(I began this short appendix a couple of weeks after the 732nd session was held, but didn’t finish certain parts of it until some time later. Seth’s naming a good number of class members as counterparts came as no great surprise to Jane and me — but it did make us more than a little suspicious at first. [...] Yet I felt no strong surge of emotion, for instance, to learn that Norma Pryor [whom I’ve met but a few times], Peter Smith, and Jack Pierce are counterparts of mine — nor did they when I read Seth’s material to them during ESP class six nights later. [...]

(Our suspicions entered in, however, when Jane and I realized that between us [and including each other] we were personally acquainted with nine counterparts: All but one of them [Alan Koch] were class members. [...]

[...] Carl Jones knows Bill Herriman and Bill Granger well — but Bill Herriman and Bill Granger have never met; all three are obviously males; all bear a general physical resemblance; all fall within a certain rather broad age bracket. [...]

[...] She’s from out of town, and I hardly know her [she’s also so quiet]; but even so, I could see how it was possible that she could be embarked upon her own series of lifetime challenges while expressing certain qualities of the entity, or whole self from, which we both emerged. [...]

[...] It was very brief but very clear. I’d known she had something to tell me after lunch, but hadn’t expected this. [...]

[...] She ate some lunch yesterday, but little supper. [...]

[...] There is a difference between feeling a certain way, and knowing the feeling is true — that is, it is true you feel, perhaps, that A is B, but you can be completely wrong in your interpretation. [...]

[...] I wish I could yell and scream, but I can’t …” I read her the session. [...]

[...] But Jane couldn’t really define any sources behind last night’s material, beyond calling them “consciousnesses, or beings — but maybe not personalities as we think of that term.” [...]

[...] Jane has only the sketchiest of scientific backgrounds, but a very strong intuitive grasp of the qualities involved. [...] However, she thinks that if she were to motivate herself she could accomplish something through the formalized language of mathematics, say, but that in the beginning at least she’d acquire the information visually; then she would write it down, even while the session was in progress….

[...] The excerpts show not only something of Seth’s connections on the “other side” of Jane, but in one case her violent reactions of surprise and panic when she attempted to translate something of Seth Two’s reality in terms of our own camouflage world: She found herself deeply involved in an unexpected experience with “massiveness” — one of the subjects I want to refer to in these preliminary notes. [...]

(I’ve already cited Jane’s experience, as given in Chapter 17 of The Seth Material, showing that on rare occasions Seth Two and her feelings of massiveness can go together; but she can also be in an altered, massive state of consciousness without having a session, or she can be speaking for Seth. [...]

[...] In evolutionary theory, such attributes violate not only the operation of chance mutation and the struggle for existence, but our ideas of consecutive time [which is associated with “naïve realism” — the belief that things are really as we perceive them to be]. [...] In atomic physics, for example, no special meaning or place is given to any particular moment, and fundamentally the past and future all but merge in the interactions of elementary particles — thus at least approaching Seth’s simultaneous time.¹⁰ At that level there’s change, or value fulfillment, but no evolution. [...]

If the dream world, the mind, and the inner universe do exist, but not in space, and if they do not exist basically in time, though they may be glimpsed through time, then your question will be: In what medium or in what manner do they exist, and without time, how can they be said to exist in duration? [...] It exists in time, but the mind takes up no space and does not have its basic existence in time. [...]

[...] So far I have given you but one, which is value fulfillment. [...] The species of mankind, and all other species in your universe on your particular horizontal plane, follow this law [value fulfillment] under the auspices of evolution (my emphasis).⁵ In other camouflage realities, this law is carried through in different manners, but it is never ignored.

(To a student:) Now last week, when Ruburt [Jane] was speaking about the natives who are such expert dreamers, you asked: “But why are they not more progressive?” Yet I know you realize that your own progress as a civilization will, in your terms, come to a halt unless you advance in other directions. [...] Using an analogy, neither does consciousness exist as simple organisms separated by vast distances, but as a complicated gestalt.

Science might admit that the novel idea itself was highly creative, an example of the mind at play as it used experience as a creative raw product — but of course you had your experience before you read the article. And when that kind of thing happens science then proclaims that the two events are not connected to each other at all, but are instead the result of coincidental patterns.

[...] As I went through a double revolving door I caught a glimpse of a young man, say in his mid-twenties, who was an exact duplicate of my own son, who I knew was not in the mall, but was away on business of some kind. [...] Either I followed him to his car, then talked to him, or followed him to where he lived with his parents — but he bore an uncanny resemblance to my own son.

