Paintings, and for Ruburt’s benefit poetry—I certainly don’t want Ruburt to feel neglected—but paintings have their own vitality and exist independently of the artist, and are the result of a spontaneous, free, impulsive burst of giving that asks no return, and as such, because no return is expected, returns are given.

Another small note here, but a rather important one: Ruburt has nothing to fear from his mother, now, or after her death.

The four in the beginning was merely my effort to lead Ruburt further, in counting as I did do later on, ending up with our correct six. [...]

[...] In other words, the sessions are a signal of a sort, activating certain portions of Ruburt’s being. [...]

Ruburt has become more aware of the body’s impetus toward action and motion. [...]

Now I may or may not return—again, according to those rhythms which Ruburt is now beginning to sense. [...]

You have literally turned over your emotional affiliation now to Ruburt, so you are in this respect free.
