consciousness; his assertion that consciousness can travel faster than light in out-of-body states; Jane’s scientific vocabulary; and Einstein’s special theory of relativity. In addition, I gave references to other material, including some by Seth, on several of those topics.

Sue Watkins has informed us that she’s approximately halfway through writing Volume 2 of her Conversations With Seth.

Jane was so much at ease tonight that she thought of skipping the session, but she decided to try for it because she’d picked up material on it from Seth today, and made a few notes. [...]