[...] I’d forgotten to describe my idea for a novel to Jane, but the article immediately reminded me to do so. [...] (A fourth brother had died at birth.) Their unknowing would match my own dreamlike idea of the two young men living in the Elmira area but not knowing of each other. [...]

[...] But when I said I’d return to typing Monday night’s session, in a rather humorous turnabout she decided to hold a session tonight after all. [...]

The pyramids exist as other than physical matter, but it is only as physical matter that you perceive them. [...] Some of these would automatically open up many doors, leading to as yet undiscovered secrets—but only for those who understood the use of sound.

[...] This isn’t terribly strong, but I have the feeling of a barrier over there,”and again Jane gestured to her left, “that I can’t get over. But all this stuff comes from over there. [...]

[...] Knowing those coordinates would of course be very important, but the other realities would still remain nonrealities to you unless you changed your primary focus. [...]

[...] Because of this even the past as you think of it, as I told you, is never done and completed, but constantly changed by your present and future.

[...] Now many of your own attitudes have changed by now, but initially he used some of your past attitudes as a basis, not realizing that you had changed them. [...] However he exaggerated it—but the facts have changed.

In the past such behavior had led to an increased frenzied activity, mildly but not inordinately erratic. [...]

[...] Superstitiously he felt that in hiding fears about your parents he hid them for you both—shoved them under the psychological rug; but the rug became heavier and heavier.

[...] Ruburt was outraged that having treated you the way they had, they would so humiliate themselves as to beg for your aid, and instead decided that basically they did not feel humiliated but were asking what they considered their just due.

[...] I believe that thick, sprawling works like “Unknown” Reality offer some important answers, but beyond that it’s up to the multidimensional, multitudinous, over four billion multinational individuals on this planet to follow their own intuitions and seek answers in their personal ways. Lots of those people will never hear of the Seth material — nor, as Seth himself has said, will they ever need to — but then, Jane and I know that some will, and so we proffer what we can.

We also think science is “objective” enough in its own terms of serial time and measurement, as it claims to be, but that eventually it must choose to look inward as thoroughly as it does outward. [...] We project our inner knowledge “outward” in distorted fashion; thus on a global scale we thrash about with our problems of war, overpopulation, and dwindling natural resources, to name but a few.

[...] In the material as a whole there are bound to be significant clues as to the nature of the human animal: creative clues that can’t help but enlighten us in many — and sometimes unexpected — ways. I deal with some of the material we’ve acquired about the Seth-Jane relationship in Appendix 18 for Session 711, in Section 4; but here I want to stress our overall interest in knowledge, whatever that knowledge may be, and wherever it may lead us.

[...] Despite appearances there is not a dulling of sense impressions on her part, but an infusion. The difficulty in concentrating does result from this, but then she is concentrating elsewhere.

New paragraph: While your beliefs do structure much of your dream activity, other issues are also involved simply because the focus of your awareness is not acutely directed toward physical reality, but is only opaquely concerned with it.

[...] Facts are only accepted fiction, of course, but the ideas must make sense and fit into the accepted “story.”

Beyond this there are experiences but seldom recalled, in which the usual identification of your consciousness with physical-life orientation is gone. [...]

[...] But even the sloppy workers will indeed pick up your ideas of excellence, and try to translate them, finding even a new satisfaction in their work—but only if you think of what you want as a product, and not what you fear you will get instead.

Now in one context those ideas are valid, but they are also deceiving—because your present focus will determine which reincarnational episodes you become aware of (intently). In that context, two lives in one century, overlapping, seem contradictory, but I tell you all along that you live many lives at once.

[...] I thought she’d probably not have a session, but eventually she decided to after we had talked it over. [...]

[...] This is a simplification, but the cells were put in a kind of dry storage. [...]

[...] It’s a thought I’ve had often, but haven’t voiced. [...] But it embodies massive contradictions, of course, for the very illness sets up strains in the relationship that wouldn’t even exist were the illness not present. [...]

[...] An impossible task, of course, but one I’m acutely aware of these days. [...] I’d have been amazed had she done so, but glad to comply. [...]

(She wasn’t too clear as to what she was panicky about, but as we talked I began to understand that she was re-experiencing the same round of fears that she had many times in the past, and that many of these private sessions have been devoted to over the years: her mother, her need for love, her fears of abandonment, the conflicts involving success and the psychic work, our relationship, and so forth, if anything’s left. [...]

(Jane grew very unhappy as I talked, and I grew angry, as before—but we’d covered all the same ground often. [...]

[...] Time not only goes backward and forward, but inward and outward. [...] But in the terms in which I am speaking, it is the inward and outward directions of time that give you a universe that seems to be fairly permanent, and yet is also being created.

