(All intently at 9:40:) No methods will work if you are afraid of your own impulses, or of the nature of your own being. Most of you understand that All That Is is within you, that God is within creation, within physical matter, and that “He” does not simply operate as some cosmic director on the outside of reality. You must understand that the spiritual self also exists within the physical self in the same fashion. The inner self is not remote, either — not divorced from your most intimate desires and affairs, but instead communicates through your own smallest gesture, through your smallest ideal.

Some correspondents write: “I realize that I am too egotistical.” There are many schools for spiritual advancement that teach you to “get rid of the clutter of your impulses and desires,” to shove aside the self that you are in search of a greater idealized version. First of all, the self that you are is ever-changing and never static. There is an inner self in the terms of those definitions, but that inner self, which is the source of your present being, speaks through your impulses. [...] You must trust the self that you are, now.

(Pause.) I am not pleased with those analogies, but sometimes they are all I can use to express issues so outside of normal channels of knowledge. It is as if, then, the earth, with all of its species, existed in complete form as a fully dimensioned cosmic underpainting, which gradually came alive all at once. [...] They expressed a certain kind of consciousness that sought a certain kind of form (all intently). Physically the species appeared — all species appeared — in the same way that you might imagine all of the elements of a highly complicated dream suddenly coming alive with physical properties. Mental images — in those terms, now — existed that “in a flash of cosmic inspiration” were suddenly endowed with full physical manifestation.

You are all pieces, you see, of the whole; but you are not all the same pieces of the whole, but rather individualized pieces of the whole. You do not all fit together like a crossword puzzle that any idiot can put together. [...] You are the whole, but you are all highly unique. [...] The self or structure or personality travels outward and inward and (if you will forgive me) in all directions. It is action. [...] It can contact that whole self which in your terms does not yet exist, but which is of course always present. In your search you must contact that whole portion of yourself toward which you are growing—toward which I hope you are growing. This is your individual circuit, so to speak. All ways are one way, but your way is your own way. [...] He is—Baba—highly advanced indeed. He is a way, however; he is not the end. He is not completed. He is right, but he is wrong in taking pleasure in his rightness. [...] It ill-behooves me to speak.) Nevertheless he who is and knows that he is, is. He has no need for words and he has no need to proclaim himself, for he speaks without the necessity for words and he is heard. [...] I speak to you now in words because without words now, there would not be the necessary understanding that must be reached before I can become wordless.

[...] Now three of these personalities are yours: one is not yours. One is not “yours" in your terms as of this time. When you look up and recognize, you will accept that which you do not now recognize as yourself, as yourself. If you looked up now, you would not recognize the self that you will recognize. Because the Spacious Present exists as it is, the recognition has already been made. [...] My friend Ruburt in many respects is also a slowpoke. The environment is not where you think it is. [...] The voice that does not “speak" in your terms is yours, but the instructor is not yourself as you know yourself. It is a self you do not as yet know in your terms.

[...] There is nothing there in your seminar that is not here now and that is not wherever you are. This does not mean that that which is, is readily accessible. It is there for the taking, but you must learn how to take it; for if you try to take it, you lose it, you see.

He is indeed. You have an idea of what that type of personality should be like and, to some extent, and for awhile, you will manage to distort his image until you are sure that it is pure and good and true. [...] You will find that there are definite elements put upon your own personality that you must be ready to face. [...] There is no growth without strain, without the shattering of old barriers and the learning or new responsibilities but these responsibilities are experienced as joys. I would, however, not suggest that, except for our friends here, you have any witnesses for sessions for some time. That you work this out, the two of you. A session or so is all right but I do not want you placing yourself in a position where you are trying to prove the legitimate nature of such communication to others. It is too great a strain upon your own personality at this point and it is not necessary at this point. Your own interpretation of the experience is far more important than the interpretation that others place upon it. [...]

If there is any sense of divorce between you and All That Is it is only yourself that has done the divorcing and it is quite an artificial divorce. You cannot stand apart from All That Is and examine it. [...] Who is the self that wonders and where does it derive its meaning and its energy. [...] There is no reality within you that you do not understand if you open yourself to the feeling and the understanding. [...]

