“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

1. For Seth on the fetus — its astral and reincarnational attributes, its energy, its growth, its perceptions from inside the womb — see the quotations from sessions 503–4 in the Appendix for The Seth Material. Those sessions were held in September 1969.

One might say that Seth continued his own tree data almost five years later, in the 453rd session for December 4, 1968. Jane presented that rather brief session in full in the Appendix for The Seth Material, but from it I’d like to quote these lines:

3. In the 684th session for Volume 1, Seth came through with one of my favorite statements (even if it is grammatically incorrect): “The cells precognate.” Much of his material in that session applies here: “It is truer to say that heredity operates from the future backward into the past….”

4. I suggest reviewing Seth’s excellent material on probabilities, cellular consciousness, the moment point, and related concepts in the 681st session for Volume 1.

9. At once Seth’s material reminded me of a novel about dolphins that Jane worked on in 1963. [...] We hadn’t realized it at the time, of course, but it embodied some of the ideas Seth was to enlarge upon in his own material. Jane had time to show her manuscript to one publisher — who rejected it — before the Seth material got under way. [...]

And added later: Also in that session, Seth describes how he must “disentangle concepts” from their patterns in order to relate them through Jane. His material on this will be given in an appendix for Session 711, in Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality. In that appendix I assemble from various sessions information on the complex relationships involving Jane-Ruburt-Seth (and also Rob-Joseph).

7. Just a week ago, in the 686th session, I asked Seth to comment on our ancient origins, but without getting an answer. [...] Now we plan to ask Seth to develop his man-animal material soon, adding more specifics and including the probabilities involved.

3. This little note fits in here for two reasons: Jane’s pause, and Seth’s discussion of our kind of time. Here’s what I wrote at 9:55 in the 24th session for February 10, 1964: “Jane reports that when she pauses for Seth during a delivery, she can sense the whole concept of the subject being discussed. Subjectively, it appears to ‘hang over her.’ Since on those occasions it’s too much to handle at once, however, she feels Seth withdrawing it, to release it to her a little at a time in the form of connected words.”

[...] Mr. Fell also asked to see the manuscript on the Seth material,and told Jane some of the plans he had for publicizing her ESP book, due to be published this May. [...] Summing up, the publisher told Jane that once the ESP book is on the market and her name begins to be known through publicity, it will help the sales of future books considerably—namely the Seth material.

(For the record: In the 227th and 228th sessions Seth discussed the book of poetry Jane produced so quickly by using suggestions for abundant energy, and told us the book would be published. Jane had also finished the first third of her book on the Seth material itself, and felt it ready to send out.

(Seth began talking about pulsations in the very early sessions, the 12th among others. He added more material on such frequencies along with the data on the inner senses, by the 50th session; then elaborated further in the material on the electrical universe, given in the sessions from 122 on. [...]

[...] The tape, the poetry book, and the Seth material will be mailed Thursday. [...]

(More inner-sense delineations are to come, according to Seth. With a list of the above categories in mind however, it is clear which senses and laws apply to the material in the sessions following, up until now. I have often meant to remind Seth to mention the specific senses along with the material under discussion but have not done so.

(Jane said the key point here is that although she had these images of her own, she did not give voice to them as part of Seth’s data; she was able to appreciate the difference. She said it is difficult for her to learn to use herself to the proper degree in interpreting Seth’s material, without interfering with it.

[...] Having finished one project, the ESP book, she was beginning a new venture, the book on the Seth material itself. [...]

(While she was giving Seth’s data, Jane said she had images of a childhood playground in Saratoga Springs, NY, with houses nearby, but recognized this as her own data and did not give it as Seth’s. She felt sure the test object had a northern, as versus a southern, background, but did not say so because Seth did not say so.

(Although Seth said to forget about notes, I found myself making a few after a few minutes, out of habit. [...] Seth talked at a normal rate, and neither Peggy nor I made a serious effort to get it all down. Some of the material was a repeat, in a more informal way, of what Seth had said during the session itself. During this exchange it was obvious that Seth was enjoying himself immensely. More than once he referred to Bill Gallagher as his favorite Jesuit, and this is getting to be something of a standing joke between Bill and Seth.

(Seth said again that he considered such effects childish, but that it would be a small sacrifice to make if it helped to get the material across. [...] He repeated again that he could not play on Dr. Instream’s desire for immortality in order to arouse his interest in the material.