[...] Cellular structure maintains brilliant effectiveness in the body’s present reality, but knows itself free of it. [...] The cell might gladly “die,” but the specifically oriented man-and-animal consciousness would not so willingly let go.

(“It’s wild,” she continued, “but I know that all of this is leading up to alternate man, probable man, and parallel man. [See Appendix 6.] I thought you were tired tonight, but I decided I wanted the session instead of looking at reruns on TV … especially after I got that stuff while I was doing the dishes tonight, on cells and biological prayer.”

[...] The ghostly qualities in that event fit in with what I was trying to do in the painting: By leaving the thick gray and white underpainting of my “portrait” of “Jane” without color, I realized, I could express not only a probable interpretation of her, but the colorless qualities of the Saratoga experience itself. [...]

There is material in the book that you have not had time to assimilate, but tonight’s session, followed together, will be of great value. [...]

[...] But Seth returned at 11:30.)

[...] He need not take a walk every day for example, but on faith perform some kind of physical activity that he would if he were physically satisfactory. [...]

These suggestions can effectively take the place of Psycho-Cybernetics, but only if they are followed.

[...] The systems are divided, but not separated by space or time. They coexist but they cannot meet naturally, as the negative universe coexists with your own but is divided from it.

[...] I wondered whether Seth would pick up any impressions connected with Linda, but he confined himself to impressions that originated yesterday as far as Jane and I were concerned. The N and Norcross indicated in pencil on the tracing signifies a blind embossed trademark on the envelope flap, but Seth said nothing about this either.

[...] Don left a sealed envelope, prepared to my instructions, with me, but I did not plan to use it for this evening’s experiment. Jane knows of the envelope but did not see it. [...]

[...] I did not intend to use this object for the envelope experiment, but decided to on the spur of the moment after it was made. [...]

[...] John thanked us but said it would be too late and that he would see us next time. [...] Both Jane and I were glad to see John, and later we discovered that both had the impulse to ask him to stay, but did not for fear the other would rather not. [...] But John no sooner closed the door upon leaving, than Jane resumed dictating.)

(I did not have time to say it here, but when I did the sketch I had the feeling that there might be more than the one bed in the room. But these I could not see. [...]

No potentiality is ever ignored, but given full opportunity to use its abilities. Not only does such a potential depend upon inherent abilities, but also upon a facility to use energy and to gather it together in one field as a unit.

[...] The mattress was straw but the bed itself was the best bed in the family, handed down from Throckmorton’s father. [...]

[...] since on the other side so to speak there was an incomprehensible frightening chaotic dimension, malevolent, powers beyond our imagining; and that to question the stories was to threaten survival not just personally but to threaten the fabric and organization of reality as we knew it. [...] which meant more than mere ostracism but the complete isolation of a person from those belief systems, with nothing between him or her and those frightening realities.... [...]

Part of me doesn’t want to contend with this material at all but last night I had one of the strangest, quite frightening experiences—all the odder because there are so few real events to hang on to. [...]

[...] The feelings I was getting went even further, that religion or science or whatever weren’t attempts to discover truth—but to escape from doing so, to substitute some satisfying tale or story instead. [...]

The coming taxes are involved—but only because they serve as a springboard—as your family visit did—the springboard that rearouses feelings of disapproval. [...]

[...] You do not approve of yourself because you think you should be a better artist, or a better writer—but in any case, you do not let yourself appreciate the self that you are. [...]

[...] Every time the taxes come up I feel poorly, but no one is perfect. [...]

You may have to experiment some for the proper wording of your message, but three days at the very least are necessary before you can tell, through results, how effective it has been. [...] But continue the exercise even if this happens.

[...] Yet that experience is the image that reality takes for you now, and so in other terms earthly life is one version of reality — not reality in its entirety, but a part of it. [...]

[...] Their effects may have surrounded you, or you may have switched beliefs in one particular area of your life; but each can be changed if you utilize the power of action in the present. [...]

[...] Try to feel the statement in whatever way is possible — that is, do not allow distractions, but if your mind insists upon running about then channel its images in line with your declaration.

[...] She tried to read yesterday’s session, but couldn’t at all. [...]

[...] Jane tried again to read the session, but couldn’t. At 3:10 I started to read it to her when Mary Jean came in to check the flow of the antibiotic. [...]

The bacteria is naturally found in every bladder — but when you collect it or isolate it, the doctors then call it infected.

I repeat, Ruburt is in no danger, but I would also like some of the late sessions reviewed as reinforcement. [...]