[...] You all realize that you are playing with vocabulary. The meaning of your being and the meaning of All That Is is as close to you as your breath and if there is any division between you and All That Is it is a completely artificial division that you have yourselves erected and maintained. [...]

[...] You are all in Alpha I, and I did not force you into it. Now bear with me for a few moments, realizing as you do so that there is in reality no distinction between the atoms and molecules within your precious bodies and the atoms and molecules that fly about the room quite innocently and free; realizing also that there is great space between the atoms and molecules within your body, and that if some very small person were flying through they would find your bodies as large as a galaxy; realizing also that the skin that seems so solid to you is very open, indeed, and does not separate you so much from the universe, as it connects you with the universe; and that there is little division between the atoms and molecules in those knees and those legs and the atoms and molecules that form the floor upon which the legs and knees seem to rest. [...]

I bid you a fond good evening and, again, those blessings that I have to give, I give to you, and those that I do not have you will have to get for yourselves. And to see that we have a grand finale, let me say again, that the energy that is available here is available to each of you. You all have reservoirs of energy that you do not use, sources of strength that you do not admit, so use them. [...] The vitality that rings, however distorted, through this voice rings through your own molecules and through the tip of your ear and through your (word lost).  This energy is a part of you that you have denied. [...]

[...] Now the acquiescence that dwells within your atoms and molecules is an acquiescence that has to do with creativity that knows no negation, that realizes, instead, only the benefits and the joys and the reality of That Which Is, and within this acquiescence there is no denial and no negation for all things are experienced, recognized, and accepted as a part of All That Is. [...]

The next step is taken when identity is able to include within itself the intimate knowledge of all incarnations. Yet in this state the independence of the various reincarnated selves is not diminished. Each of these steps of consciousness involves identity with the inner recognition of its whole identity with All That Is.

As each separate identity then seeks to know and experience its other portions then All That Is learns who and what it is. [...] All That Is can never know itself completely, since action must always act and each action creates a new unknown.

This is a cornerstone for consciousness and for personality development. It is only a first step, however. [...] This particular step is not attained by all within your system. [...] This state has been called cosmic consciousness, but it is hardly that.

There is energy within her that is given gladly and is used by the entire physical family. As long as she is certain of your loyalty and support, then she is a firm foundation upon which you may all build. Now, there is something here upon which I shall not dwell in class. —The wine is not as good as the brandy! —However, I will say here that large portions of her energy are diverted to provide supportive help physically for all members of the family. She is not religiously inclined in your terms because she does not need religion in those terms. She is intuitively aware of her position with All That Is, and she does not need to rationalize it. [...]

All right now, I will fix all of you. [...] If you will not listen to me when you are awake because it is too late, then I shall be like a recording machine so that you learn while you sleep. [...] Over that I have no control, and it goes without saying that you can listen or not. [...] You still do not realize the potential that you have and that you use in the dream state, and that you do not use ordinarily in your waking life. [...]

It is only because I am so aware of the reality of time to you that I leave now, for I realize that your hour is late. But time is as transparent as the air in this room and your 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 o’clock flies through the air like birds. I speak to you all individually and individually you all know me, so while you all hear the same words individually they mean something different to each of you. [...]

All existence is vulnerable for vulnerability is the framework and the sensitivity that makes existence possible. All That Is is vulnerable to All That Is and the possibilities and probabilities of creation that dwell deeply within it. To close anyone off, any channel off, is to deny creativity and existence. [...]

He is doing very well, but in the case of children, in most but not all, they are able to handle their fears. [...] But they are not afraid of their fears in the same manner that you are. Remember, consciousness has its own protection, its own vitality, and trust in the vitality of your own consciousness and of your own way and that is the answer. [...] It is only when you fear you do not have this vitality that it betrays you, and then it does not betray you, but you betray it. You have all the energy, all the ability, all the power and all the strength you will need within you to face each and every situation and be the selves you want to be. [...]

