“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

The personality of Christ is an idealization, and a clue to the entity of which each individual personality is composed. And as far as prayer is concerned, though I realize that neither of you pray in those terms, someone does indeed listen. [...] For the individual is part of All That Is, and therefore partakes of the abilities of the psychic gestalts of which we have so sketchily spoken.

This was as close as man could come in his imagination to that which is, and this is all right. The basic idea behind Christmas is definitely important, whether or not the intellect is able to see its significance.

The getting out of oneself that is involved is excellent therapy, and therapy that does others good, as well as the self involved. There is much more here, however. Culturally speaking, there is a strong connection with pagan intuitions, deep and meaningful, that found newer and broader expressions.

The legend of Christ is of great psychic import however, and is intrinsically true. This does not mean it is based in historical fact. In many ways it is more true than historic fact, for man himself created that which had not been provided. The creation nevertheless happened in quite real terms, and is part of mankind’s inner recognition of the pyramid gestalts of which I have spoken.

(9:30.) I do not, therefore, want you to concentrate your efforts in memorizing methods of perceiving other realities, but to realize that such insights are everywhere within your grasp. If you understand that, then you will rearrange the organization of your own thoughts quite by yourself. [...] It is far more important to read your own thoughts than it is to learn to read the thoughts of others, for when your own feelings are known to you, you easily see that all other feelings are also reflected in your own. [...] Your life is one dream that you are remembering.

Regardless of your circumstances, your condition in life, your training or your aptitudes, at your own threshold you stand at the center of all realities—for at your center all existences intersect. [...] Each portion of the universe carries the knowledge of all other parts, and each point of a reality is (underlined) that reality’s center. [...]

[...] The speakers are those inner voices that first taught you physical languages. You could be equally correct in calling them the voices of electrons or the voices of the gods, for each is a representation of All That Is, overflowing like a fountain both with knowledge and with love.

Two and a half years ago I wrote in the closing notes for Session 869, in Chapter 10 of Mass Events, that she had finally received from Seth the full title for this book: Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment. [...] We’re glad to try to answer questions like that, but our correspondents cover many topics and express many viewpoints—and some are hard for us to handle. [...] We think that both writers express extreme points of view, and that both are much too adulatory of us. [...] The writer of the other letter, while praising our work, is caught up in questions of conventional religion: “I keep wondering over and over again whether Seth is a demon or a deception. [...]

[...] However, it is no coincidence that you should hear me speak and that we have been drawn together. All of you are aware that there are realities that you cannot see or touch and you are all willing—you are reaching out. [...]

If there is one thing only I could tell you it would be this. Be still—listen—listen to the voices within you that you have not listened to. [...] I am here, and because I am here I tell you that your own inner self does continue to exist, and as I teach others now, so shall you also be witnesses of the existence of All That Is. [...]

[...] In this case, the cellar is the mind. The alligators represent fears, the fears that lie within you; your subconscious. [...] Yet these thoughts that you fear do not represent any real danger. [...] There is a reason the dream comes at this time. [...] The fears have to do largely with experience that may come to pass within a three year period. [...] This fear is formed into alligators and you disconnect them from your own being. They are perfectly harmless parts of your personality that you have not accepted fully. [...]

I know about all of you. It is because you want to know that I am here. There are many truths you know that you are not aware of. [...]

The panspermian theory is that life reached the Earth from a living organization permeating our entire Milky Way galaxy, and that there is a creator, or intelligence, or God out there. In talking with Jane this noon I went the step further by saying that the galaxy itself is alive—not merely full of life. Jane and I discussed various ways that All That Is could have seeded life on earth through the roles of probabilities, and how certain successive forms could take root upon the earth when environmental and psychic conditions were right, and so give the appearance of an evolutionary progression. All That Is, I said, might have offered those same incipient forms to the living earth many times, only to have the earth reject them or fail to develop them for many reasons. But even these latest scientific theories are based upon ideas of a past, present, and future; their proponents do not consider that basically time is simultaneous—that the universe is being created now. We had an interesting discussion. [...]

