Specific inoculations are given under various conditions. They are bound to affect the biological system. The people who take such inoculations within your own culture, now, usually do so because they do not want the disease specified, and they believe that the inoculation will prevent it. It is impossible to tell ahead of time how many of those individuals would come down with the disease otherwise, yet diseases do come and go whether or not inoculations are given. The mechanisms operate in such a fashion that by now overall belief has come to such a point that the same results would almost be effected if an inoculation of no particular value were given instead. The mind is as effective against viruses as anything else—and in such hypothetical cases immune reactions would be set up biologically, through the mind’s beliefs.

You number viruses as people number demons. The cause of epidemics, say, is as I have given it in the early chapters of Mass Reality. It is considered to some extent superstitious to beware of preventative inoculations. And yet the body knows that all-in-all, ideally, it does not make sense to inflict even a minute infection or illness upon the body, to introduce foreign elements that have not naturally been accepted by the body in its own context. Therefore often such preventative inoculations—by inoculations I mean here any method of enforced introduction of disease—these methods often bring about other effects of an unfortunate nature.

You would not have had difficulty without the inoculation. At the time you did suffer a state of shock initially, but the body could handle that. You need general inoculations now, in the society at large, with children’s diseases and so forth, because the belief in the inoculations is so strong.

[...] In the meantime, however, scientists and medical men find more and more viruses against which the population “must” be inoculated. [...] There is a rush to develop a new inoculation against the newest virus. [...] Then as a preventative measure the populace is invited to the new inoculation.

(Emphatically:) Many people who would not get the disease in any case are then religiously inoculated with it. The body is exerted to use its immune system to the utmost, and sometimes, according to the inoculation, overextended [under such] conditions.⁴ Those individuals who have psychologically decided upon death will die in any case, of that disease or another, or of the side effects of the inoculation.

4. I’m especially interested in Seth’s material on inoculations, since on two separate occasions I underwent severe physical reactions after receiving them. Jane has also had some unfavorable experiences with inoculations.

There are individuals who very rarely get ill whether or not they are inoculated, and who are not sensitive in the health area. I am not implying, therefore, that all people react negatively to inoculations. In the most basic of terms, however, inoculations do no good, either, though I am aware that medical history would seem to contradict me.

[...] Such inoculations, therefore, cannot take that into consideration. There are also cases where alterations occur after inoculation, so that for a while people actually become carriers of diseases, and can infect others.

The official mentioned, by the way, that there was indeed no direct evidence connecting past flu shots with the occurrence of a rather bizarre disease that some of those inoculated with the flu vaccine happened to come down with.⁴ All in all, it was quite an interesting announcement, with implications that straddle biology, religion, and economics. In Note 4 for Session 801, I quoted material Seth gave on inoculations in Session 703 for Volume 1 of “Unknown” Reality. [...] After 10:16: “You can point to diseases stamped out because of inoculations or other preventative measures…. [...]

Still, Jane and I do have our cats inoculated against feline distemper and respiratory viruses; pets acquired at humane societies (as ours often are) have already shared an infected environment. [...] Jane and I strongly recommend that parents thoroughly investigate and understand the pros and cons involved with each inoculation their children will receive.)

(Pause at 10:42.) Give us a moment… In your society scientific medical beliefs operate, and a kind of preventative medicine, mentioned earlier, in which procedures [of inoculation] are taken, bringing about in healthy individuals a minute disease condition that then gives immunity against a more massive visitation. [...]

[...] The monkey was not free, but on a leash —the psyche’s interpretation, in other terms, of material involving the class discussion about inoculations. The monkey was not free because it had been inoculated with diseased tissue, yet the doctor hoped to keep the disease in control, or leashed, through measured inoculations. [...]

[...] Chicken pox, measles, and other like diseases in childhood in their own way “naturally inoculate” the body, so that it is able to handle other elements that are a part of the body and the body’s environment.

When civilized children are medically inoculated against such diseases, however, they usually do not show the same symptoms, and to an important extent the natural protective processes are impeded. [...]

(I told Jane that Seth’s material on childhood inoculations leading to later diseases might be vulnerable to statistics. [...]

(For Seth tonight she had questions about inoculations of humans and animals. If we create our reality, how come an inoculation will work, even if we don’t want it, or don’t believe in it? [...] And why would an animal respond to an inoculation when it could know nothing about our belief systems, etc? [...]

[...] It seems quite scientific to believe in inoculations against such dangerous diseases — and certainly, scientifically, inoculations seem to work: People in your time right now are not plagued by smallpox, for example. [...]

[...] Many of your scientific procedures, including inoculations, of themselves “cause” new diseases. It does not help a patient inoculated against smallpox and polio if [eventually] he dies of cancer as a result of his negative beliefs.⁴

[...] You get in trouble only when you identify too strongly with the socially inoculated man, so that you can say “With my beliefs, I do not think I can learn to put Prentice in Framework 2.” (See my closing notes for the last deleted session.) The “my” there, in that sentence, refers to the socially inoculated man. [...]

I want you both to remember that you are learning a new kind of orientation, and ideas directly opposed to those with which you were “inoculated”—so do not blame yourselves for inadequacies. [...]

[...] There are no inoculations against beliefs, so when young people with such beliefs grow old they become “victims.”²

The beliefs people acquire when young can be changed, of course, and according to Seth (and the ideas Jane and I have also) this process of change would be the best “inoculation” there is against senility. [...]

[...] The chapter deals with the negative effects and aspects of inoculations, and certainly reinforces Seth’s own material in Mass Events on the harmful effects of many inoculations. [...]

[...] Your cat should be inoculated. There is no great danger here, but since you know he is not inoculated, it should be done. [...]

[...] You have a natural immunity against all thoughts that do not fit in with your own purposes and beliefs, and naturally (pause, groping), you are “inoculated” with a wholesome trust and belief in your own thoughts above others. [...]

In a way, some disease states help to insure the survival of the species — not by weeding out the sickly but by introducing into large numbers of individuals the conditions needed to stabilize other strains within the species that need to be checked, or to “naturally inoculate” the species against a sensed greater danger.
