[...] I told Jane that, once heard, much of Seth’s material had the quality of being so obvious that we in turn seemed to be quite opaque not to have reached the same conclusions ourselves. After considering the alternatives Seth suggested immediately following last break I decided to leave his delivery in place in the session as a guide for the reader; parallels can be drawn with many other situations, I think having nothing to do with art or houses.
[...] She wrote recently: “We regard Seth’s material on counterparts and families of consciousness as excellent explanations — as thematic frameworks that help us perceive and organize facets of our greater reality that are ignored by conventional academic disciplines. Seth’s explanations stand for aspects of reality that usually escape us.
[...] In the meantime, then, Seth’s material in this (737th) session deals only with the house on Foster Avenue, in Elmira, and — as discussed shortly — with Mr. Markle’s house in Sayre, Pennsylvania, since those two places were the ones we were consciously interested in at the moment. Seth made no predictions, about the hill house or any other, nor did we ask him to.
[...] My opening notes for sessions 714–15 each include material on Jane’s psychic library, and Seth himself discussed it in the latter session. Politics, of course, contains extensive material on the same subject (as well as on our house-hunting adventures).
[...] I said before the session that if we got house material I really wanted good answers, that I’d stay out of it as much as possible. …” Jane went into the kitchen, looking for matches. All in all, I thought she was “recovering” quite easily from Seth’s data, and that she was helped here because we’d revisited the hill house today. Every so often someone wants to know about the extent to which we follow Seth’s advice or information, and I suppose a good answer is that we may decide to go along with it if it suits our conscious purposes to do so. Sometimes we don’t agree with what Seth tells us even when we know it’s good counsel. [However, Jane and I freely admit that on occasion we’ve made the wrong choice in deciding to ignore what Seth had to say; in retrospect we’ve seen that he gave out very valid material.]
(Seth had used more than half of Monday’s session to discuss our house hunting in connection with Sayre and Foster Avenue. Some of his related material there had been fairly personal, but we’d left it in place because of its general application. When Seth added the hill house to his list tonight, however, his connecting information about Jane and me was so intimate that we decided to delete parts of it. [...]
[...] She still looked a bit teary, but at the same time I was sure now that we’d steered away from any probable reality involving Foster Avenue — and perhaps Sayre too, I thought, considering Seth’s material at 10:15 tonight.3
[...] Jane proceeded to deliver for Seth a few more paragraphs of house material, here deleted, followed by this exchange.)
(It happened that in ESP class last night Seth came through with material pertaining to the nine families of consciousness he’d begun discussing a week ago; see the 732nd session. These class excerpts, which I’ve rearranged somewhat for easy reference, may be used when considered with book material still to come, since Seth will occasionally use the class format to supplement his dictation in our “regular” sessions. The quotations also lead us back to the circumstances surrounding Seth’s delivery of his first session on the Sumari.)
1. I can note a good deal later that Seth’s material on our making further distinctions in the families of consciousness, beyond the nine he’s already named for us, is certainly related to the passages from a private session that I quoted in the last three paragraphs of Note 8 for the 732nd session: Seth stated that Peter Smith and I “are and are not counterparts” — that with another in this life each of us may often come together, then part, “forming a counterpart relationship when it suits your purposes….”
(I shouldn’t have been surprised last evening to hear Seth say that such an impetus had triggered Jane’s Sumari abilities, for today, when I reread the 598th session for November 24, 1971, I was reminded that he’d said the same thing then. The death of the student’s father had taken place on Thursday, November 11 of that year; Jane’s father, Delmer, died without forewarning on the following Tuesday, November 16; Jane came through with Sumari in class one week later, on November 23; and the next night, in the 598th session, Seth discussed Sumari for the first time.
Now (Seth told us last night) you can expand the functions of any particular family group, or you can cut it down, by deciding how precise you want to be. [...]
[...] This was the end of the material on Seth’s book. The balance of the session was taken up with personal material. [...]
[...] We learned later that Seth’s material was very helpful.
(Before the session tonight I discussed two questions with Jane that I hoped Seth would consider. We also wanted some personal material. [...]
