Projections continue in the waking state, beneath it, as they continue beneath the dreaming state, you see. Now you have learned the methods at least that allow you to become aware of some projections that occur during the dream state. You realize that knowledge alone is not enough, that practice and ability play a considerable part. There are methods that will allow you to catch yourself in the middle of projections embarked upon from the waking state. This is considerably more difficult.

It can only be achieved as a rule after some proficiency has been gained with recalling dream projections. Here you are dealing with the waking consciousness in its normally strong and dominant condition. You must be able to let it operate and yet perceive beneath its surface the other conditions, the projection conditions, that are also operating.

You must allow the normal waking consciousness to become transparent, so to speak, without however disturbing its flow. When this is accomplished you can also become aware of the projection conditions. This is almost like working backward, for directly beneath the thoughts and impressions of waking consciousness, you will glimpse dream images like those that appear just as you fall to sleep.

[...] Directly beneath, still using our analogy, will be found the nutrients and seeds of those desires. [...]

Beneath this layer, in a third subconscious level, still dealing with the present personality, lie those possibilities of development which have lain barren and were not sufficiently strong to send up seeds to bloom in the sun of conscious ego.

It is also possible that these secondary personalities, emerging, give access to buried abilities and benign constructive abilities which had been buried beneath heavier fears that weighed them down. [...]

Beneath these ideas is the fear of the mind itself, the belief that its abilities are fine and dependable up to a point — but if it goes too far then it is in trouble.

There are many other deep psychological connections beneath schizophrenic behavior, but since this book is also devoted to other subjects, we will go on to other ways in which conflicting beliefs bring about mental or physical dilemmas.

While you go about your daily chores and endeavors, beneath normal waking consciousness you are constantly focused in other realities also, reacting to stimuli of which your physical conscious self is not aware, perceiving conditions through the inner senses, and experiencing events that are not even registered within the physical brain.