[...] It puts you in touch with the magical feeling of yourself that you had as a child, and that is familiar to you at levels usually beyond your physical knowledge of yourself. It is better, then, to use the approach because you recognize it for what it is than to use it specifically in order to get something that you want, however beneficial. (All very intently:) There is no doubt at my level that use of the approach can clear up Ruburt’s difficulties naturally and easily. If it is used because you recognize its inherent rightness in yourself, its inherent ‘superior stance,’ then it automatically puts you in a position of greater trust and faith. It opens your options, enlarges your vista of comprehension, so that the difficulties themselves are simply no longer as important—and vanish from your experience in, again, a more natural manner.” (9:37.) “In a fashion, all of the material that I have given you [...] You are at that point now.

I explained that lately I’ve been thinking about what can happen when a person chooses to be born with very strong gifts, but then discovers that for whatever reason or reasons he or she cannot use them, or has to pay a high price to do so. At first I thought it contradictory that such conflicts can arise within nature’s framework—then I realized that they must happen all of the time, and so, actually, are natural after all. I used to think that nothing could keep an individual from showing a great ability. Now, I told Jane, I realize that things are far from being that simple. The use or nonuse of an attribute can have as many ramifications as there are human beings who possess whatever version of it: ranging all the way from being completely buried in a life, to being simply left alone, used just “as is,” or thoroughly transformed in expression.

[...] It’s not that we disagree with him, really, or find his material unacceptable. It is that we cannot make it work for us the way we want it to—that is, to evidently supersede deep and powerful inner goals. [...] I told her that Seth had said nothing at all about what I regard as the central conflict: the one between her sinful self, so-called, and her spontaneous self. I even agree that our challenges may well be successfully handled in one or more other probable realities, that in those terms that’s an entirely acceptable way for us to learn. [...] Where is our faith? [...]

It is your contact with All That Is, but it is up to the conscious mind of the present individual as to how much its abilities will be used and in what manner. The present individual is to learn. [...] It is up to the ego to learn how to use these vast potentials that lie within the inner self, how to use them to help itself and others.

[...] The imagination is all important. [...] Now it is extremely important that his conscious attention be elsewhere after he has given his suggestions. I suggest the following: that he worked at his writing certainly no less than four hours a day, preferably five; and that a portion of this time be given to poetry.

[...] If your conscious mind is to be a foreman he must be one who is easy to get along with, and not so authoritative that he is yelling demands all the time. He is to be a gentle director and not a bully.

He is only a bully when he suspects that his in quotes now “subordinates” are in rebellion. The inner self is not a subordinate to begin with. It is the power that has been given to you as an identity, its services available to you—that is, available to your present personality, for its use.

The ideas I have just given will help Ruburt build up self-trust, and in the main that is all that is holding him back right now. The body is responding, and his trust is growing, but it must be built up considerably.

You wrote recently that to some extent or another your daily reality was being changed by your dream recall—an excellent point. Perhaps that idea can give you some glimmering of the ways in which the daily events of your readers’ lives are changed as a result of our sessions. They see the world differently, and in one way or another they communicate that difference to friends and associates. That is a kind of qualitative event that in its own way cannot be judged or ascertained, and it presents a certain kind of emotional evidence—a living knowledge—that is transmitted to others, and is in its way more valuable than any scientific treatise that might validate our work.

If many of your letters are from those in need, this also shows that people, who were previously in despair at finding any methods to help themselves, now want all the information they can get. Often the contact is really enough, and the reply, whatever it is, for it assures them that someone, somewhere, is trying to operate within a circle of knowledge and sanity.

All of these ideas can be put to excellent use now. [...] Preparing Oversoul Seven gives him a good point of concentration, yet beyond that he should allow himself the leisure and pleasure of playing with concepts, with poetry, and even with painting. I suggested you do the library together again for that reason—and your dream contest is good for that reason.

Your stated universe emerged out of that kind of interval, emerging from a master event whose true nature remains uncaptured by your definitions—so there will be places in our book where I may say that an event known to you is true and untrue at the same time, or that it is both myth and fact. [...] [Perhaps], then, you will let your imaginations play upon the usual events of your world, and glimpse at least in part that greater brilliance that illuminates them, so that it leads you intuitively to a feeling for the source of events and the source of your world. The units of consciousness that I have mentioned are (underlined) that, and they do behave as I have said. They are also in other terms entities, fragments of All That Is, if you prefer—divine fragments of power and majesty, containing (pause) all of the powers of consciousness as you think of it, concentrations without substance in your terms.