Now, it is extreme egotism to imagine that you can only be alive if you have a body. [...] The voice that I can use on occasion could shatter the small image through which I speak and the spirit that belongs to your parents could not be contained in one bodily form or two. The spirit of your parents is, of course, free. [...] It is this that frightens you in your dreams. [...] If you had to go through all that they had to go through to contact a beloved daughter, how would you feel if you were met with fear and terror? [...]

Except that God is always more than All That Is, is the sum that you cannot find and for my definition of God I, therefore, leave you with that one for God is the sum that you cannot find, that resides within you, that is more than anything you can discover, that is his creations and yet more than that which is created within; whom infinities rest. [...]

Now each of you is a part of All That Is, highly individual and unique, like no other, and that like no otherness will never be taken from you. [...] You will realize that you are more than you realize that you are now, but you will not lose the state of which you are now aware, and regardless of the fact of reincarnation and regardless of probable selves the unique self that you now call yourself has eternal validity even though the memories that you cannot now consciously recall will be yours in their entirety. And physical life in its reincarnational self is not some chaos thrust upon you, some evil from which you must shortly hope to escape. It is a particular reality in which you have chosen to know your existence, in which you have chosen to develop yourself, and it is indeed a system, again, like no other system, a unique and dear and beloved portion of reality in which you have decided to flourish for awhile. [...]

Now that is one level, and on another level you think, “I am of the earth and strong and vital, and those who rely upon such thin, high, intellectual matter do not know what they are talking about. [...] And this is a personality that you have set up for yourself because behind it all in the French court you glorified in the use of words, in the high play of intellect in what now to you would seem to be surface, artificial qualities of stereotyped verbal behavior. You are quite able to follow any discussion in this room and it is about time that you realized it and used those intellectual abilities that are your own, and it is about time that you stopped telling yourself that you do not understand that which you well understand. [...]

All possible entities that can ever be actualized always exist. [...] All That Is must, by its characteristics, be all that it can ever be, and so there can be no end to existence—and, in those terms, no beginning. But in terms of your world the units of consciousness, acting both as forces and as psychological entities of massive power, planted the seeds of your world in a dimension of imaginative power that gave birth to physical form. In your terms those entities are your ancestors—and yet [they are] not yours alone, but the ancestors of all the consciousnesses that make up your world.

The body learned to maintain its stability, its strength and agility, to achieve a state of balance in complementary response to the weather and elements, to dream computations that the conscious mind alone could not hold. The body learned to heal itself in sleep in its dreams—and at certain levels in that state even now each portion of consciousness contributes to the health and stability of all other portions. Far from the claw-and-dagger universe, you have one whose very foundation is based upon the loving cooperation of all of its parts. That is given—the gift of life brings along with it the actualization of that cooperation, for the body’s parts exist as a unit because of inner relationships of a cooperative nature; and those exist at your birth (most emphatically), when you are innocent of any cultural beliefs that may be to the contrary.

[...] Your beliefs often tell you that life is hard, however, that living is difficult, that the universe, again, is unsafe, and that you must use all of your resources—not to meet [life] with anything like joyful abandon, of course, but to protect yourself against its implied threats; threats that you have been taught to expect.

[...] All That Is, is now, and you are a part of All That Is now. [...] The avenues for development are open now. You can, now, set out to explore environments that are not physical if you want to, but I do not see any rush of students at that invisible door!

[...] I have done it too, in my time, and there is good reason for it. But the fact is that physical matter is not solid except when you believe that it is, and that organization is transposed from within upon the without. It is not transposed from the without upon you. You form the reality that you know, and even though the table holds up your arms and you may lean upon it and write, I still tell you that the table is not solid.

[...] You will discover the multidimensional love and energy that gives consciousness to all things. [...] It will instead inspire you to take a better hand in the job of creation; and that feeling of divine presence you will find indeed, and feel indeed, for you will sense it behind the dance of the molecules, and in yourselves and in your neighbors. What so many want is a God who walks down the street and says, “Happy Sunday, I am I, follow me.” But God is hidden craftily in his creations, so that he is what they are and they are what he is; and in knowing them, you know him.

