Now, this is the basic problem. The basic reasons for both Ruburt’s symptoms and the holdback in your own work, and the answer to both lies in learning how to release yourselves to yourselves, to let your own emotional natures relate to each other. You must get over the hump therefore of being afraid of your emotions, both of you.

Much of what you discussed today was discussed by me a good deal of time ago. (True.) The suggestions I made at that time were not followed. Others were not, for both of your reasons, because the situation served both of your purposes to some extent.

Because now you fear that the situation may become a way of life, you are finally both willing to take more direct action. To some degree you have both been avoiding each other. You made a pact not to discuss troublesome, frightening or critical problems, particularly those which did not seem to have an immediate solution.

Now. To the both of you, unconsciously, an emotional encounter means an encounter with unpleasant emotions. You have both done a job of hiding your emotions from each other, even more than your thoughts.

You both felt that the most innocent of caresses could destroy the foundation of your lives. [...] It drove Ruburt at times to try to deny womanhood, to assure you and herself that her body would not betray you both. He would not have his periods—thus he would show both of you, symbolically, that you need not fear his body, since it obviously was not functioning as a woman’s should.

Ruburt’s physical system has felt the strain simply because both of you feel that it is his body that would be the threat in the child area. You both become panicky therefore in two main areas—both that would affect your primary directives, to devote yourselves to artistic and psychic work.

[...] Both of you decided that you would give your lives to creative work. Both of you decided that you would have no children, not only because this fit in with the first goal, but because the energy connected with family life would go into your creative productions, would be saved and available when you began to embark upon the psychic work for which you had also planned.

[...] You went too far, both of you, in that direction. All touch, to each of you now, was not innocent or joyful encounter; it meant “How far will this lead, and is the time of the month correct?” This applies to you both. [...]

[...] You should both be able to sense that power, however, more than others, and to direct it where you want it, both together and individually.

Released tension in the head area can also change both Ruburt’s depth perception and head pressure, as it lessens. [...] Concentrate upon your creativity, both of you, and your power, with the morning suggestions I gave you, and the library. [...]

[...] Overall, you are both doing well. In your painting, remind yourself of reincarnational selves, for there are more portraits ready, and in your nap time, beside rest, both of you give such suggestions:

You are still both in the habit of minimizing improvements, and negatively projecting into the future, although at times you have spurts of confidence that are responsible for Ruburt’s quite definite physical improvement.

[...] Added to this are certain attitudes of your own, that is attitudes both of you have. Both of you have the same attitude, which means that they are magnified, doing double duty.

Whenever the word is used it has a negative connotation to you both. [...] Granted Ruburt exaggerated where you made adjustments, but both of your emotional attitudes are the same at that level.

[...] Both of you enjoy a sense of moral superiority in the presence of your brothers’ families, that they eat so heartily while you refrain. Both of you now prove that you are not sunken in materialism by being thin. [...]

[...] Both of you dealt with the matter in the old way, to some extent.

[...] While you were at Artistic you both used that as an excuse. [...] That is, I think, enough for you both this evening, so I bid you a fond good night.

(After supper this evening both Jane and I did a lot of griping and complaining about her symptoms, and our inability to solve the problems involved. [...]

[...] You have had quite a bit for one night, but each of you can creatively use these problems, and turn them to your advantage, and this is a learning process in which you are both involved. It is not always an easy matter of saying no, and I do see both of you handling your situations well. [...]

When a belief in an abstract term seems to negate another abstract term, it may simply be because your acceptance or expectation is not expansive enough to include both.