I do not mean by such a description to minimize the importance of physical life, for All That Is endows each portion of its own transformed reality with a unique existence that is duplicated nowhere else, and each spark of consciousness is endowed with a divine heritage that is never extinguished—a spark that is apparent in all other corners of the universe.

2 After the session I wanted to tie in Seth’s material on infinity with mathematical ideas of that concept, but my reading soon convinced me that such an idea was too involved a task for a simple note like this. However, I told Jane, in his own way Seth had incorporated mathematical ideas in his material: I saw correlations between his probable realities, his intervals, and the concept of an infinite number of points on a line—and that some mathematical definitions of infinity are considered to be more basic, or of a greater order, than others. [...] I do think that Seth’s material on the “origin” of our universe can be termed an “ideal point,” embracing our mathematical systems, and that his concept of All That Is has no “limits” in mathematical terms. [...]

However, let us remember that when creating and experiencing a challenge, on any scale, consciousness may choose a predominantly positive or negative focus, or it may seek to achieve a balance. While some utility companies in the United States are in trouble with their nuclear plants, then, other companies do own plants that perform very well and very economically. [...] There’s talk that the nuclear power industry will fail in our country, but Jane and I don’t think it will. What haunts many people, especially those living downwind from nuclear facilities, are the horrifying consequences that could result from an accident that released unchecked radioactivity into the environment. This chance, no matter how remote it may be, exists in every country in the world that has even one nuclear establishment. It’s just as real for those nations that are even thinking of going the nuclear way. So consciousness is really exploring the nuclear question in global terms, even though here in Dreams I usually deal with its “local” aspects.

That is, in his feeling of unity with All That Is, he excluded other human beings, and on your plane it is necessary for the personality to relate to them. Only after such relation is isolation of that nature of benefit. [...]

As far as the ink sketch is concerned, do not forget that while your man was imprisoned by his senses, in trying to reach beyond them in your physical universe your man could not perceive anything at all; and yet it is through these very earthy senses that he has a chance to glimpse beyond, or indeed realize that there is a beyond to glimpse.

Your isolation during working hours becomes even more precious and more constructive when contrasted with periods given to friends, as sweet is sweeter when bitter is on the tongue. You forget also that because of your makeup all your experiences are translated into your work, and work becomes play and play becomes work.

Everything on your plane is a materialization of something that exists independent of your plane. Therefore within your senses there are other senses that perceive inward. [...] The senses within them, that is within the recognizable senses, perceive and create an inner world, they perceive part of an inner world. This is difficult for me to explain to you. [...]

6. Much of Seth’s material in this session (and in this paragraph), along with his obviously intense feelings about what he was saying, reminded me of a group of sessions he gave well over a decade ago on the three creative dilemmas of All That Is. In them he discussed at length the “agonized search” for expression of the powers of creativity and existence, and how the beginning of that search “may have represented the birth throes of All That Is as we know it.”

(All emphatically and joyously:) In your terms, the world is intensely different from one moment to another, with each smallest portion of consciousness choosing its reality from a field of infinite probabilities.³ Immense calculations, far beyond your conscious decisions as you think of them, are possible only because of the unutterable freedom that resides within minute worlds inside your skull — patterns of interrelationships, counterparts so cunningly woven that each is unique, freewheeling, and involved in an infinite cooperative venture so powerful that the atoms stay in certain forms, and the same stars shine in the sky.

In the light of such ideals, surely you seem wanting — yet your reality is one in which the greatest freedoms have been allowed. This means that you have given yourselves full range so that all probabilities could be explored, and none left out that were physically feasible.

1. Seth, way back in the 23rd session for February 5, 1964: “Nor do I know all the answers. It is, however, a fact that even man, in his blundering manner, will discover that he himself creates his own physical universe, and that the mechanisms of the physical body have more functions and varieties than he knows.”

(Long pause at 8:58.) The Sinful Self obviously is not a burden that Ruburt carries alone, but one inherent in your civilization. [...] (Long pause.) In terms of goodness, you can certainly tell the Sinful Self that health and vitality are indeed not only good, but in their way they represent the spiritual attributes. [...] It is already blessed by All That Is before its birth, and its desires, impulses, and characteristics are also inherently good, meant to insure its own fulfillment, to bring out its best characteristics, and to help the rest of the world as well—all very important issues. [...]