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
(See page 266 of the last session, concerning Jane seeing Seth’s apparition. I had interpreted Seth’s material as indicating that Jane saw the apparition only while dreaming, and not in the waking state, as she has maintained all along.
(Tonight Jane said she interpreted the data to mean that she momentarily saw Seth’s apparition after waking up, before she switched to usual use of the outer senses. Note that Seth agrees with this.)
When you perceive more and more with your inner senses, you have more extensive raw material, better supplies, more available data. This should automatically bring about refinements within the physical structure to carry the additional data, and provide new outlets for materialization. [...]
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
(A note: Seth’s material reminded me of his comments in the deleted 371st session for October 11, 1967. I read it last night; Seth answered my questions about what he sees when he looks at me, both as himself, and through Jane’s eyes. Very interesting, and material both of us had forgotten many years ago.)
(Both of us have been rereading Seth’s own resolutions for the New Year frequently, as given on January 1, 1979. [...] I could list many more, but probably won’t. I still don’t think Seth would want to spend much time discussing that old material in any detail, since he’s said many times that focusing on what was wrong in the past is negative and self-defeating. [...]
[...] “I hope Seth doesn’t talk too loud,” Jane said as we waited for him to come through, “or I might lose that tooth.” [...]
[...] The psychiatrist’s letter (Dr. Beahrs) represents but one communication, but many others read the material and use it, and do not write you, any more than you write to other authors. [...]
3. Originally I’d planned a series of notes for this session, in which to explore Seth’s ideas on genetics versus those held by the scientific establishment. [...] If they knew about it, I expect that most members of the scientific community would disagree with much of the excellent material Seth gave in this session. [...] But Jane and I don’t try to bend others to our way of thinking; the reality that our species is creating is too big and varied for that; we believe only that we’ll have to explore questions like those involving genetics and consciousness in our own ways, and with Seth’s help.
(I was shaking my head no, grinning, before Seth finished asking his question. My amusement wasn’t directed at the seriousness of his material, but arose because of the intense scrutiny Seth directed at me. [...]
I’m sure that Seth would be the first to agree that consciousness obviously contains an unlimited number of viewpoints, regardless of which ones we humans may choose to call “true” at any particular time. Consciousness is just as amenable to having some of its physical manifestations scientifically studied, its parts manipulated through “genetic engineering,” as it is to encompassing Seth’s material. [...]
[...] The men have low sperm counts and may not be able to sire children in the normal manner, yet Jane and I think that this rare group event—the only one of its kind on record—fits in with Seth’s material about the millions of variations contained within our species’ vast genetic pool. [...]
In class yesterday evening, Seth first came through with some very earthy material that’s presented as Appendix 24. Then Jane read her notes on strands of consciousness, which — I can add later — also found their way into Chapter 12 of Politics. Seth soon returned in class with the following comments; he referred to Jane’s ideas mainly, yet as he talked I began to understand my experience with my father and his after-death situation as I perceived it.
[...] “Maybe Seth will talk about our own things instead of giving dictation — your material on your father [which I received this past Sunday evening], or what you got on your mother this afternoon. [...]
(Jane’s material on strands of consciousness2 had actually developed because of my experience involving my father while I was in an altered state of consciousness. That episode had upset me to some degree, but Jane’s discussion of the subject in Politics, plus a few comments Seth made in ESP class last night, helped me put the affair in a more objective light.
[...] Then Jane, speaking for Seth, delivered the following material in a most emphatic manner. [...]
It is unfortunate that the displacement in material occurred. [...] I believe, in fact, that Ruburt’s student will be able to collaborate some of that material.
([John and I:] “Good evening, Seth.”)
I had some pertinent remarks to make this evening, and since Philip (Seth’s entity name for John Bradley) is indeed a friend, I shall feel free to make them, although they are somewhat of a personal nature, and directed to you and our reluctant medium.
[...] His doubts have held back the overall quality of our material, since I was not often allowed to come through completely enough.
5. See my account of the Brenner dream, Jane’s interpretation of it, and Seth’s material on it, in the August 11 session.
In this session is material that will indeed allow Ruburt to get out of the present situation, but we will continue the discussion at our next session. I have given you some such material before, as I intend to give you shortly. With your own recent experiences, however, the material will be more meaningful and significant now, so that you can indeed put it this time to better use, and I will also be somewhat more specific. [...]
