(One afternoon during my illness, as I lay drowsily in bed, I had two distinct impressions. First, while my eyes were closed I felt that the “area of darkness” they encompassed to the left and the right was abruptly and definitely wider. This sensation was brief, yet lasted long enough for me to be sure of it.

I am going to speak about your past condition, and I am also going to speak about action. Although the reason, or reasons, for your particular illness involves personal causes, indeed in one way or another all illnesses have a root within ego’s attempt to stand apart from the action of which it is composed, so that at times it fights against itself.

(Jane now took a very long pause, one lasting at least a minute. During these periods she will sit quietly in her chair, her eyes closed, her hands usually unmoving in her lap. When she resumes she merely carries on with the thought at hand as though there had been no interruption.)

This, temporarily, is something like what happened to you, Joseph. The inner self is aware of other realities. It is aware of the ego. Remember here the difference between consciousness of self and the ego, for the difference is important. The ego is but part of the self, part of the conscious self, but focused in one direction.

The inner self, feeling itself part of action, is aware of facets of reality of which the ego is ignorant. It knows that roles can be reversed. There is so much here to be explained, and so many questions that must be answered. For I tell you, at the risk of being misunderstood grossly, that there is only one reality, and value fulfillment, which you may, if you like, equate with goodness.

One small note, Joseph. Because I have given you so much advice, I did want you to know that I realize that you have already taken significant strides, as you will, I know, continue.

Ruburt will get his from me in due time. He is being directly helped in many ways through the mere fact of holding these sessions, for in speaking through him, he also to some extent partakes of my energy. The relationship between us, in fact, is one that we shall discuss most thoroughly in the very near future, for now you will be able to understand what you could not perhaps have understood earlier, concerning our communications in terms of actions involving actions.
