The problems arise in response to ideas that you once accepted as facts of life —ideas that have indeed exerted great sway—ideas that are responsible for much of the world’s woe. You made brave breakthroughs, for the sessions never would have begun or continued—but to maintain your peace of mind you still had to keep your mental footing in the world of those old beliefs. [...]

When the race began physical focus it learned to behave in a more or less permanent-appearing environment, and so it developed a suitable self that also appeared to be permanent enough for a time within that world.

Your curiosity did not involve philosophies, but had to do with the physical world, and particularly with its water passageways—an interest that did indeed find you and the Caribbean, later, in either the 14th or 15th century, directly involved with piracy—and I believe with some controversy involving the French government at the time.

Now the church finally placed all of the condemnation of its religious laws against certain psychological and mystical experiences — not because it did not consider them realities, of course, but precisely because it recognized too well the disruptive influence that, say, revelationary experience could have upon a world order that was based upon a uniform dogma.

It feels insecure at best in a world with which it is fairly familiar, and it vigorously fights any new adoptions within that world, for it must then change accordingly.
