(Louder and humorously:) I hope you enjoy the punctuation.

(Since break Seth had taken to calling out more periods, commas, and other such indicia than he usually does, so I included a few examples. He’s indicated this kind of punctuation throughout the book, but is usually more concerned about words to be underlined, or put in quotes or parentheses. See the notes following the 610th session in Chapter One.

(A note by RFB: Jane’s punctuation in her copies of Seth’s Gallagher materials varies at times from the originals—but only in small ways, and not at all in content.)

[...] Seth requested that I punctuate the sentence just that way. [...]

[...] In their own way the pauses served as additional punctuation and emphasis for some of Seth’s information.)

[...] When she takes many long pauses punctuation becomes more difficult, and as Seth she’s more apt to skip an occasional word, which complicates things. [...]

[...] The spelling and punctuation are always Jane’s own. [...]

We want to do away with the normal punctuation of your experience, for you put periods and question marks and dashes where they do not belong. [...]

(The page proofs for Jane’s The World View of Paul Cézanne arrived in the mail from her publisher this morning, and she’s been busy correcting them most of the day since — checking the type for errors in spelling, punctuation, omission, and so forth.)

[...] Then I’ll need another week to go over the manuscript, with colored pens marking instructions of each page as to what copy we want set in roman [upright] type, and in italics; while doing that I’ll also check spelling, punctuation, references, dates, times—all of those mundane details so necessary in helping our publisher produce a finished, good-looking book for the marketplace.¹

To some extent punctuation is sound that you do not hear, a pause that implies the presence of withheld sound. [...]
