“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

(We would like to insert a note here to Roger, to the effect that we would like him to go over the two sessions and give us a detailed written summary of the data given through Jane, in answer to the mathematical questions he sent Jane. [...] We want to insert the material into the record, there to take its place with all the other variety of material growing out of the sessions. Jane’s mathematical knowledge and vocabulary [and mine] is so limited that any valid [or invalid?] data obtained in trance by Jane, on this subject, is of interest to us; the more we learn about these two sessions, the easier it will be for us to interpret another facet of trance experience.

(This session proved to be a continuance of the last session. [...]

(This session was witnessed by Carl Watkins, of Odessa, New York. Carl studied math for two years in college; reading the first session, he said that the ideas presented by Jane in trance made sense to him; he cited some examples to us and worked out some figures, especially concerning quadrants, and drew some diagrams. [...] This sleepy effect was already more pronounced, I thought, than it had been at any time during the last session. [...] See page 153 of the last session, concerning the old-fashioned little man Jane had seen in image form. [...]

(Before the session Jane and I discussed the reaction of Roger Sullivan, of Lexington, Massachusetts, to the two sessions dealing with his mathematical questions. See sessions 449 & 450, and the attached correspondence, etc. We also talked about the California session involving Bill Macdonnel, auto accidents, etc., and other material—see the 435th session. [...] I said I thought it was a contact session, as Seth calls them, meaning that he was present with us at this time, rather than having given Jane the material earlier. See the 461st session.

(During break we discussed some of the aspects of precognition and telepathy, clairvoyance, etc., that would be called upon in cases where witnesses attended sessions, but the material for the session had been given to Jane by Seth in advance, in our terms.

[...] It is true that much of our work is done outside of session time. Session time often represents the end result of our work. [...]

This session is outside of our regular sessions because I have known that Roarck would finally be drawn here, and it is for his benefit that I have called the session. [...]

Since this is an unscheduled session I will not keep you, but I am extremely pleased, both because Mark finally made it to a session the other night, finally after knowing about the sessions for months, and also that Roarck has finally been drawn here. [...]

[...] It was the first session with more than one witness. Note, also, that at the close of the 46th session, Seth had remarked that he would “speak to you Monday if not before.”)

I am not going to hold a long session. This is merely in the lines of an introduction, and may I here welcome Roarck to the session. [...]

(After supper this evening Jane received from Seth [without subjectively hearing his voice] information that the session would contain material about “probability clusters.” [...] But not until Seth began discussing the subject did I realize that Jane had tuned in to it herself following last Wednesday night’s session. It appears at the end of that [711th] session as item No. [...]

A note added later: Of course, nowhere in the 712th session did Seth come right out and say that in class the night before Jane had tried to express her version of his “own true reality.” Strange it may be, but I didn’t catch this during the session, nor did either of us notice it for some time afterward. And for whatever reasons, with the exception of one rather oblique reference at the end of this (712th) session, Seth himself chose to discuss the whole class adventure from quite a detached viewpoint.

[...] His material is also an extension of much that he gave in the 679th session for Volume 1 of “Unknown” Reality, when he discussed the early background of the probable Jane who chose to live in this physical reality, and how that Jane began to contend with her strongly mystical nature. (4:32 p.m. I read the session to Jane while she had a smoke. [...] I told Jane that his promise of giving more material doesn’t usually work out — I’m aware of a number of such references he’s made in this series of sessions. [...] And I couldn’t see her doing that, especially if often she never even sees the typed session, but hears me read it to her. [...]

[...] Although her eyes looked better, she couldn’t make out faces on TV at times, and later couldn’t read yesterday’s session at all. [...]

[...] I read Jane yesterday’s session. [...]

(3:45, Carla took Jane’s temperature — 98.4. I read to Jane the session for February 17, concerning impediments in health versus her utter freedom in writing. [...]

(Jane commented here on something I’d also become aware of in recent sessions. For whatever reasons since holding the 709th session, she hasn’t had to wait for that certain, more “difficult” kind of trance to develop before launching into Seth’s book material; see the note at 10:55 for that session. [...] For other contrasting examples, in Volume 1 see the notes closing out sessions 688 and 703, as well as related material in Appendix 4, wherein I wrote about the translation challenges she’s often faced since beginning “Unknown” Reality: “— hence her talk before many of these sessions … about attaining that ‘certain clear focus,’ or ‘the one clearest place in consciousness,’ before she began speaking for Seth.”

