(Long pause.) Animals massage each other, and also use touch healing, and these activities represent the natural characteristics available in the “animal family,” as well as occurring naturally in the family of man. [...]

[...] You have both made some rather important connections lately (long pause), that can only serve to remind you of an important point: Ruburt’s “symptoms” should not be regarded as one black blot of a certainly reprehensible quality, sometimes seen in a quite hopeless light, but as a combination or result of quite changeable, quite moveable, quite separate characteristics that can also be dealt with separately, moved around and so forth, relieved or dissolved. This is a given characteristic of life, regardless of the beliefs that may lead you to misinterpret the actions of nature, casting some of its creatures in a reprehensible light.

[...] It is true that in the dream state and in some other levels of existence close to your own, there is strong individual play in the creation of images, and a magnificent use of symbolism, but all of this takes place, again, in an “objective” definite environment, an environment whose characteristics make such phenomena possible — a field of activity, then, with its own rules. There may be physical circumstances involving birth defects that are beyond alteration, where experience must be focused along other than usual pathways, yet even here those talents and characteristics that are available will open up vistas of experience and achievement.

[...] When one set of rigid beliefs threatens to make action appear meaningless, then another set of buried, repressed beliefs may surface, providing new impetus precisely when it is needed — but also forming a secondary personality with characteristics almost opposite to those of the primary self.

There is no correlation between the families of consciousness and bodily characteristics, however. [...]

[...] I can write that many of the characteristics Seth mentioned this evening apply to us, as we’ve learned over the years — especially those concerning our love of art, our being initiators, and our desires to be free of social structures. [...]

Such actions naturally possess all the characteristics of action in general, and therefore will seek other methods of materialization and expression. [...] The whole personality at any given time, because of its own nature and characteristics, has only a given amount of energy available to it in practical terms, though ideally speaking its energy is not limited.

We are also helped here by several characteristics of the personality, in that it is forever changing, and its flexibility will be of benefit. [...]

Both portions of this world mind, or world brain, therefore, operate in exaggerated fashions, so that their own characteristics are almost caricatured, untempered as it were by other portions, as if perhaps in an individual the left and right portions of the brain were artificially functionally separated. The portions of the self kept in protective custody develop certain characteristics just to get by—modes of behavior that perhaps serve to take off some of the pressure, while ever seeking ways to escape the situation. [...]
