As far as I can tell, however, this latest episode was not a continuation of my three visions of last October, in which I saw the end of my life while I was an officer in the armed forces of Imperial Rome¹ — yet this time also I confronted circumstances surrounding my own death. (As Seth says, a remarkable and instant liking sprang up between F. Fell, Jane and me when we first met in his office. [...]

(I should add that at 2:30 I called to see if Andrew Fife was in his office at billing, since I wanted to show him the claim-denial reports I’d received from the insurance company the day before Christmas. [...]

(Today when I called his office, I found out that Andrew Fife was on vacation until January 3, so I’ll see him then. [...]

That did indeed refer to Pine City, and connected, you see, the office incident of your appointment with the car incident, which occurred in the vicinity of Pine City.

[...] Briefly through those eyes I looked out upon twin rows of galley slaves … I described the scene and my feelings about it to Jane, and made small, full-face and profile pen-and-ink drawings of myself as the officer. This afternoon, Monday, I decided upon a nap once again, and once again I was aware of myself as the Roman officer; at least I thought I was that individual. [...]

(Note: Strange to say, but at the same time I felt that Jane was more concerned about trying to make it into the doctor’s office—“Humiliating myself before all those people” —than she was about her symptoms themselves.

(I’ve picked up her new reading glasses at Jim Adams’s office, but she hasn’t been wearing them because they need adjusting. [...]

A few moments earlier he vaguely caught an image, as his mind, picking up inner information, translated it: he was being led to a physician’s office in the image. [...]

2. Early on the morning of June 17, 1972, five men were arrested inside the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, located in the Washington, D.C., apartment-hotel-office complex known as the Watergate. The men were employed by the “plumbers,” a secret group working for the Republican President Richard Nixon’s Committee to Re-Elect the President, and their tasks were to photograph records and to check upon listening devices — “bugs” — that had been planted in the offices during a first illegal entry in May.
