(I tried hard to focus on what she was telling me, so that I could write it down at once, but as she continued I saw that I’d inevitably lose a lot of it. [...] Neither of us had expected a spontaneous Seth session, but that’s what developed. [...]

[...] Even then, you might not recall the dream, but the situation itself as it comes to your attention might make you check your tires, decide to put off your trip, or instead lead you to inner speculations about whether you are going too fast in a certain direction for your own good at this time. But you will get the dream’s message.

[...] “I was Seth then,” she said, “but it was half and half there for a while. [...] It was more me topside, but he was definitely there at the end.”

[...] Another portion might come from a neighbor, of course—but from the dreamer’s interpretation of a neighbor’s remark that further brings him the dream message.

In actuality this retention is mental, a mental attraction to other mental actions or personalities; but this attraction, while mental, still projects in certain fashions into the physical field. The attractions weaken, but during their duration, when certain conditions are met, communication can take place.

They exist in actuality, but not in a form with which ordinarily you would be familiar. [...]

[...] The personality, through the inner self, has indeed created or constructed the physical form, but the very material from which it was constructed also contains its peculiar consciousness, as you know.

[...] You cannot say “I live in a safe universe, but—” —but anything. You cannot say “I live in a safe universe, but I am threatened by the economic problems of my state,” move to Pennsylvania, or to Timbuktu (humorously intent). [...]

[...] But I also wanted some material on myself, since my “distress” of a couple of weeks ago had returned; symptoms in the stomach, back, etc.—various shooting pains.

[...] You are reacting, and have been, to some of your mother’s attitudes toward men who work at home, so you try to prove to yourself and others that this is really not only as difficult as outside work, but more so. [...]

I will now, ordinarily, pick up any dangerous warning signals concerning your health or Ruburt’s, but it is still a good idea to query me now and then directly.

There is a difference between wanting more, which is legitimate, and envying those who have more, for in such cases you harm not only yourself but those whom you envy.

[...] He wants to help you, rather normally, because he feels rather illogically but understandably, that in helping you he helps a part of himself. [...]

[...] Such a procedure would have satisfied a strong demand of your nature, but it would not have isolated you to an unhealthy degree, since it was close by.

[...] (Pause.) You have a conscious mind, but this is only the “topmost” portion of your mind. [...] Much more of your knowledge can be conscious, therefore; but a false belief, a limiting one, is as ambiguous to your nature as any apple tree’s idea that it was a violet plant.

[...] Some contradict each other; the signals given to the body and to the inner self are not smoothly flowing or clear-cut, but a muddied jumble of counter-directions.

[...] But if you believe that the inner self is dangerous and not to be trusted, if you are afraid of dreams or any intrusive psychic material, then you deny this help and turn aside from it.

[...] You can change those areas of your life with which you are less than pleased, but you must take the responsibility for your being.

[...] In class Jane might have listened to portions of a tape as it was being made, or immediately after class was over, but seldom would I hear her playing the same tape later—if we had a copy of it, that is. She’s fascinated to hear herself speak as Seth, and sing in Sumari, but she always wants to move on. [...] I don’t want to overstate the issue, but neither does Jane pay that much attention to a book once it has been published. [...]

[...] There are many in all areas of life, and this involves not only an excitement on the part of your own species, but the same kind of curiosity and excitement on the part of other species as well. Again, most difficult to explain—but those connections that exist between all species and the environment are themselves affected. [...]

[...] Strange it may be, but Jane and I have never conducted a search for class artifacts, as our friends had just been doing, and as other former students had done before. We grew up without modern conveniences like portable tape recorders, of course, but even so our natural creative desires had always been to express ourselves graphically, in written and printed words and in drawn and painted images. “The body, again, does possess such a natural faith, and it has nothing to do with esoteric methods, and so forth—but, again, deals with a kind of self-evident biological knowledge. [...] I will have further pertinent material to add to the overall category of Ruburt’s situation, but I am simply making this evening’s session to give him a sense of immediate direction.

I shall of course take advantage of the opportunity, but then you will have time to speak to me at your leisure. [...] Manipulation in the physical universe is of course a necessity, but there are ways by which the human individual can become aware of other quite valid realities, and still maintain balance and control within his own more usual field of activity.