[...] (Long pause.) One small note: again, the Sinful Self should be assured it is good, it is not sinful. It is safe to express itself, it is safe to move, and it was produced by All That Is out of the great energy of universal love. [...]

The idea is to show it that those beliefs no longer apply, that the framework in which they were learned was highly faulty. Instead, itself—the self—is indeed good, as it supposed before it took on such nonsense. [...]

As you read this group of sessions, the idea is in no way to accuse the Sinful Self. It is instead to understand it, its needs and motives, and to communicate the idea that it was sold a bad bill of goods in childhood—scared out of its wits, maligned. [...]

Though you cannot find me, you know that I am here. Though your own parents seem to disappear before your eyes and vanish into eternity forever, so it seems that all that you are will also disappear. I can assure you that your parents will live. I can assure you that death is another beginning, that when you are dead, you are not silenced. For is this silence? Is this presence that you sense here now within this room, death? [...] More alive than some of your professors and friends, for aliveness is dependent upon the state of your consciousness, dependent upon your awareness, your ability to perceive and to feel. [...]

[...] And when you learn what you must learn, you will be able to look back to the pasts that you have known, and ahead to the days that you will know, for there is no end because there was no beginning. [...] This is the meaning of existence and joy. The God that is, is within you, for you are a part of All That Is. [...]

I am joyful though there is no physical heart that I have claim to. And I am in this room, though there is no object within which you can place me. [...] You are as disembodied as I. You have a vehicle to use, a body that you call your own, and this is all. I borrow Ruburt’s, with his consent, but what I am is not dependent upon atoms or molecules, and what you are is not dependent upon physical matter. Your own consciousness is part of each season. [...]

I am here to tell you that your joy [is] not dependent upon your youth, for I am hardly young. I am here to tell you that your joy is not dependent upon your physical body, for I have none. I am here to tell you that your joy is not dependent upon your nervous system or physical form, since I have none. I have what I have always had, the identity that is mine. It is never diminished. [...]

It is known and unknown, forming all stages of creativity, and you are held within it, graced to be a part of the divine framework of All That Is.

(And so there it is. [...] She told me that Jane loved me, and that she was having “a better night.” [...] And the fact that my wife is having a better night may mean something, or not … I’d told her this afternoon that I’d been prepared to receive a call from the hospital at any time, telling me to get my ass down there because my wife was failing and the end was near. And Jane smiled and said that she’d been tempted many a time to have me called to come see her, especially late at night.

You are supported, never abandoned, and always couched lovingly in the great yet intimate presence of All That Is, whose love forms your breath, your life, your death, as in which the unknown divinity is always blessed and ever known.

[...] I said I thought she’d broken that off because she was afraid it wouldn’t work — although I’d thought it showed signs that it was working. I also thought she’d stopped free associating because it had collided with those deeply held beliefs that had led to her physical immobility. I told her that during the last month I’d given up hope, and that she must have, and that her condition was a perfect mirror of that loss for each of us. [...]

Your love-making continues to be important, for there he experiences letting go without effort, and that will carry over into other areas. This will be all. It is all that is needed if the suggestions given are followed through. [...]

He believes that freedom is possible, meaning physical freedom. [...] But freedom should not be thought of as an absolute, but as a process of fulfillment that will take place naturally because he wants it to, and believes that it will. All suggestions as given last week stand.

There is some swelling, very slight sometimes, when the joints are involved and this merely provides a cushioning process as circulation is quickened and pressure is taken away. There is repair in all areas. Because the procedure is a natural one, the heat sensations can neatly show you the areas directly involved at any time.

He realizes that freedom is within him. He did not understand that before. He realizes he does not need the symptoms, and is in the process of losing them. He must want freedom as strongly as before he wanted to repress it, and this is in the direction in which he is now moving.

[...] It is important before we continue that you realize that consciousness is within all physical phenomena, however. It is vital that you realize your position within nature. Nature is created from within. The personal life that you know rises up from within you, yet it is given. [...] Since you are a part of Being, then in a certain fashion you give yourself the life that is being lived through you.

This energy comes from the core of BEING (in capital letters), from All That Is (with our usual capitals), and represents the source of never-ending vitality. It is Being, Being in You. As such, all of the energy and power of Being is focused and reflected through you in the direction of your three-dimensional existence.