[...] We were discussing the material Seth had given after 11:38 in the last [712th] session; he’d talked about some of the strains Jane had experienced while serving “the first portion of her apprenticeship” in the development of her psychic abilities. I’ve heard her say the same thing before, of course; see Note 13 for the 712th session. [...] When she began the sessions over 11 years ago, we requested advice and help from a few people,¹ but as we slowly began to understand the very personal nature of her gifts we realized that she’d have to find her own answers as she went along, with whatever help I could learn to offer.

[...] She described it to me — and tonight Seth followed that subject matter very closely in the first part of the session. I suggest the reader review the 711th session in connection with this evening’s data to 11:26.)

(And added a year later: Seth also discussed the will in a personal session that was held just six months after he’d finished dictating “Unknown” Reality in April 1975. As soon as Jane came through with the material, I thought of adding some of its more generalized portions to this session. [...]

1. It will be remembered that Seth first mentioned his concept of counterparts in the ESP class session for Tuesday evening, November 18, 1974, rather than in dictation for “Unknown” Reality; see the opening notes for Session 721. [...] Then see all of Seth’s material on counterparts in the 721st session itself.

4. See Seth’s very acute discussions of the soul (or entity) in sessions 526–28 for Chapter 6 of Seth Speaks. He came through with many excellent points. I’ve always been intrigued by the remark he made just before 10:43 in the 526th session: “You are one manifestation of your own soul.” Then in Chapter 9 of Personal Reality, see the 637th session at 10:20: “A group of cells forms an organ. [...]

(Neither Jane or I could remember what Monday evening’s session is all about — even though I’d read part of it from my “shorthand” notes to the members of ESP class last night. I still have to type the session.)

That material bothered Jane, as I wrote at the end of the session, since “she wasn’t taken with the idea of a group soul, say, or of sharing a soul.” For Seth’s resolution of this little dilemma, see Session 638 in the same chapter.

(10:20.) End of session and a fond good evening. [...]

It is as I have said before, and the session is to help you and Ruburt trust his own processes, since consciously he cannot know all of the body’s multitudinous happenings. [...]

[...] He should indeed read sessions from the last group, however—one or two daily. [...]

(Last night in ESP class Jane delivered a session that was long, forceful, dramatic, and humorous. [...] She also sang in Sumari, her trance language, after finishing with the session. Seth covered many interesting points, and [I can add later] Jane presents the entire session in slightly abbreviated form in Chapter 15 of Politics. [...]

(We discussed points 4 and 5 while waiting for the session to begin this evening. [...] So I hoped her material would crop up in some form in the session itself.)

[...] The other two were points 4 and 5, as listed in the notes preceding this session; since Jane became consciously aware of material on them just before the session began, she’d had no time in which to give it. [...]

1. In the 13th session for January 6, 1964, Seth told us: “I will at a later date try to discuss the question of time. [...] In Volume 1 of “Unknown” Reality see, for instance, his opening delivery for Session 688: “These CU’s (or units of consciousness) therefore can operate even within time, as you understand it, in ways that are most difficult to explain. [...]

[...] We can, when time permits, have a short session on him, as apart from the book. [...]

[...] Now that you are back with steady sessions once more, I need not use every session for dictation as long as I know my book is doing well. I thought you might perhaps miss the more easy give and take, if every session was dictation—though of course most sessions will be.

(The good news data refers to Seth’s prediction of same in the 520th session for March 25, 1970: “I believe there is also some good news for you that you do not expect.” I asked Jane for a comment about this before tonight’s session.

In last night’s session (for Jane’s ESP class) rather extraordinary amounts of energy were released here, to the benefit of all concerned. Psychic and spiritual peaks are experienced by those in the room during such sessions, and the subjective experience of the students can then be used by them as a reminder of moments of psychic understanding that they seldom achieve.

(This session, for Wednesday, May 6, 1970, is deleted from the record, since it is a personal one for Jane and me.)