Now this is a big occasion for our friend, Ruburt, since his writing desk and all his materials are now in the other room. And as I always do to show not only guests and seeming strangers the nature of vitality but always to impress it as deeply as possible into your knowledge, then let me again remind you that this vitality is your own; that life, physical or nonphysical, is a full vitality that it is not necessarily quiet, that it is not necessarily sedate, and though my voice does not ring with the innocent chatter of children, that that same vitality that fills them fills me and fills each of you. That as you hear it here, feel it within yourselves. [...] Life is not quiet, it is not sedate. All That Is is not some long-haired gentleman with a saintly face. And the soul that each of you believe in is not some quiet distant note far divorced from your own reality. It is a pulse that beats within you and the pupil of your eye and the big toe of your foot and your elbow. It is not necessarily adult. It is not necessarily dignified. It is the force that gives you all life and do not restrain it. [...]

Now before I bid you a fond good evening let me tell you that those of you who come to class regularly and gravitate here, if you have not already discovered this for yourself, are the black sheep of the universe. [...] It is not an easy way, and all of you know that. It is past the time for you to be entranced by other personalities including my own. It is time for you to become entranced with your own personality. It is time for you to feel independent enough to launch yourselves from your own subjective reality into others; to emerge, to drop the paraphernalia of all dogma. [...] Not to substitute one authority for another, but to allow yourselves the freedom to recognize that the prime authority is All That Is that resides within you and that speaks with your own voice. [...]

Your problem is this. It is not important in the beginning whether or not the information checked for you were involved in the opening of new channels. To insist, therefore, that all the information be perfect, or your material has no value, is of course, a predicament that I hope you will not fall into. [...] As you continue, your information will prove more and more checkable in the physical reality to which you presently ascribe, and if you are interested in that area then, indeed, it must to some extent bear a strong relationship to the reality that you know if you request it. If you demand that as part of the validity of what you are getting, then you will receive it, but do not rush. [...]

[...] Imagine an onion, and if there is someone here who does not like onions, imagine anything you please. An onion comes up from the earth and the growth principle is within it; and imagine our poor onion in the earth. You see, I am not using a flower, and the onion comes up and it insists that it must know who God is and where He is that makes him grow. And so our onion, with the full vitality within it to grow from the inside out, as all things grow, instead looks at the fine carrot next to him, and such a lovely hue, and examines the carrot in his mind to see if this is God. [...] And the tree is much larger so surely, the tree must be God. [...] God instead must be a giant onion, a beautiful giant onion, and so our poor and stupid little onion spends all its life waiting for this giant perfection of an onion to come by and save it. He may even hallucinate such a giant onion but all the time the principle of vitality and power and growth is All That Is, and all of it that you can understand at this point, is within the onion. The principle within it that gives it its existence. [...]

Now, you also have the memory of your future existences, for time does not exist as it seems to you now, and a portion of you is aware of your future as it is aware of your past. [...] When your species squatted in the cliff caves and when they ran in terror across the face of the earth pursued by wolves and imagined that demons lurked in the shadows, when with ghost memories were great contrast to the world that they saw and know, and so they weaved a story from their memories. And so your legends are not only made of your past but they are also weaved from your future, in your terms, and all of these are interwoven even with your flesh. So that if all physical knowledge were taken from you, all the knowledge that you have learned since birth in this life, and that is impossible, but if it were possible still within you would always be the inner knowledge not only of your own private past and future, but of the private past and future of your kind and of your species. [...]

Now, so-called occult knowledge dealt with secret knowledge, and it is secret to the extent that every man must discover it for himself and that is the end of the secrecy. [...] Very briefly this evening some of you dealt with the reality of symbols, and this is extremely important for the physical body that you know is a materialization of symbols that you have created. You do not know the symbols for yourselves but you can discover what they are, and I will expect you all to do so. [...]