[...] I have no qualms with this, but it is possible, and in this stage of your evolution it is necessary, that the human personality learn to become flexible, to change the focus of awareness so that other realities can be perceived. [...] Effects that will at least be of some import; but you must remember the table in our analogy of the man in the trance state.

[...] But regardless of our scopes of activity we are not young men. [...] You have more time than you suppose, not only in your present life but in others.

Adequate scientific proofs, such as science so surely needs, requires the enlargement of consciousness; not, my dear doctor, on my part, but on the part of science. [...]

[...] Her voice this evening was rather soft; she used some pauses but they were not very long ones for the most part.)

They are brought into existence in a subjective manner, but they then are independent action, and as such may continue to exist in duration within the physical field, according to their original electric potential. [...]

[...] Habit, then, has not only a psychological, but an electrical and psychological nature and implication.

Thought and emotion then, is not only generally related to the physical mechanism, but as electrical actions, thoughts and emotions act directly upon the system. [...]

[...] His rigidity of attitude resulted in a trend for self-destruction, tempered it is true, but dangerous. [...] An overproduction of adrenaline that kept him stirred up, but also an overproduction of certain chemicals that physically slowed him down.

[...] If the alarm is set at four-hour intervals, this can eliminate the onset of symptoms, but in each case he would then rise and move about some. This does not seem necessary since the symptoms are now minimized, but I believe the step would prevent them entirely.

He felt danger strongly but could not run, you see. [...]

[...] The treatments being taken did indeed physically relieve nerve pressures and rigidity, but would not have done so had the mental condition not already been relieved.

That was, of course, no coincidence, and helped provide you at least with a feeling of extra support, by reminding you that there are doctors who were not blindfolded completely, but were quite open to new beliefs. I will have more on this later if you want it, but I have given you the pertinent material that I hope will ease Ruburt’s condition now, while also paving the way for healing experiences, (long pause), healing experiences that will happen indeed almost magically (intently) as Ruburt relaxes and allows his natural motion to express itself more and more.

[...] He called a colleague of his who was in Ithaca, and described Jane’s finger condition to him, but if memory serves he received ambiguous information again. [...]

[...] He used suggestion and so forth—but body and emotions both stubbornly retained their opinions. [...]

He knew he had access to an amazing amount of energy, but pretended that he did not so that all the energy available would go into the effort to use his abilities properly. [...]

[...] He is beginning to realize it, but that should be reinforced in the suggestions given. [...]

The rooms bear the brunt of beliefs also as mentioned earlier, but the inhibited anger against the conditions and against himself, for feeling powerless to change the conditions—these bring him face to face with issues he has hidden. [...]

We will be working toward a simple walk each day regardless of the distance, but as he becomes freer he himself will feel the impulse, as already he feels the impulse to change the rooms.

(Numerous questions were raised by the event, of course, but Seth doesn’t go into them this evening. [...]

Ruburt’s creativity not only involves that kind of behavior, but the mystic elements of the personality, meaning that the inner activity is very intense, so that Ruburt learned from a young age to develop a certain kind of secrecy. [...]

[...] That existence was expressed in the personality, but not in the normal conversation with the boys he dated, or with his friends. [...]

The atoms and molecules themselves, through their own capsule comprehension, form into particular objects under the direction, but not the coercion, of the individual who is in charge of any given particular physical construction.

[...] Therefore, here you have three different glasses, but each one exists in a different perspective, in an entirely different space continuum.

[...] The 63rd session, when John Bradley had last been a witness, had also seen some voice changes; but they had been mild compared to this.)

[...] But each individual creates his own space continuum.

[...] However if he did not have such an outlet, and if you did not have such an outlet in your own work, then indeed we would have had much more trouble, because this layer of personal subconscious would then be not merely a receptive channel but one that also radioed its own noisy and demanding stations.

My personality may indeed at times show that I am somewhat of an impatient man, who boxes his pupils’ ears, symbolically of course, but I have never made any pretense to be other than I am.

[...] The distortions, too numerous to mention here, were the result of inexperience, not only on Ruburt’s part, but also on the part of the personality who did live and was called Frank Watts.