5. Seth’s first use of “species of consciousness” came after 11:38 in the last session. And added later: He comes up with another evocative phrase, “civilizations of the psyche,” in the 715th session in Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality. Much of that session can be taken as an extension of his material here on the qualities of consciousness that have existed on the earth. In the 715th session, Seth also lets fall some rather humorous comments on Jane’s own mixed reactions when she first encountered such hints of the “multidimensionality of your beings.”

(On Wednesday, March 27, we received from Jane’s publisher the page proofs for Seth’s second book, The Nature of Personal Reality: A Seth Book.¹ No session was held that night. Actually, correcting the proofs — carefully scrutinizing well over 500 printed pages word by word, checking and rechecking notes, spelling, punctuation, and so forth — kept us so busy that we suspended the next eight scheduled sessions, covering a period of 26 days. Ordinarily Seth would have used those sessions to deliver work on “Unknown” Reality. [...]

[...] I wrote an account of the phenomenon while wondering if I’d distorted some quite ordinary dream happening — and while knowing at the same time that I hadn’t. I decided to ask Seth to discuss the two dreams when we went back to having sessions again, then forgot about them until I got around to rereading my first rough version of these notes last week. [When Seth discusses my “dreams” in this session, however, it turns out that from his perspective he’s able to be more accurate about labeling them than I was.]

(I read my two questions to Jane as we waited for tonight’s session to begin. [...] Actually, Jane had grown very relaxed since suppertime; so much so that she’d considered skipping the session. [...]

(Jane, the Gallaghers and I were discussing the session and related subjects when Seth came through again at 11:00. All of us were in very good humor, including Seth; the session as it continued reflected this, and a rapid-fire exchange resulted in which Jane was in and out of trance at the wink of an eye, so to speak. She manifested this same ability during the 169th session, held in Dr. Instream’s office in Oswego, NY, but I would say that her switching back and forth this evening was more rapid. [...]

(The session was held in our large front room. [...] Almost immediately her voice acquired a somewhat hard edge that cut through the traffic noise, and she maintained this through most of the session. [...]

[...] She said Seth might have mentioned it during Monday’s session had he not devoted the session to the material on my Aunt Ella.)

We will initiate a thorough study of the God concept, which will be begun the next time these friends are present, and will be continued when they visit us at other sessions. That is, whenever they attend a session for a while we will concern ourselves with the God concept and all of its implications.

(Actually, the session might better be called a Jane/Seth session, in that Jane’s own consciousness was often uppermost, riding upon Seth’s underlying and steadying influence. [...] As soon as I realized that she wanted to have a session I asked her to wait until I found my pen and notebook. Then Jane proceeded to come through with much evocative material on dreams—our second reason for excerpting the session for Mass Events. Some of the more generalized dream material is presented below; some of the more individualized portions [which, in fact, came at the start of the session] are given in Note 2.

(The last session we presented in Mass Events, the 841st, was held on March 14. [...] Jane has held four sessions since the 14th: two personal ones, and two [842-43] on matters other than book dictation.

[...] In fact, material on Three Mile Island developed in the session this afternoon—which is the main reason we decided to give these excerpts here.

NOTES FOR SESSION 844 (DELETED)

(I have difficulty believing it even when I write it—but eight months have passed since Jane held her last session for Dreams, the 928th, on November 12, 1980. [...] During this period Jane gave two regular nonbook sessions [on November 26, 1980, and on January 5, 1981], plus 48 private sessions, so we’ve been busy! Out of that private total, Seth devoted 25 sessions, either completely or in part, to her “sinful-self” material. Jane delivered the introductory session on that subject on March 11 of this year, and I’ll be quoting from it in a note. The next 24 sessions on the sinful-self material came through in a concentrated block from April 14 to July 13. I also plan to excerpt several of those sessions for notes, and to quote a number of times from Jane’s personal journals for 1980 and 1981. In other words, these opening notes for the 931st session are going to be long ones.

By July 8 we’d accumulated 61 fully private sessions since Jane had given the first session for this chapter of Dreams, the 919th, on June 9, 1980. [During that 13-month period we also held 10 regular nonbook sessions and one more book session.] As she began to study that mass of private material on the 8th, Jane abruptly laid it aside to spontaneously write a complete outline for a book on Seth’s magical approach to reality. She’d had many such impulses since giving the first session on that subject 11 months ago, and I’d been hoping she would try the venture. [...] He repeated his approval in our 63rd private session, held on July 13.