(The Seth endeavor is well worth our while. Seth said he would arrange things so that I spent no more time writing up the material than I do now. [...]

[...] It involved an informal exchange between Jane, Seth, Bill and Peggy Gallagher and myself, and lasted until about 1:30 AM. [...] Seth also stated he did not care particularly to have it on tape, or have notes taken. During this exchange Seth was in an excellent good humor. [...] And when it was over at last, and we were all weary, Seth, or Jane, was as capable as ever. [...] Seth said he could continue until dawn, and I believe it quite possible. [...]

But that simple statement also means that our dream work relative to Jane’s challenges has often been powerfully abetted by Seth in many of the 347 completely private and 159 partially private sessions he’s given us since November 1965. Much of the fascinating and informative material in which Seth discussed various aspects of Jane’s symptoms is generalized enough for publication, and could help others, but because of its very intense personal connotations it’s a project we haven’t started yet. (Not that I haven’t presented excerpts from a few of those sessions in other Seth books.)

Even if those sessions can’t be quoted in these essays because of the obvious space limitations, I can note that Jane and Seth each continued to develop the themes already laid down in the sessions that have been presented. What they really signify for the long term is (as I wrote in the essay for April 16) a continuing program of intense study for Jane and me—and yes, for Seth, too—as we seek to better understand our chosen commitments in our present physical lives. [...] The material in the sessions is exhilarating, painful, enlightening, perceptive, frustrating, and maddening by turn—and sometimes, it seems, all of those things at once. [...] The anger I’d felt at Jane and myself when she began recording her sinful-self material (see the essay for April 16) has long since dissipated. [...]

Of course these essays reflect our particular chosen stances in life, both with and without the Seth material. I know that to some we’re sure to have appeared slow in putting to use much of the material, but in a most basic respect we’re way ahead in the situation: If we hadn’t almost instantaneously begun to encourage the flow of information from Seth when Jane started to express it some 18 years ago, and to write it down, then it wouldn’t even exist—at least in its present form. [...]

[...] Since I can no longer work for hours at a time on the Seth books, or with the Seth material, I’m training myself to “put out” copy in concentrated bursts of energy that are usually of an hour’s duration, say. [...]

[...] Then today I opened a package that contained a book of trance material similar to Seth’s. I guess I’m supposed to say thanks and that it’s great, to the publisher and the medium. Actually, I think those two people removed their material — which talks about All That Is — too far from its human source, its everyday contact with human personality, and thus produced just another psychic book. [...]

[...] Valid enough, perhaps, but lacking original insight and individuality like the Seth material has.

(“Thank you, Seth,” I said at 4:32 p.m. His advice was as excellent as always. [...] I told Jane I thought the question had been triggered by the session material today, especially that concerning Leonard.)

(“Good afternoon, Seth.”

1. See both The Seth Material and Seth Speaks. We’ve also accumulated considerable unpublished material on the subject.

(And yet, as if to puzzle us further, Seth did talk about dream material that Jane had obtained just last night. [...]

[...] As far as she knew the material hadn’t come from Seth, Jane said, but in retrospect it seems obvious that it had been in preparation for Chapter Twenty.

(Seth was all ready to go, Jane added now as we discussed her dream material, so the session resumed at 12:03.)

[...] Seth has yet to explain what he means by “preparing” our new house for us. During break we tried to give the Pipers a brief resume of what the Seth material involves. [...]

(Before the session, Jane had remarked that she wished Seth could, or would, let her know whether witnesses were coming. If she is able to let Seth so inform her in advance, it would be very convenient, to say the least.)

The material should be read from the beginning, with the exception of personal material which has been delivered this evening. [...]

I will now close the session, somewhat early by a few moments or so, and again I would suggest that your visitors read as much material as possible. They are of course welcome to any session, but a familiarity with the material will add to the benefit that can be received by witnessing a live session; and indeed, I can be a lively one. [...]