[...] Your desires go out from you in time, but in all directions. On the one hand as a species your present forms your future, but in even deeper terms your precognitive awareness of your own possibilities from the future helps to form the present that will then make that probable future your reality.

(Long pause.) Other democratic societies had existed in the past, but in them democracy was still based on one religious precept, though it might be expressed in different ways — as, for example, in the Greek city-states (in the sixth and fifth centuries B.C.). The Holy Roman Empire united a civilization under one religious idea, but the true brotherhood of man can be expressed only by allowing the freedom of man’s thought under the banner of cooperation; and only this will result in the fulfillment of the species, with developments of consciousness that in your terms were latent from the beginning.

[...] By their nature certain kinds of organization, behavior, and experimentation exclude other quite-as-valid but different approaches. [...]

(Five scheduled session dates have passed since we held the 884th session three weeks ago; we missed four of those, but did hold a private, or deleted, session on October 10. [...] Later Sue laughingly admitted that she’d been nervous at first, imagining all kinds of adverse reactions either Jane or I might have—but she’s doing a fine job. [...]

[...] (Not to mention that innumerable experiments have proven that “physical matter” isn’t solid or objective at all, but “only” energy!) We have, then, the paradox of mind denying its own reality, let alone its importance. [...] But for the materialists, the mind-brain duality isn’t scientific in the orthodox sense. [...]

Then tonight she began writing “a fun thing” about our cats, Billy and Mitzi, who are brother and sister just 10 months old now: “In the beginning, Billy and Mitzi weren’t even kittens yet, but only bits of sky and cloud that wanted to be pussycats. [...]

An apple can be red, round, weigh so much, be good to eat, sit in a basket, but be natural on a tree. [...]

[...] But the song is being created from its beginning and its end simultaneously. [...]

[...] So the portions of your psyche that you recognize as yourself are significant and intimate and real, because of the inner pauses or silences that are not actualized, but are a part of your greater being.

Rob was intrigued not only by the material but by Seth himself as he began to manifest his own personality more clearly. [...] But on this particular night, Rob watched, amused, while Seth told him in no uncertain terms what he thought of my experiment — using my own lips to do it! [...]

[...] But without their previous experience, you would not have entered such a state so quickly, with so little knowledge and preparation. [...]

Schizophrenia is caused by a personality fragment that is broken off, so to speak, from the primary acting personality, operating often in direct opposition to it, but in any case, operating as a secondary personality.

[...] As the personality on your plane actually changes, expands and grows to its potentialities, as it presents at various times varied images to the world (such as — if you’ll forgive me for using cliches — a smiling face, a sorrowful face), but is still basically the same personality, so on another level does the entity present at various times a varied appearance and speak in a different voice. [...] But it exists as something entirely different, you see, within another system. You perceive but the lowest point of its reality, so I will tell you now that the various stars and planets and heavenly bodies that you observe in your universe do indeed exist as such, but only within your system.

It is easier then to say that they appear as matter when they are projected into your system, but this is not precisely correct. Nothing but the various stages of consciousness separates the dimensions, you see, but the separation is quite effective nonetheless.

(Once before, in the first and 18th envelope experiments, an object was used that was similar but not identical by any means. [...] In the 18th experiment, held during the 212th session, a few more impressions were obtained; but overall the results were interfered with by other factors in a way that doesn’t seem to happen these days. (“An M”, We can make M connections but do not know if we are correct. [...] The word manipulate is found twice in Jane’s handwriting on the object itself; but there are also three other words on the object that begin with this letter: Mean, en masse, and more.

[...] “I had the feeling of my hair being long and parted in the middle, as though I’ve got some kind of humanoid features; you know, with the hair hanging down on each side of my face, which is something like an animal’s — but with very intelligent eyes, very warm and soft.”⁸ Jane finally opened her eyes. [...] “It’s as though I’m seeing or feeling what I’m capable of at the moment, but I know there’s more there behind that. I can feel it, but I can’t get it out.”

[...] In your reality, experience is dependent upon time, but all experience is not so structured. [...]

In the same way that you latch upon one personal biological history, you latch upon but one mass earth history. [...]