Jane’s connections and challenges with religion across lifetimes are obvious among her dream of being a nun, the “nightmarish experience”⁸ she had two nights later, and the subject matter of the private session she gave on the evening of March 11. In that session Seth used her nightmare as the basis for a discussion of her life as a nun, mentioned her grandfather, and began the “sinful-self” material I referred to at the beginning of the notes for this 931st session. His information on the sinful self opened up a very important development in Jane’s [and my own] search for an understanding of her symptoms, and I’m presenting excerpts from that session in Note 9. [Before long, I realized that I could use notes to carry portions of several more sessions on the sinful self.]

5. For that matter, I’ve often told my wife that it would be all right with me if she decided to give up the sessions entirely—for good—period. [...] More than once I’ve asked her if she keeps the sessions going just for me. Jane comes first with me—not the sessions, or anything else she might do. [...] Once again I recalled Seth’s statement in Chapter 5 of Dreams, in Volume 1. See Session 899 for February 6, 1980: “But the purpose of your life, and each life, is in its being (intently). That being may include certain actions, but the acts themselves are only important in that they spring out of the essence of your life, which simply by being is bound to fulfill its purposes.”

(I began working on mail after reading several of the sessions to her. [...] She said she’d try for a little session. [...] And once again she came through with a session almost before I was expecting it. [...]

(In regard to Seth’s remark, above, that our creative energies would be enhanced with the onset of these latest sessions, here’s the earlier reference he referred to, in the very first session for October 9, 1983: “Your joint creative abilities should also be more aroused because of this session, so that you will have more intuitive breakthroughs on your own, and jointly, that will benefit you both in many ways.” [...]

Our sessions have put you in a receptive state of mind, so that you were alert to the phenomenon with the paintings. I told you that as a result of the sessions both your and Ruburt’s creative energies would be enhanced, so to some extent that acceleration was responsible for what you “saw.” [...]

[...] It’s a great little session, I told Jane as I got ready to turn her on her side. I said that Seth’s first line, about her ultimately being able to walk, has been on my mind since these new sessions began, but that I’d hesitated to mention it. [...]

Now this will be a short session unless you have questions, but it will be a very important session if it is not simply filed and forgotten, but followed. [...]

[...] Attached is a transcript of the ESP class session held last evening, May 20, 1969, for Reverend Crosson and wife. Session typed by student WL.)

(Yesterday was ESP class night, so the Reverend attended class; a session was held during class, which was recorded; when received a copy will be added to these records. [...]

(Reverend Crosson took some copies of sessions with him. [...]

(This is our first session since December 15,1965. The rest was our longest since the sessions began two years ago, and did us both much good. We were ready to go back to work, although Jane confessed to some feeling of nervousness as session time approached. [...]

[...] It was furnished by Lorraine Shafer, who witnessed this session. Details will be presented in the body of the session, as they developed. The last session witnessed by Lorraine was the 195th, of October 4,1965. [...]

(Early in the sessions Seth began giving us lists of the inner senses and the basic laws of the inner universe. [...]

I did not know that you would tempt me with such a question at the end of a session; and you have no one but yourself to blame, if the session continues longer than you would have it.

[...] What follows is my reconstruction from memory, made immediately after the session ended. [...] Peggy and Bill did most of the talking during the session. They are reading the early sessions now, and so what developed was a rather condensed review of some of the main tenets of the material, for their benefit.

(Much of the session was a kind of review, as the 162nd session was, which the Gallaghers also witnessed, with Lorraine Shafer. [...] I believe a remark Bill made before the session began, about animals, led to this.

(No session was expected for tonight. [...] That didn’t develop into a session; Seth did’t speak. [...]

(Jane’s eyes opened perhaps ten minutes after she began to speak, and remained open for most of the session thereafter. [...] Twice in a frisky mood, the voice climbed very briefly in volume; both times this happened near the end of the session.

(Jane feels she could have had a session at about 3:30 PM, Saturday, after a rejection from Playboy arrived in the mail. [...] She thought of Seth’s statements in the 104th session, concerning a sale that “has developed,” and wondered just what the statement meant. [...]

(As session time approached Jane had no idea of the material for the session. [...]
