Primarily, such a consciousness knows itself, or tries to know itself, only in relationship to others or exterior conditions. [...] No consciousness is purely tuned into outside conditions only, of course. This type, however, is a cultivated specialization of consciousness in which its nature is known through the impact of exterior rather than interior conditions. Generally speaking, and only generally, it represents the consciousness familiar to many in your society—most likely, the majority.

The outside-attuned consciousness, however, is almost dependent upon exterior stimuli for its sense of life and enjoyment. I do not want to oversimplify, yet such a type of consciousness is far more interested in exploring the nature of itself as it relates to exterior conditions or circumstances. [...]

Because of the nature of your society, a large number of people cultivate what I will call an outside-attuned consciousness. [...]

[...] The polarities are artificial, but there is no doubt that in your society and times the exterior-tuned consciousness is the most paramount. [...]

In a way his progress has been dependent upon the state of his learning, so that he has been trying to stretch the abilities of normal consciousness by drawing in other “strands.” Yet because he was the one so involved, he had to test each strand, and in the meantime he still had his “old” consciousness, with its habits, to contend with.

[...] Obviously he is in the middle of a learning adventure, trying to do far more with his ordinary consciousness than most people, and trying to solve his problems and encounter his challenges without relying upon old structures of belief—healthwise not relying upon doctors or dentists. [...]

He needs the help now more than you, but I will sometime, when you want it, point out the ways in which your own accomplishments have been made in the face of the negative beliefs and aspects that at one time you accepted.

The material Ruburt is getting from the library will help him with his health, for it will automatically put him in touch with a strand of consciousness devoted to such issues. [...]

[...] Such beliefs clutter up your conscious mind with negative suggestions that can only frighten the exterior ego and impede the great strength and vitality that is your heritage from lending you the fullest possible strength and support.

New paragraph: Consciousness then is not dependent upon physical perception, though this attribute does require an awareness immersed within a material form. While physical consciousness is sifted through the bodily apparatus, you are usually unaware of noncorporeal kinds because of that process. [...] It may seem to you that you do not have any conscious control over your body’s condition in life as you know it, much less before your birth. [...]

Now it is here that the seeming division in the self occurs, for in physical life the conscious mind must be connected with the brain, and in terms of time that organ itself must grow and develop. So all of your consciousness cannot be physically aware. The portion that must “wait for” the brain’s development is the part you call in life “the conscious mind.”

[...] The interior workings of the body, to be conscious, would have to deal with time sequences that would present the physically attuned consciousness with “mathematical” deductions and calculations far too numerous for it to handle. For example, it would have to keep conscious track of all the muscles, nerves, organs, cells, molecules and atoms, while manipulating the body in space and time.

[...] While the condition of the body is directed by the conscious mind in life, then, the idea or mental pattern for the body existed before the conscious mind’s connection with the physical brain.

[...] What you do not know is that all consciousnesses dream. We have said that to some degree even atoms and molecules have consciousness, and each one of those minute consciousnesses forms its own dreams, even as on the other hand each one forms its own physical image. [...]

[...] On Friday, however, while in an altered state of consciousness, she tuned into some material on Seth, dreams, and other species of consciousness; she calls it The Wonderworks, and excerpts from it are presented as Appendix 11.

Because you have in the past convinced yourselves that the conscious mind must of necessity be cut off from inner reality, you think that it must be alienated from the dream state. Following such beliefs, you find yourselves thinking of dreaming as chaotic, unreasonable, and as completely divorced from normal conscious direction, purpose, or function. [...]

None of Ruburt’s characteristics are “negative,” bad, or dangerous. [...]

When you two make love in any manner, you are involved with a spontaneity and discipline, again, that literally cannot be consciously ascertained. [...]

Because of your age difference, Ruburt felt he had to catch up, and he became more conscious of clock time. [...]

[...] I guess the realization that the basic mistrust of one’s own nature could have such dire results was what triggered our conscious realization that we could do something about the whole business of symptoms, etc. [...]

Ruburt must make an attempt, and a good one, to express his feelings, positive and negative.

The body learned to maintain its stability, its strength and agility, to achieve a state of balance in complementary response to the weather and elements, to dream computations that the conscious mind alone could not hold. The body learned to heal itself in sleep in its dreams—and at certain levels in that state even now each portion of consciousness contributes to the health and stability of all other portions. [...]

[...] But in terms of your world the units of consciousness, acting both as forces and as psychological entities of massive power, planted the seeds of your world in a dimension of imaginative power that gave birth to physical form. In your terms those entities are your ancestors—and yet [they are] not yours alone, but the ancestors of all the consciousnesses that make up your world.

These ancient dreams were shared to some extent by each consciousness that was embarked upon the earthly venture, so that creatures and environment together formed great environmental realities. [...]

[...] And in an important fashion the coordination of the creature in its environment did not need to be as precise, since there was an elastic give-and-take of consciousness between the two.

[...] And then you will go consciously where your body cannot follow... [...]

[...] For when you harbor negative ideas and resentments, then indeed you set up a block and the block causes distortions. [...]

[...] You as an individualized consciousness are a part of this, and you cannot express yourself fully nor fulfill your purpose as an identity, as an individual, if you are not in good health... [...]

[...] Now various kinds of lacks can show up in many ways—in mental deficiencies—a man or a woman who has strong and definite mental deficiencies—who has strong negative habits—such a person has blocks in those areas. [...]

All portions of the self are indeed conscious, and they are also basically conscious of each other, though for working purposes they may seem to be separate or isolated.

[...] Jane and I soon noticed the negative suggestions her doctor had given her, as she talked with us. [...]

[...] You are not separated from the animals and the rest of existence by virtue of possessing an eternal inner consciousness. Such a consciousness is present within all living beings, and in all forms.

[...] Experience in one dimension in no way negates existence in another.

The official line does have its role, of course — but once again, by itself it must remain isolated from the deep, creative, healing functions of body consciousness. The official line of consciousness is really the “worrier,” because it recognizes that it can only go so far, and usually it is not educated enough to realize it is itself sustained and supported — and now I bid you a fond good afternoon, and I do indeed adjust those coordinates that do quicken Ruburt’s healing processes.

[...] That material, however, is “excellent medicine,” and can indeed be life-saving (intently). It is indeed unfortunate that those beliefs that show themselves so simply and effectively in nature seem so mysterious to the usual line of official consciousness.

(Slowly at 4:44.) Give us a moment … When I am “present,” this also places Ruburt within a different kind of framework in relation to himself, in which most negativity simply takes no hold. [...]

These in themselves however bring a feeling of abundance that will be translated physically as long as the initial negative belief is combated and reversed. [...]

[...] At times it does become invisible to him, so a part of experience that he does not consciously realize it as an idea about his reality, and not a statement of truth regarding his nature.

When he thinks he is consciously giving himself good advice, he if often speaking to himself with the voice of the usually unconscious belief. [...]

[...] His conscious resolution is activated, and this is very important. [...]

Over a period of time, then, certain portions of the body will habitually respond in any given overall positive or negative way. [...]

[...] The dream experiences reflect the assimilation of conscious and unconscious knowledge, and a new growing unity. [...]

[...] The world that you know is one of the infinite materializations taken by consciousness, and as such it is valid.

(9:35.) Now this particular level of consciousness, occurring in the sleep state, has not been pinpointed by your scientists. [...]

[...] The soul, in other words, has created a world for you to inhabit, to change — a complete sphere of activity in which new developments and indeed new forms of consciousness can emerge.