While your feeling-tone is uniquely yours, still it is expressed in a certain fashion that is shared by all consciousnesses focused in physical reality. So in those terms you spring from the earth as all the other creatures and natural living structures. [...]

The ego is a very specialized portion of your greater identity. It is a portion of you that arises to deal directly with the life that the larger You is living. [...] The ego is composed of various portions of the personality — it is a combination of characteristics, ever-changing, that act in unitary fashion — the portion of the personality that deals most directly with the world.

I want to give you all the pertinent information you require. I also want to see, however, that Ruburt’s own rhythms are followed, so that you do not get an overconcentration of renewed worries or concerns. We are embarked upon a journey of expression, some of that expression will necessarily involve feelings that have been inhibited, of a stressful nature. The problem is not with the feelings, but with the fact that they have not previously been expressed or accepted. [...]

There are other dream episodes that Ruburt has forgotten, and help that he has received, that does not need to become conscious. All that is primarily needed is trust in those healing processes, and particularly in the body’s relaxation. [...]

(No session was held Monday night because Jane was so relaxed again—that is, I’d thought that was the reason, but more about that later. [...] I don’t feel him around at all.” [...] She still sat in her usual place on the couch, and following a suggestion I’d made the other day she decided to try having the session from that position. [...]

To that extent he has carried on the sessions, using them to good purpose. The natural person is of course the natural dreamer, and it is for that reason all the more unfortunate that psychology managed to divorce the world of dreaming from natural healthy psychology. [...]

[...] Connected with it is the consciousness of all those who understand it, perceive it or originate it. [...] Instead, the consciousness that held, or holds, or will hold the information attracts it like a magnet…. [...] It is not dead or inert. It is not something you grab for, it is also something that wants to be grabbed, and so it gravitates to those who seek it.

[...] Now part of the focus and the strength comes from those two births, and the intensity behind them is also the reason why the book’s nativity strikes the world as strongly as it does. [...] He may not have the face that you see when you look in the mirror, simply because you cannot see your true identity in a mirror. But I am looking at all that is visible of the author of Seagull, and you should know him best of all. [...]

[...] This can develop to such an extent that all of your experience is seen only in relationship to this idea-growth. (Seth called for the hyphen.) Data that seems unrelated to this core belief is then not assimilated but thrown into the corners of your mind, unused, and you are denied the value of the information.

Now on the surface there is nothing wrong with that belief. If you hold to it and do not examine it, however, you may find that the word “responsible” is quite loaded, and collects other ideas that are equally unexamined by you. What is your idea of being responsible? [...]

[...] “In the beginning” you were only aware of that psychological activity. [...] The form was there, but it was not manifest (intently). I do not particularly like the analogy, but it is useful: Instead of small particles (long pause), you had small units of consciousness gradually building themselves into large ones—but a smaller unit of consciousness, you see, is not “less than” a larger unit, for each unit of consciousness contains within itself the innate (underlined) heritage of All That Is.

Electrons in your terms are precognitive, and so is your cellular consciousness. Your body’s relative permanence in time is dependent upon the electron’s magnificent behavior as it deals with probabilities. (Pause.) The cell’s stability, and its reliability in the bodily environment, is dependent upon its innate properties of instant communication and instant decision, for each cell is in communication with all others and is united with all others through fields of consciousness,³ in which each entity of whatever degree plays a part.

[...] You have taught yourselves to respond to certain neural patterns, and to ignore alternate ones that now simply operate as background activity. That background activity, however, supports a million forces: the neural stimuli that you accept as biologically real. [...]

2. Seth should have said that light can be defined as being made up of waves or particles, but he didn’t put it quite that way, and I let stand what he did say. He gave me a knowing, half-smiling look while delivering this paragraph, for it was obvious that his material was related to a note I’d shown Jane today—one I’m finishing for Mass Events. In it, I’m trying to deal very simply with both the uncertainty principle and the complementarity of light, among other tenets of physics. [...]