1. Seth is the “energy personality essence” Jane speaks for while in a trance or dissociated state. Since he calls Jane by the male-oriented name of her larger or whole self, “Ruburt,” it follows that Seth also calls her “he,” “his,” and “him.”
“Then, in a private session held on the evening of September 17, 1977, Seth came through with a very exciting concept called ‘Framework 1 and Framework 2.’ Jane and I were so struck by the practical, far-reaching implications of this proposition that we began a concerted effort to put it to use in daily life. Briefly and very simply, Seth maintains that Framework 2, or inner reality, contains the creative source from which we form all events, and that by the proper focusing of attention we can draw from that vast subjective medium everything we need for a constructive, positive life in Framework 1, or physical reality.”
[...] Note that the final paragraph of Seth’s material is incomplete— and that was Seth’s second version, after I’d asked him to repeat portions of it. [...]
[...] We’ve been reading sessions—usually the late ones—each day, and these serve as beneficial suggestions, of course, especially in light of Seth’s material in Sunday’s session. [...]
[...] She’d picked up a few suggestions from Seth during the day—among them that we should just forget words like “arthritis.” [...]
[...] I will at a later date have more to say concerning the ways the body utilizes such drugs—very interesting material, but not for this moment. [...]
(It will be recalled that in the 68th session, page 221, in relation to Bill’s projected trip, Seth had stated that he saw Bill meeting an older man “with prickly hair,” and that he saw a rowboat with a symbol on it. An older man and a boat both are mentioned above, and when Bill returns from Provincetown, Cape Cod, which is indeed on the ocean, it will be interesting to compare Seth’s material with what Bill actually saw and/or did.
Each consciousness, besides the material structure or material form, also possesses a psychological structure that exists in a depth and solidity in another perspective which the outer senses do no perceive. [...]
In all cases however, we would have material structure of one sort or another, created by consciousness according to its ability to perceive, manipulate and construct an inner psychological structure, in this case an idea, into material form.
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
[...] Seth had given us on the condition of Miss Callahan. [...] To me this implied that Miss Callahan was in better condition, but Jane said she felt otherwise, that Seth’s material here was not distorted.
[...] She said she thought Seth kept her going until he had gotten all of the above material through. [...]
[...] She felt Seth was ready to talk about the American Society for Psychic Research; but she was so afraid of making a mistake that she couldn’t let the material come through yet.
There is only a relatively small layer of personal material, and therefore egotistical and distortive material, at the upper reaches of the subconscious. [...] For the record, you understand that I am referring to egotistical material as that portion that is concerned with the outer camouflage-oriented personality, and that the stronger inner ego actually represents the power and ability behind the outer ego.
[...] During class I read aloud Seth’s material from the 738th session on the Grunaargh family of consciousness,1 which Sue had tuned in to during the 598th session for November 24, 1971. [...]
“When I first mentioned the family name, Grunaargh (as Seth spelled it out for us in that session over three years ago), I knew that its members had something to do with printing, or the promulgation of printed material. [...]
“When Seth listed the families of consciousness last January,3 but didn’t include the Grunaargh, Rob asked him about it in the 738th session. In Jane’s final class, Rob read Seth’s explanation having to do with family ‘mergings.’ Right away, right there in class, I knew what was behind the feeling I’d had about this family: Members of the Grunaargh, and I personally, were involved in the invention of movable type. [...]
[...] Actually, she told us, the material available to her from that time “could go on” indefinitely. [...]
[...] Jane and I have been trying to think of a good title for her book dealing with Seth and the material, since she has begun work on it. [...]
[...] The plans are simple; at session times next week Bill and Peggy will attempt to concentrate on Jane, Seth and me, with a view to seeing what Seth can pick up.
(It will be recalled that Seth himself [or Jane?] initiated the idea of asking me if I had an envelope test at each session. [...] In that session however Seth also said it would be better if Jane did not know whether I planned a test before any particular session.
(In the 180th session however, Seth’s comments led into the second envelope test, and in the 183rd session Seth queried me outright as to whether I had a third test for him. [...]
