They represented parts of his own psyche, still, at that level of consciousness, not having quite assimilated the greater knowledge or experience, so he felt he needed protection—the protection that would beautifully, cleverly and insidiously serve all of his purposes, allowing him to go ahead as he wanted to, but with control drawn back to the body’s discontent. The discontent would still keep him at home working, and yet also serve as a control against too much inner spontaneity until he learned that he could indeed trust the new world of experience.

Had you been more relaxed when using the pendulum, “it” would not have needed to soothe your fears, and would have realized that you were quite capable of learning the answer. The fact is that a “yes” answer—at that point—would not have particularly helped you—a fact known to the unconscious, of course. [...]

For one thing, dependable overall use of the pendulum would ideally entail some moments each day, so that rapport could be established under even circumstances, without the pressure, say, of wanting to know about a problem or a symptom. [...]

You used to wonder what there was about her that so captivated your father, since he had an obvious preference for her, and you would watch her secretly trying to find the answer. [...]

Fell, has written asking for photographs pertaining to the Seth book; in connection with this and in answer to my question, Seth said he would be amused to see a reproduction of my painting, purporting to be Seth, in the book. In this manner a tantalizing sample of the material in several aspects would be given. Questions would be raised in the minds of the readers, and in other books the various ideas could be expanded from the material, and these questions answered. In this way you would be presenting an overall picture that would later be filled in.

The first section would then remain as it is, basically, except for any changes Ruburt wishes to make in small matters. I would like, you see, the overall picture presented as much as possible. [...]

For example had you left your last job when you were first very strongly tempted to do so, and when Ruburt urged you to do so, you would not have become sick in the way that you were. There would have been a period of finan cial strain but it would have been over by now, and it would have been a period of financial difficulties mainly. That is, you would have found yourself capable of dealing with the problem since you would not have used up so much energy as you tried to hold off the inevitable.

Effects would seem to be evidence, and therefore when you probe into seemingly empty spaces you will receive effects which will be evidence. [...] No one has seen wind but since at times its effects are so observable it would be idiocy to say that wind did not exist. [...]

I was following Ruburt’s performance, knowing full well that the person who gave the information would not be willing to stay in the background. I wondered how well my student would follow my direction, and he did well.

In the past, you see, it would have been highly improbable that Ruburt could have received that kind of information. He would not have allowed himself the highly focused sort of trance necessary, for rather specialized data. [...]

[...] As Seth left, Jane said, she got from him that the particular trance he was discussing tonight could, or would, be used in sessions; it would let Seth come through “stronger,” though Jane then questioned the use of this word, and said “immediate” might be a better one.
