(We had several questions for Seth, including the one noted at the end of the last session: Why didn’t the unconscious realize it was going too far in its protective role? [...] Two corollary questions I came up with yesterday are these: Does the unconscious know there is a physical body? [...]
[...] We’re keeping a list of all questions, with the daily answers, and are now seeing some notable shifts in answers, indicating improved communication between her conscious and unconscious selves.
[...] They could not be reasoned with, and the unconscious was left holding the bag, so to speak.
In a strange fashion because of his fears, now—and these particular fears can be countered with communications with the unconscious, and with understanding—he was afraid simply that so many people knew of his existence. [...]
(12:23.) Those who want to use their unconscious precognition of such an event will take advantage of it — save themselves, and choose not to be involved. [...]
[...] Other data will seldom be required consciously, yet it must always be available to unconscious portions of the self. [...]
[...] Unconscious material is admitted into consciousness according to those beliefs an individual holds about himself, his reality, and his place in it. [...]
So can a catastrophe be used consciously or unconsciously, according to the individual.
[...] These theories hold that the intellect and usual consciousness are far inferior to the inner “unconscious” portions of being, and that all the answers are hidden from view. [...]
Both groups ignore the miraculous unity of the psyche, the fine natural interworkings that exist between the so-called conscious mind and the so-called unconscious — the incredibly rich interaction as each gives and takes.
The “unconscious” simply contains great portions of your own experience in which you have been taught not to believe. [...]
It was at this point that the nature of the conscious mind itself became so misunderstood, and those unrecognized or denied powers were assigned to unconscious portions of the self by ensuing schools of psychology. [...]
I have dealt with this extensively here because creative, unconscious energy is so often a part of the dream state. Apparently, in my case at that time, the “intrusive” unconscious material had to be propelled through to my consciousness during my waking state, since I never regained memory of the initial dream in which the information was originally given.
The Impetus Behind Unconscious Intrusions
I’m including in this chapter a few poems as notes of a subjective autobiography, to show what events triggered this first release of unconscious material on my part, opening the doors to the interior universe; for now I believe that certain personal conditions are characteristic prerequisites for such developments, that the channels of intuitive knowledge are opened according to the intensity of individual need. [...]
This book is concerned mainly with dreams, but it will also stress the true mobility of our consciousness which makes possible dreaming (and astral projections) and those unconscious abilities that are so vital to our functioning.
However, the sleeping portion of the species represents the brain’s unconscious activities in the body — particularly when you think of the motion of all of the species’ actions en masse in a given day. Those conscious motions have an unconscious basis. [...] If you think of mass daily action as performed by one gigantic being, then all of those conscious actions have unconscious counterparts, and a great intercommunication of an inner nervous system must take place.
Part of such a brain would have to be awake all of the time, and part engaged in unconscious activity. [...]
You felt before, unconsciously, that you were drifting and that life had little meaning. [...] Unconsciously, therefore, you chose a situation in which a crisis was precipitated, rousing all the greatest elements of heart and soul, so that they must strain to understand, to perceive, to triumph. [...]
[...] Unconsciously of course each man and woman knows, and yet hides the knowledge.
[...] Instead, you form the physical body that you know at a deeply unconscious level with great discrimination, miraculous clarity, and intimate unconscious knowledge of each minute cell that composes it. [...]
[...] But this seemingly unconscious portion of yourself is far more knowledgeable, and upon its smooth functioning your entire physical existence depends.
I call this seemingly unconscious the “inner ego,” for it directs inner activities. [...]
But however we attempt to define Seth’s reality, I’m convinced of one thing by now: He is delivering to our conscious minds our deepest unconscious knowledge about ourselves, the world, the universe, and the source of Being Itself. Not that Seth claims any kind of omnipotence, because he doesn’t. His material, however, is clearly providing such translations of unconscious knowledge, and intuitive disclosures; disclosures, according to Seth, no more remarkable than those available in nature itself, but we have forgotten how to read nature’s messages; disclosures no more mysterious than those available in our own states of inspiration, but we’ve forgotten how to decipher those communications too. [...]
[...] Perhaps the Seth sessions themselves harken back to some ancient time when we received much of our pertinent information about ourselves in just such a fashion: one of us journeying for the others into the “mass unconsciousness” — a journey that somehow altered and expanded the personality — and then communicating our visions as best we could.
[...] For if Seth is only a psychological model filled out by my unconscious trance material, then he certainly puts our usual concepts of personality to shame, and by implication shows that we ourselves have a long way to go if we are to use our full potential.
[...] On the other hand of course Ruburt also expected you to come up with and initiate the noncontact behavior when he felt that your relationship was getting too close for comfort, that his physical love for you might lead him some time to neglect consciously or unconsciously proper contraceptive behavior.
[...] This has been a highly formal, ritualized behavior pattern, a psychological dance, so formalized on a subconscious level that it left little leeway for spontaneity, and threatened to freeze you both in highly unconscious regimented behavior. [...]
[...] It was partially a distorted, unconscious understanding of this that led Ruburt to the exaggerated projection of that restrictive role to those other areas of your life.
Ruburt is apt to be more adjusting in that area, but here also you see, you have set certain unconscious points, boundaries on either side between what you consider too close contact, and too little. [...]
[...] The animals’ instincts and their natural situations kept their numbers in bounds; and with unconscious, unknowing courtesy they made room for all others.
[...] It follows the unconscious order that is within it even as there is a definite order, relationship and limit to the number of chromosomes. [...]
[...] It is meant to assess the reality that is unconsciously formed in direct replica of your thoughts and expectations.
You are afraid, and he is, unconsciously, that you will fall off the edges of the known universe, that the conscious mind won’t function out of the body, and that only chaos will meet you, and this is not the case. There are some differences here between what you consciously tell yourself and what you unconsciously are afraid of and what you unconsciously believe. [...]
[...] The freedom is yours now, as available to you as it is to me, and easier for you to use since you are more familiar with your own body than I am with Ruburt’s. You direct it outward unconsciously as you go about your daily endeavors so easily and so automatically that the miracle of it escapes you. [...]
[...] Yet unconsciously you may have tried out and discarded all of those, even though you have no memory of such experiences. [...]
Even as you speak your sentence with such fine conscious nonchalance, inner choices are still being made, as you unconsciously check your communications against events occurring outside you as you speak.
Jung’s collective unconscious was an attempt to give your world its psychological roots, but Jung1 could not perceive the clarity, organization, and deeper context in which that collective unconscious has its own existence. [...]
We learned the methods
so long ago
that they’re unconscious,
and we’ve hypnotized ourselves
into believing
that we’re the audience,
so I wonder where we served
our apprenticeship.
Under what master magicians did we learn
to form reality
so smoothly that we forgot to tell ourselves
the secret?