One believes that the conscious mind and the intellect have all the answers, but to this school this means that the conscious mind is analytical above all, and that it can find all the answers through reason alone. The other school believes that the answers are in feelings and emotion. [...] Intellect and feeling together make up your existence, but the fallacy is particularly in the belief that the aware mind must be analytical above all, as opposed to, for example, the understanding or assimilation of intuitive psychic knowledge.

Worst of all, there is no need for it. All of this treatment rests upon the idea that the conscious mind is highly inadequate, that deep problems are unknown to it, that it is meant to be simply analytical, and is unable to handle very intuitive or psychic material. [...]

Now: Such self-changes happen naturally as life progresses, and when the self modulates at any given time, it is different from what it was. When this occurs “all by itself” it is an innate reflection of the psyche’s creativity and happens with its own rhythm — connected to seasons of the mind and blood and consciousness and cells in ways that you do not as yet understand. But the whole structure and its subsidiary relationships change together, and the conscious mind is able to assimilate what is happening.

Now, I will speak to the lovely roses in the vase so that you will know I am not addressing anyone in particular. Now, one of these roses leaves the familiar world that it knows and embarks upon out-of-body experiences quite frequently, but this rose has a beautiful memory. In the out-of-body state this rose remembers all the out-of-body experiences it has had, but when it comes back to the body it forgets them all. It is not necessary that you remember, but if you want to remember, then indeed you can. [...] There is, in other words, an answer to the why. You are aware, however, that you take these excursions. For now, be satisfied with that and do not try too hard. [...] It is not the returning that bothers you. Now, I will give you some information on the subject, though it is too late this evening, and if you want some specific exercises that you personally can use, I do not know that you will smell as sweet as a rose on your return, but we will see to it that you get the exercises. [...]

[...] It resides in the housewife as she goes about her chores and psychic power is meant to unite you and not to set you apart as aliens to your brothers. It is to bind you with All That Is, to open your abilities so that you can comprehend and comprehension never excludes. [...] Therefore, listen to your own inner voice and follow your way, but do not trust those who tell you that good vibrations are here with A and B and C and bad vibrations are with E, F, G and H, for the energy that forms All That Is is within each. [...]

It is not a necessity, it is simply the result of ignorance. Now, and you all have the beginnings of a good text book, and I am going to ask you questions. You had better read it thoroughly, and if you will read some of the material again that is in the book, you will see what I mean. [...] And no man builds up his ego by crushing another, he merely crushes the inner being which is within him. [...]

Pure energy, or any “portion” of it, contains within itself the creative propensity toward individuation, so that within any given portion all individually conscious life is implied, created, sustained. Pure energy cannot be destroyed, and is “at every point” simultaneously being created. Your physical universe and laws give you little evidence of this kind of activity, for at that level the evidence shows you the appearance of time or decay. Your own psychological activity is the closest evidence you have, though you do not use it as such. [...] The psyche, your psyche, is being freshly created “at every point” of its existence. For that matter, despite all appearances, the physical universe was not born through some explosion of energy which is being dispersed, but is everywhere being created at all of its points “at each moment.”

Your psyche is being drawn back into itself, into All That Is, and “out of itself” into your individuation, in psychological pulses of activity that have a correlation with the behavior of electrons in your world. In the dream or sleep state, when you do not meet as directly with physical activity, there is the opportunity to learn more about the psyche by a study of dreams — those events that are so like and so dissimilar to your waking experience.

Those that do are chosen with great discrimination, dreams serving as one of the methods by which you ascertain the desirability of any given probable act. There is basically no difference at these other levels of existence between waking and dream events. [...] Those events that you do not accept as physical ones, however, also exist and join their own organizations. They do not simply fall away from your experience, but serve as focus points for events that do not concern you directly, while indirectly they form a definite psychological background. To a certain extent they become the invisible medium of experience from which your own specialized activities emerge, so that their nature is implied in your own life — and so that your life is implied in those other frameworks.

This is your reality, accept it or hide within all concepts. It is up to you. [...] These secrets, as our friend here told Ruburt, that you have told in class, that have had such weight to some of you, how dare any of you hold these secrets up between yourselves and All That Is and the experience that is waiting for you and available? That you think these secrets are that important, that they can stop the energy of the universe from working its way through you when that energy gives you your vitality and strength. For all of these issues are related, and the movement of your thought is as lively as the movement of any molecule and far more powerful. [...]

