Now. Mr. Fox is quite correct. When you know you are in a projection do not be tempted to tamper. There are forces that you do not yet understand. You will find that these projections become more vivid. I must repeat that these are quite valid. They are not hallucinations. Conscious projections do not occur with any frequency as far as a large percentage of humanity is concerned. Note that I speak only now of projections in which you are self-consciously aware.

Because of some matters we have not yet discussed, at any rate deeply, it is possible to meet your own projection. You are accountable for acts committed during projections, of course, and these alter the personality as any acts do. If you have your wits about you, you can gain information concerning the future by studying your projection environment, if for any reason you suppose it to be ahead of you in time.

Some of this is extremely complicated. You may for example request before sleep that you project into your own future, to see what occurs there. This is legitimate enough, if you are willing to accept the results of your projections. For what you see will influence what you do in the present. You will be projecting of course into the probable future as it exists for you at this point.

Clairvoyance usually involves projection to some extent. [...] Precognition requires projection, though here as with clairvoyance the projection itself may not be remembered.

Projections continue in the waking state, beneath it, as they continue beneath the dreaming state, you see. Now you have learned the methods at least that allow you to become aware of some projections that occur during the dream state. [...] There are methods that will allow you to catch yourself in the middle of projections embarked upon from the waking state. [...]

Our sessions involve projection, although the extent varies. The projection takes place on both Ruburt’s part and my own, and represents a psychic displacement of a kind.

I have told you that some portion of our sessions involves projection. [...] There will be a time when Ruburt will project out of his body during sessions and remember what transpires while I speak through his body. When projections occur now he is not consciously aware of them. [...] I will go into this perhaps soon, for there are the similarities here and significances, involving states of consciousness used by both Ruburt and myself, and the type of projection achieved. [...] Less satisfactory projections cause distortions, you see, that are characteristic features of this state of consciousness at that time.

If you call on me to help you in a dream projection, I will help you, though you may or may not remember the dream projection or my help. Joseph will find himself more likely to remember simple projections that do not involve any featured levitation. [...]

[...] Your projections do involve you in extensive levitations from the dream state, but you recall only a few. The most extensive traveling is done in nightly excursions, but it is easiest to remember those dream projections that occur during naps in the day, simply because the waking consciousness is more alert.

A kind of projection can occur, but never a full projection of this type. A fragment may project, you see, but one atom could not contain the full projecting consciousness of an adult human mind.

Projection can occur then in those terms or directions also. [...] The consciousness that ordinarily projects in an out-of-body experience could not practically project into one atom. [...]

Your physical personalities as you know them are projecting personalities from the whole inner self. But the projecting fragments themselves, you see, do not come and leave unaffected, but grow and mature and develop, really, other portions of the self in continuing extensions. There are no dead-end projections.

Now I am speaking not only of legitimate projections, but of projections vivid enough to be recalled and recorded. Projections in other words in which the ego can take at least some small part. Spontaneous projections of which you are not aware occur frequently.

Through the years a history of personal projections will serve to prove to you the nonphysical aspect of the self. You may even meet me (smile, eyes open wide) in some future projection. My meetings with you here involve to some extent projections on my part and on Ruburt’s part. As yet he is not consciously aware of these projections. [...]

Now this same chemical reaction must also occur, only more strongly, before a legitimate projection of the self from the physical organism can occur. This is one of the main reasons why such projections happen rarely. [...] This can trigger a projection.

[...] In spontaneous projections, you may become conscious in form one, project, return to the ordinary dream state and from there project again several times. You can expect these particular projections to be difficult to interpret now, though you may find the experience intact in the middle of any given dream record.

[...] Much to my amazement, their literature listed several books on projection. We ordered Oliver Fox’s Astral Projection. Astonished, I discovered that my experiences followed his rather closely, even though most of my projections to that date had been spontaneous. [...]

It may, however, be a valid projection. [...] It is possible for you to project yourself into one of your own future landscapes. This would not be an imaginative projection. [...]

I have been speaking of projection from the trance state. Projection from a dream is something else again, and when executed successfully, you have a fine example of the self as it changes the focus of awareness. [...] Spontaneous, unrecalled projections of this kind happen often. [...] Quite simply, such projections allow you practice in dealing with realities that you will meet when you no longer operate in the physical system.

An almost automatic determination must be established, however, if conscious projections are to be anything but rare oddities. [...] This energy results, also, in chemical excesses that can be utilized in projections, without drawing energy away from your other work.

Since this book is about the dream state, including dream projections, this is not the place to compare waking, trance and dream projections. I simply hope to show some of the types of projections possible from the dream state. The following experience was Carl Watkins’ first projection, January 6, 1969.

I’m going to devote this chapter to various kinds of dream projections from our own records and those of my students. I refer specifically to projections embarked upon from the dream state, rather than those in which a trance is induced. Deliberate waking projections will also be excluded.

For your own purposes, an unfinished painting on your easel would help you project to the studio, for you would wish to study it. [...] You could help each other retain proper consciousness and purpose during projection. If Ruburt is projecting, he should try to rouse you astrally.

[...] This will always occur when any kind of projection is experienced. Much of your intimate existence implies projections of various kinds. Thoughts are indeed small projections of yourself, sent outward.

The episode did involve projection, mainly through intensities. [...] Now in a different kind of projection, you could face for example the girl’s thought forms as a pseudophysical reality.

You have yet to experience a complete projection, but this will come. Your fear, Joseph, in the window dream projection, shows that you are proceeding with great caution here.