Jane and I placed no particular emphasis upon this information when Seth came through with it, but in retrospect we realized that it contains two significant points: Seth’s reference to “another book,” which we think is “Unknown” Reality, and his use of the word “counterparts.” In its ordinary dictionary sense, the term has appeared a few times in the sessions, but Seth’s use of it in the passage quoted above has a special implication, I think; one that Jane and I missed at the time of its reception. For in Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality, Seth’s concept of counterparts certainly takes on its own unique meaning within his study of personhood. (Although not bringing up his ideas of reincarnation or points of power in the 683rd session, Seth implied both of those qualities in many parts of that material.)

2. In connection with Seth’s discussion of animals and men here, see his excellent material in Chapter 12 of Personal Reality. Summarizing parts of that chapter very simply: In Session 647 Seth goes into the challenges early man faced as he contended with his own burgeoning consciousness. [...]

As I write this note, I’m struck by a curious connection I feel but find almost impossible to explain in words, let alone simply — that while Seth’s mention of “another book” in Session 657 may refer to “Unknown” Reality, it’s also echoed in the first question I asked Jane at break in tonight’s session. [...] Such odd connections have arisen before in the Seth material. [...]

(In Note 6 for the last session I wrote quite easily that Jane and I felt “no physical or emotional threat” as we considered the vastness of the inner universe described by Seth. [...] She also questioned the emotional value of the material on probabilities. [...]

(Seth’s reference to “illustrated Seth material” stems from ideas I’ve mentioned to Jane recently. [...]

There is no doubt Ruburt has made a breakthrough—and so have you, in terms of your ideas—for what I call illustrated Seth material. [...]

[...] Seth said that when the body began to recover, it would be an overall development. [...]

(Jane didn’t know whether she wanted a session tonight or not, but I suggested she have at least a short one, so Seth could say something about her moving ability.)

While Seth was producing this book, my own life was immeasurably enriched in unforeseen ways. Frequent psychedelic-type experiences paralleled Seth’s dictated material, and my own creative and psychic abilities developed into some entirely new areas.

The Sumari development constantly expanded as Seth produced this book. [...] In yet another state of consciousness, material is received that is supposed to represent remnants of ancient Speaker manuscripts. (These are also translated later.) Seth defines the Speakers as teachers, both physical and nonphysical, who constantly interpret and communicate inner knowledge through the ages. [...]

To me, the Seth Material is no longer a continuing manuscript of fascinating theories to be carefully judged against reality. [...]

Seth often uses episodes from our lives as specific examples of larger issues, and our experiences with the flood served as a starting point for his discussion of personal beliefs and disasters. In several other instances he also used our life situation as his source material — an intriguing turnabout.

(10:31 P.M. Seth’s last remark, which I took to be rather humorous, reflected one of the reasons for Jane’s upset before the session: the conflict she feels between having just book sessions versus obtaining Seth material on at least a few of the other subjects we always have in mind. [...] Seth has given some answers in a couple of sessions, and we want more. Originally I’d planned to present excerpts here from our joint material—but I see now that I have no space in which to do so.

1. Seth’s earliest material on EE (electromagnetic energy) units came through in September and October of 1967; in the Appendix of The Seth Material, see the excerpts Jane presented from sessions 504 through 506. Then in Chapter 20 of Seth Speaks, see Session 581 for April 14, 1971.

[...] Her manner was both funny and understandably sharp when I asked her if she had any questions for Seth tonight. [...]

(“Good evening, Seth.”)

(Seth’s reference to her material on plants concerned some short humorous essays she’d started writing for her own amusement a couple of days ago, in response to some new ideas. [...] If nothing else, she said now, the ideas could find their way into Seth’s material — or else they’d originated in Seth material that was innate within her to start with.)

(Jane had said before the 846th session, which she held a week ago, that she wanted Seth “to get back to” book dictation, and Seth had obligingly given the heading for Chapter 7 at the end of the session. Yet in Monday night’s deleted 847th session that “energy personality essence,” as he calls himself, digressed once again from work on Mass Events to give us more excellent material on plant and animal consciousness. He also discussed such divergent topics as the wide variety of responses that his material generates in correspondents — and not all of those reactions are so favorable, I might add.

[...] On Friday, April 6, we received from the production department at Prentice-Hall the printer’s page proofs of the index for Seth’s Psyche, and on Saturday morning the proofs for Emir arrived from Eleanor Friede at Delacorte Press. [...]

(“Good evening, Seth.”)