Even if those sessions can’t be quoted in these essays because of the obvious space limitations, I can note that Jane and Seth each continued to develop the themes already laid down in the sessions that have been presented. What they really signify for the long term is (as I wrote in the essay for April 16) a continuing program of intense study for Jane and me—and yes, for Seth, too—as we seek to better understand our chosen commitments in our present physical lives. Our questions reflect those that everyone has, whether consciously or unconsciously—and among them is that eternally human “Why?” behind each event that we know. The material in the sessions is exhilarating, painful, enlightening, perceptive, frustrating, and maddening by turn—and sometimes, it seems, all of those things at once. We’d like to publish much of it, even though it’s hardly all flattering, and even though some of it, because of our ordinary human limitations, may not be very useful in everyday life. [...] I won’t claim that residues of it may not be buried within my psyche (and within Jane’s), but it’s very difficult to stay mad when one agrees with the simple but most basic and profound idea that you do create your own reality.

I should add that I don’t think Jane has started to “set … aside” the medical interpretation regarding her “arthritis situation,” as Seth suggested she might do when he came through on April 12. (That session is presented in the essay for April 16.) Any decision Jane makes about altering the deeply set beliefs involved in her condition will require the cooperation of a number of portions of her psyche, including her sinful self, and it appears that at this time neither of us is ready to try achieving that kind of overall effect. [...] Ironically, Jane’s sinful self is one of the main creators of and participants in her illness syndrome, so any beneficial changes she can bring about will first call for a major shift in the attitude of that very stubborn portion of her psyche. It will be a triumph indeed if and when we can create an alteration like that. And all of this presupposes that each of us will be ready to draw “new facts” into our daily lives from Framework 2.

Jane rejected that total at once, feeling it’s far too high, and announced that she’ll probably go back to her old routine of eight to ten aspirin a day. [...] It’s very unsettling for us to learn that the prescribed medication isn’t doing its job after all. It is, I remarked somewhat bitterly, another sign of the frustrating, mixed results one must learn to expect, at least in some instances, from the imperfect practice of medicine. To treat rheumatoid arthritis with aspirin? We’d always found that incredible. Yet it’s still the best way to go, Dr. Mandali said, even with the new anti-inflammatory, nonsteroidal drugs that the FDA (the U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has released to the marketplace recently, for often they produce more side effects than aspirin. And her advice is reinforced by published material I’ve collected lately for our files.

At my age (63), then, I’m learning once again that I can’t live Jane’s life for her, or protect her from the motivations of her own physical and psychic explorations and choices, no matter how much I may want to. Nor could she do that for me. On many levels that kind of psychic interference is quite simply ignored by the individual in question, and rightly so. [...] And her innate mystical nature must fully know and accept that the time, manner, and method of her physical death, whenever it occurs, is as much a part of her body’s life as its life is. I deeply believe that her psyche would insist that she doesn’t need any sort of basic protection by me (or anyone else) to begin with—only understanding. I live daily with the proposition that my wife is in the process of making profound decisions, and that once she’s made them she’ll respond accordingly both physically and mentally.

Man possesses an innate biological knowledge, however, of right and wrong, and to a large extent religions, as they are utilized, distort much of that information. [...] Men always form some kind of group, in which respect is given of one kind or another to their own species, and to nature. Your communication system may, in time, make the distortions of your God concepts much more visible, so that honest men can at least question “How can God say this to the Jews, and that to the Arabs? Is it possible that we have read the message wrong?” All That Is is within each living thing. All That Is is within that which is not, also. Man is not set one against the other. [...]

[...] He is onto something, and you can help. That is all.

Another point: the meetings in question alter probabilities, and again in a way that in your terms was hardly possible before, for the world looks on, so to speak. As of now, of course, you live in a survivor’s world, for all of the catastrophes of a worldwide nature that could have happened thus far, have not. [...]

[...] This is mainly Jane’s idea; I imagine that for the most part I’m willing to stick to our regular routine. [...]

All activities are good for him, mental and physical. [...] It was fear that slowed him down. Faith in his abilities and in himself as a part of All That Is, will now set him in motion. [...]

An alternate example is your painting. These are the most fruitful ways for both of you to approach all problems. The same qualities and spirit that you bring to your work should be extended to your life pattern, for they are correct for you both, and you operate at prime efficiency then.

Ruburt’s recovery will be the symbol of a far greater recovery and of inner development that will never fail him. He must now push himself to physical activity, into vigorous action, and in doing so he is expressing the inner decision that he will no longer tamper with intuitional spontaneity.