[...] Vast differences of magnetic vibrations are concerned here, and projecting it will be difficult for you to maintain the steadiness necessary to hold to the necessary vibrations to which others, inhabitants of the systems, will be more or less automatically attuned. [...] Each successive projection makes it easier for another such experience to occur.

[...] Some projection environments will not, of course, appear physical in your terms, and in your terms will therefore lack the suitable characteristics of reality.

[...] Legitimate projection environments are as real as the physical environment.

[...] Now this may, or may not, be a valid projection. There are ways to discover whether the projection is a pseudo one or a valid one. For one simple example, Ruburt experienced a valid projection begun from the dream state, some time ago.

[...] The form that you see will allow you to have some idea of your abilities in any given projection. You may begin a projection in one form, and then project from it to another form.

Such experiences as projection will therefore involve you in extremely vivid movement and sensation. You may to some extent, and you should, use your critical faculties when you are projecting. [...]

Projection from a dream state is something else again, therefore, and when it is executed successfully then you have a fine example of the self as it changes the focus of its own awareness. [...] Projections occur quite naturally under these conditions. For the development of the whole self however, and for the perfection of such experiences, it is beneficial that such projections be carried out by the conscious wish of the projector. [...]

[...] You have little control, and I am speaking here now all evening, of projections and their circumstances—you will have little control over the constructions of others. If, for example, during projection travel you encounter a disturbing image, you must first will it to disappear. [...]

[...] This is dependent upon the particular kind of projection involved. The molecular structure of the projecting self is of a different nature. [...]

[...] There, Ruburt was inside the image that he had projected. His main consciousness was merged with mine in the session format; while in the waking experience his consciousness was in the normal image, which sensed the projected one. In the first experience then Ruburt projected an image outward and his consciousness entered it, then he had a session by the same mechanics we always use. The unprojected portion of him listened. [...]

[...] Ruburt sat physically on the couch, yet at another level he did sit here (in the chair facing the couch), and in our relationship that was a fairly “sophisticated” kind of manipulation, involving the projection of a form outward—the double. [...] Those affairs involved the delivery of a session from the projected image to the physical one. [...]

[...] It was the feeling of such projection that was important, the subjective awareness of the inner and outer conditions. [...] This awareness of projection then represents an important element. [...]

(I felt as though I might project again, so I kept trying while Jane lay quietly beside me. [...] The projection, small as it was, had seemed so easy and natural that I wondered why it wasn’t a commonplace. [...]

[...] Ever since April 21 I have been waiting expectantly, and in vain, for another projection. On a different occasion I had a rather small out-of-body that trailed behind it, for almost two weeks, a series of incomplete projections or dream experiences containing distorted elements of such phenomena. [...]

Projections occur of course in the sleep state constantly, whether or not they are remembered. They are recalled when there is some reason to do so, some merit or obvious achievement involved, as in societies where it is considered highly advantageous to use dreams and projections.

I am fairly certain that I achieved excellent emotional contact with the students I addressed; for the projection was not only of Ruburt’s perceptive mechanisms, there was a strong psychic projection on my part.

(During that session Jane achieved outstanding voice effects, a very deep trance, and a projection to the Boston classroom of Pat’s special high-school class. [...]

(She particularly had some questions about the projection and voice.

[...] “Then I realize this is a false awakening, and that I should be able to project. [...] I try to levitate or project. [...] Then I really project. [...]

[...] You projected once into the past, and I was one of your friends. [...] One episode involved a small future projection, and was intermixed with ordinary dream elements. [...]

(The following dream and experience is taken from Jane’s notebook; it concerns her results obtained after she deliberately lay down from 8 to 9:30 AM, Monday, June 1, to attempt projection. [...]

[...] It may project to other areas entirely while Sue is somewhere else in her astral form. [...] The mother may even go out after the child in a projection and bring it home.

[...] Here is question one: “When I project my consciousness out of my body, is my astral body pregnant because I am now pregnant physically? [...]

(“Does it project when Sue does, for instance?”)

[...] In spontaneous projections you may become conscious in form number one, legitimately project, return to the ordinary dream state, and project again several times. You can expect therefore that these projections will be difficult to interpret, though you may find the experience intact in the middle of the record of any given dream.

The projections here are fairly short in duration, though exceptionally clear. [...] If you realize that you are projecting you may simply order any unpleasant subconscious phantoms to disappear, and they will do so.

[...] It is possible for you to project yourself into one of your own future landscapes. This would not be an imaginative projection. [...]

For your own purposes an unfinished painting on your easel would help you project to your studio, for you would psychically wish to return to study it. [...] Besides this the two of you travelling together could help each other retain proper consciousness and purpose during projection. If Ruburt knows he is projecting he should try to remember you, and to rouse you astrally. [...]

It is because of this instantaneous creation and projection of inner reality into form that you experience time within the physical system—to train you literally, to give you time to learn to handle your own creations. Projection experiments should only be adopted therefore when you are in a peaceful state of mind, as Ruburt should know after his creature experience.

Your own projection attempts can be achieved now in the dream state, for you can take advantage of the time that you do not have in waking existence. A few such deliberate experiments, suggested before sleep, will give you the confidence you need to carry through on a waking projection. [...]

[...] There are at least three different kinds of projections that you should experience in the dream state, that will facilitate waking experiences. You should give yourself projection suggestions now as a matter of course before sleep.

It will be highly advantageous now for him to renew projection attempts. [...]
