Far beneath however, at any given time in your terms, there is a dominant, characteristic, unique feeling-tone that pervades the personality and colors all of the other activities, feelings and thoughts. There is also a rhythm at this level however, and such a basic feeling-tone will also of itself change into another. Feelings and thoughts exist in the ground of the basic feeling-tone.

In the case of individuals such feeling-tones pervade all experiences and perception, and can even therefore alter the perception of reality, therefore effectively changing it. En masse the same story is true. The world as you know it therefore at any given time is pervaded by its own “ground feeling-tone” in quotes, which becomes the medium from which and in which other feelings and ideas emerge.

These are all highly creative, regardless of the apparent effects of what you would call the less desirable ones.

All in all he surprised himself by his performance with your parents. Such a performance would have been impossible for him early in your marriage. He simply would have run away, as he wanted to run away this time.

Jane kept wanting to come out of trance. She had an impression of Midge in a robe, crawling on the floor near the oil stove in the living room. Jane saw no flames, she said, but “it was all hazy, like smoke... I don’t know, but I don’t feel good about it right now.” Then, “I’ve still got this scary feeling. Maybe I’ve just translated all the mixed-up feelings about my father and the house there and everything into Midge. I’ve got the impression that she was trying to close the door of the stove.”
