(Jane wants me to note that this is Day 2 of her new approach to life, based on the session for February 1. I do think the session is an excellent one, and I’ve copied it for use at the house, too.)

[...] Now I may or may not return, again according to those rhythms of which I speak, but know that I am present and approachable.

[...] So-called objective approaches will only work at all when you are dealing with so-called objective effects — and your physicists are learning that even in that framework many “facts” are facts only within certain frequencies,² or under certain conditions. [...]

To some extent I am suggesting in this book a different approach. [...]

(Once again now, Jane wondered why the “more elaborate or complicated qualities” of her trances [she couldn’t really explain what she meant here] were necessary in order for her to deliver this book, as opposed to the “easier” ones she’d experienced for Personal Reality. I suggested she forget such comparisons and think that “Unknown” Reality simply required a different approach, for whatever subjective reasons, and that perhaps her constant questioning would be taken care of as her work on it progressed.⁵

This is on the sideline: the approach has been made or will be made on a Tuesday. [...]

(After the session John told us that he has informally been approached to work for a rival drug concern—Abbott, recently.)

Continue to do your Framework 2 approaches. [...] Ruburt’s approach with the phone call (to Tam) today was excellent, and that approach can be used in many other areas of your activities by both of you. [...]

I can’t note the same for The Magical Approach to Reality: A Seth Book—the very promising work that Jane and I first discussed a year and a half ago [in August 1980], after Seth had started his group of excellent private sessions on that subject.⁸ I watched Jane try to write the book a number of times; last month, in Note 6 for Session 939 [in this chapter], I finally expressed the opinion that she wouldn’t finish the job. Or, to put it another way, Magical Approach has yet to undergo a resurrection by her! [...] I think Magical Approach would have been a fine book as she planned it—but that it ended up squelched by at least two major factors: She was too inhibited by the subject matter [her physical symptoms] out of which the magical approach material had grown, and she was bothered because she had chosen to emulate the plodding way in which I put together the Seth books. [...]

[...] And as I write these closing notes I remind myself once again, as I often do, of those promises we made each other when we married in 1954—“that neither one of us would interfere with the other’s creative approach to life, no matter what resulted from the actions we individually chose…. Yet as the years passed I still had to learn the obvious—that Jane’s creative powers are inextricably a part of her whole approach to life, including her symptoms. [...]

Even so, Jane had the magical approach in mind two days later, when she typed a rough last note for her journal on February 10: “Still annoying problems with fingers… hoping to clear this up, using in part robs new suggestion page [credo] for me. [...] as I see it even that can be utilized in magical approach, again, Seth finished his book monday.”

[...] In a fashion that particular approach, for all of its reliance upon “sorcery,” is not actually true to the magical approach at all, because it insists so fervently upon the impediments that stand in man’s way, and stresses the importance of rituals and methods, and the almost superhuman effort that is required (pause) in order to meet the “magical ends.” [...]

The system does not practically approach any lively sympathy for the masses of mankind, or any particular understanding of the more mundane events that mark man’s daily ways. [...]

[...] Seeing it cheered Jane—yet my wife continued to hassle [as she put it] her efforts on Magical Approach, asking herself again and again whether she really wanted to do that book. [...] It was often difficult going for her, though: Magical Approach still wasn’t flowing the way she wanted it to.

THE MAGICAL APPROACH, AND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN “CONSERVATION” AND SPONTANEOUS DEVELOPMENTS

(Three months ago, way back on August 13, following the outline she’d written on July 8 for The Magical Approach to Reality: A Seth Book,¹ Jane began work on the first draft for Chapter 1 of that project. [...]

ROB USING THE MAGICAL APPROACH.

You used the magical approach. [...]

[...] It was momentarily free of limiting beliefs, and it naturally used — and chose to use — the magical approach to answer what was a very simple, now-forgotten intellectual question: What might be in today’s newspaper?

(Jane became so relaxed as session time approached that she told me several times that she’d have to put off the session until tomorrow night. [...]

[...] So you were both at certain levels aware of the approaching storm. [...]

[...] I opened the curtains—it was now approaching dusk—and turned on the blower. [...]

[...] Jane didn’t particularly want to be turned on her side, but the time was approaching. [...]

[...] The “inner structure” is one of consciousness, and the deeper questions can eventually only be approached by granting the existence of inner references.

[...] The nature of time, questions concerning the beginning or ending of the universe—these cannot be approached with any certainty by studying life’s exterior conditions, for the physical references themselves are merely the manifestations of inner psychological activity. [...]

[...] You continued that companionship, however, at other levels of activity, levels that are still open and that must be taken into consideration whenever we approach any discussion of dreaming and the dreaming world (intently.

[...] Communication with the inner self, communication with entities on another level can be approached from one or the other of two methods. The approaches are different, and one is more often tried than the other.

Now, it is only the initial approach which varies.

[...] You should begin such a program as soon as possible, regarding it, however, as not a last desperate approach toward an unsolvable problem, but as a proper step of development in your understanding of the magical approach to life. [...]

Reading the sessions of the Magical Approach with some consistency is now in order, where for example I might counsel at another time that they be set aside for a while. [...]

[...] Much of our material will be far more significant to you after your approaching period of psychic activity. [...]

[...] Do not attempt to approach him simply because there will be unstable elements and a fine balance to be maintained, his visual appearance being dependent upon many conditions. [...]

[...] It was almost a nightmare—in fact Jane woke me out of it to prevent this seeming reaction on my part, I was fairly sure the dream concerned my father’s approaching death, but certain elements in it were similar enough to Seth’s suggestions about contacting Dr. Pietra, above, to make me tell Jane about it—on the off chance the dream had been more than it seemed.

[...] I noticed at once that she has a much smaller patch on her left elbow—it’s approaching the state of healing the right one showed a couple of weeks ago. [...]

[...] I am, however, here, whether or not I am speaking, and approachable. [...]

Last month, in the opening notes for Session 931, in Chapter 9, I recorded that on July 8 Jane spontaneously wrote “a complete outline for a book on Seth’s magical approach to reality.” Actually, we’ve been quite aware of the potential of such an idea ever since Seth began that material a year ago.³ After supper this evening we went over the loose-leaf notebook of information Jane has accumulated for The Magical Approach to Reality: A Seth Book, and discussed how she could follow her outline in putting all of that material—on our dreams, psychic events and insights, her poetry and our essays—together with Seth’s private sessions on the magical approach. [...] 2 at Three Mile Island overheated and approached a meltdown of the uranium-packed fuel rods in its core. [...]