[...] Seth’s “Framework 2” would be this magical area, of course, I thought. Yet except for the beginning of that (part) of Seth’s material, Framework 24 never really got through to me emotionally. [...]
3. See Appendix A for Jane’s material on how some of her own thoughts “relate in one way or another to the thoughts of others.” Included also are excerpts from Seth’s material on a different prediction experience of Jane’s.
As Seth I’ve produced five previous books: Seth Speaks; The Nature of Personal Reality; The “Unknown” Reality, Volumes I and II; The Nature of the Psyche; and The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events, and Seth is halfway through a sixth book: Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment. [...] Seth doesn’t answer mail though, or do any typing, and so as a result of those trance hours Rob and I spend a good deal of our conscious energy dealing one way or another with the effects of that trance life.
1. Jane Roberts writes in The God of Jane: “Since late 1963, I’ve clocked approximately 4,000 hours of trancetime, during which the Seth sessions have been held twice weekly. [...] I’m not unconscious but conscious in a different way, at another level … This state of perception has nothing to do with classical pathological dissociation; and its products — Seth’s five books — display a highly-developed intellect at work and give evidence of a special kind of creativity. In those trance hours I ‘turn into someone else.’ At least I am not myself to myself; I become Seth, or a part of what Seth is. [...]
(The following material is from the 898th session. Before the session I’d mentioned to Jane that I’d like something from Seth about my dream of early this morning. [...]
[...] Jane didn’t remember the dream material. [...] Later I thought that I should have asked Seth what kind of interpretation of the dream a conventional psychologist would have given. [...]
[...] Next I began to remind myself of Seth’s material in the last three private sessions—to live in the present and stop projecting into the future, that my body didn’t deserve to be treated that way, and didn’t understand such musings. [...]
[...] I’d wanted Seth to say something more specific about my being the same age [as a woman] as my father in the dream.)
(Seth began explaining his source and the source of this material in the very early sessions. [...] By the 63rd session he was explaining his state as energy not materialized into mass; this after telling us in the 54th session that Jane, Seth and I had been part of the same entity once; he could not tell us this earlier, he said, because Jane and I would have immediately jumped to the conclusion that he was part of Jane’s subconscious mind.
(Seth’s statements are presented in full from each session, with the comments from Peggy and Bill just below each statement in italic type. The Gallaghers agreed on each answer, concerning the Puerto Rico material. [...] We begin with Seth’s material on them from the 199th session for October 18,1965, at 9 PM.)
(As in the Puerto Rico experiments, Seth’s material is presented line by line, in regular type, with Peggy’s answers below. [...] Begin with Seth’s material from the 214th session for December 6,1965.)
(The Gallaghers gave their written answers to this material just as they had to Seth’s material. [...]
(Seth caught me. [...] It was — very much so: In material covering several pages, he discussed my mother and her recent experiences with probabilities in her advanced old age. The complicated family situation involving Mother Butts isn’t gone into here, but Jane and I decided to include the more generalized parts of Seth’s information; we think it will help others in their relationships with old people.
[...] See Chapter Fourteen for some of Seth’s material on probabilities.)
[...] Jane said she’d used the phrase given by Seth at 9:04, “Facts are only accepted fiction….” just this afternoon in her own theoretical work, Aspect Psychology; she had also written about ideas very much like those Seth presented at 9:15.
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
[...] At the time Seth said it was a wise move, and that from that point on Jane would do well with her writing. [...] Seth also dealt rather extensively with the conflict between Jane and the director of the Arnot in the following sessions: 74, 75, 77, 79, 82, 84 and 85. All of Seth’s material on the situation has worked out. [...]
(Seth began discussing the inner senses in the 20th session; by the 50th session he had gone into some detail on nine of them, with more to come. By the 59th session he had also included eleven basic laws of the inner universe, plus three properties of physical material.
(Seth began discussing the inner ego along with the inner senses, so material on it is woven through the sessions. [...]
[...] Jane learned little about their trip other than that the Gallaghers took many notes to use in checking against Seth’s notes; and that Bill found himself involved in a “strange experience” with a piano player and what he thought was telepathy. [...]