(Jane said that she felt the material was a burden at this point. [...] She hadn’t really thought Seth would say that her dream and psychological time data were correct; she didn’t think, moreover, that Seth would ever come out with such material, no matter whose death was involved.

[...] If it is found it will be filed with other data pertinent to the Seth material.

[...] John could offer us no confirmation on Seth’s data concerning John’s home office in Chicago. [...] John recalls no one fitting the rather general description given by Seth.

(Seth also stated at that time that John will have to take strong measures if he wants to achieve certain goals. [...]

(Another question asked before the session: Seth’s own definition of electrical reality, in connection with the book on the Seth material Jane is now writing.)

The material I am giving you now is an offshoot from the material on time that you requested, that will shortly return to that subject, and the electrical-reality material will follow in there naturally.

[...] Shortly before nine she reported glimmerings from Seth.

(Her pace as Seth was slower than Monday’s, but still a good one. [...]

(During break we quickly looked through the early sessions to see if we could establish the year of Seth’s birth. [...] Jane and I asked many questions about this kind of material in the beginning sessions, but as the material began to unfold such questions were pushed aside. Seth has said at various times during the year that we can bring such information up to date, but it seems that we do not get around to it. [...]

[...] Note that the date of Seth’s birth, given as 1486, is probably wrong. [...] From material given in various sessions we think the date of Seth’s death, given as 1655, is more likely to be correct. If Seth had been born in 1586 he would have been 69 at his death in 1655. [...]

[...] I have notes on the proceedings, and will include them in the record should Seth ever discuss them at some point in the future. Seth was not involved in Tuesday evening’s activities in any way.

(Lorraine was not consciously aware of the questions she has evidently been considering, according to Seth, although she said she is aware of the ideas she has about the Seth material.

(It is of interest here to note that in the 134th session Seth also announced that I had painted a likeness of him. [...] I have not asked Seth about the discrepancy yet of course, but Jane feels they both represent different facets of the Seth entity or personality.)

I am taking the opportunity to speak concerning these matters, since I had already decided not to cover any complicated material for our session. [...] Our material in general however can now expand; and indeed, though not always, some extra dimensions and perspectives may be added to our sessions.

[...] Seth/ Jane was highly amused while delivering the above paragraph. Strangely, as far as I recall no one had ever mentioned the possibility of Seth laughing, myself included.)

[...] There was something new here, though, I thought, when one postulated that Seth as we knew him was acceptable because of the symptoms. [...] Strange, I thought, if it turned out that personal work would be one of the most creative of all the uses to which the Seth material could be put, rather than grandiose pronouncements coming down from on high, dispensed by one who was in a position of superiority.

(Jane said she thought Seth might discuss our discussion, as well as the three other questions I’d mentioned about her feet, and so forth. I also had questions about some of my recent dreams, including the one of July 7 that Seth had promised to comment upon, but I had little hope that he’d get into that material tonight. [...]

[...] I was encouraged that Seth too found something to talk about in my insight of just before the session. Later, I supposed that Jane’s recovery—even if only to a degree—could also be taken as a sign of the legitimacy of the Seth material, since she’d be using it to see her way clear to bring about that recovery. [...]

(“So you’re in trouble,” I said, “because that situation makes the Seth material legitimate. [...]

Seth tells us, of course, that prehuman communication and human language and speech have originated in rhythmic patterns again and again, since in the far past our planet has seen the development of a number of presently unknown civilizations. See, for example, his material on reincarnational civilizations and the Lumanians in Chapter 15 of Seth Speaks. In Volume 1 of “Unknown” Reality, see his discussion on ancient man in the 702nd session, as well as Jane’s own material on the “innumerable species of man-in-the-making” in Appendix 6.

2. In Chapter 5 of Personal Reality, sessions 623–25 all contain Seth material on inner sound, light, and electromagnetic structures of the body that ordinarily we do not perceive. [...]

4. This material reminds me of Seth in the 681st session in Volume 1: “The deeper explanations, however [in this case of probabilities], demand a further expansion of ideas of consciousness … It is not so much a matter of Ruburt’s vocabulary, incidentally, since even a specialized scientific one would only present these ideas in its own distorted fashion. [...]

Certain presentations in Appendix 18 contain information from Seth about the distortive effects caused by words as he communicates through Jane. Review his excerpts from the 27th session for February 1964: “It is difficult for me to have to string out this material in words….”