[...] That is, this is not an immediate alternative. It is an eventuality. [...] For several reasons, not all of them are religious, many of them simply cultural, you do not relate on a deep level to some of the people with whom you deal, the ordinary, square parishioner with quite conventional religious ideas. [...] You have felt for some time, as you know, that you are living a lie in that regard, and yet you do not know where to turn your abilities or into what field. When I spoke to you it was obvious that you would leave, and that you would not continue. [...] Those even that seem to have a secular nature you will mold. There is no real doubt in your mind as to which course to follow. [...] That is for you to work out with other... [...] And that is most important for in that way you can feel progress and a concentration of energy. [...]

[...] As sounds alone in your reality that have an impression upon you. As the meaning for the words, that meanings that you understand, as the electromagnetic realities that speed out from Ruburt’s lips, and all of these things you register and understand. [...] I know, for example, your great identity with all the other selves, in your terms, that you have been and will be and know that your feeling of isolation is an illusion and yet, you (Valerie) must know it. And so I know that each of you have your own inroad, both into concepts and experience. On the one hand, I know that you are traveling these inroads, even as I know that as I speak some of you understand me and use my words simply as maps to lead you to undiscovered lands, and others hear merely the words. [...]

[...] With that in mind, then, it is impossible to imagine the multidimensional creativities that can be attributed to All That Is. The term ‘All That Is’ can be used as a designation to include all of those probable gods in all of their manifestations.

[...] Now, however, I am concerned with the multidimensional aspects of All That Is. [...] There are no facts that can be given that can portray with any faithfulness the attributes of All That Is.

[...] Now it may seem to you that it is merely a matter of my not being available if I think Ruburt should not have an extra session. (I don’t think this at all.) Remember, however, what I told you much earlier. Sometimes I am very directly concerned in a session, and sometimes you get a session that has been programmed. This is putting it very simply, but you know what I mean.

He should indeed reread those sessions that he read today, and you paint because you love to paint, and forget what an artist is supposed to be or not to be. Have Ruburt forget what a writer or a psychic is supposed to be or not to be. Ruburt’s spontaneity let all of his creative abilities emerge. It is foolhardy to try and apply discipline, or secondary order, to a spontaneous creativity that automatically gives you the finest order that nature could ever provide. [...]

(Pause.) What you think of usually as order is an aspect of the spontaneous order that is within and behind the “mechanics” of all physical actions. The usual idea of order is greatly concerned with serial time, but spontaneity’s natural order, with its origins outside of time, has “all time to play with.” [...]

(Pause.) All creativity is basically joyful, it is play in the highest sense of that term, and it is always alive with motion. [...] (Whispering:) Ideas change the chromosomes, but the sessions and Ruburt’s books, and so forth, must first and foremost be joyful expressions of creativity, spontaneous expression that fall into their own order. [...]

[...] Consciously, you are usually aware only of your own thoughts, but those thoughts merge with the thoughts of all others in the world. You understand what television is. At other levels, however, you carry a picture of the world’s news, [one] that is “picked up” by signals transmitted by the c-e-l-l-s (spelled) that compose all living matter. When you have an impulse to act, it is your own impulse, yet it is also a part of the world’s action. In those terms, there are inner neurological-like systems that provide constant communication through all of the world’s parts. If you accept the fact that man is basically a good creature, then you allow free, natural motions of your own psychic nature — and that nature springs from your impulses, and not in opposition to them.

[...] Of course: The change of seasons meant that while I would be doing my own work on the book, the geese would be flying south. Already I looked forward to their migration, that ancient movement I’ve become especially fond of since we moved into the hill house over four years ago. Through the geese I want to associate Jane’s and my activities with nature rather than technology, for in nature I sense a great, sublime, ultimate peacefulness and creativity that far surpasses technology, can we but ever manage to approach an understanding of what nature really means for us physical creatures. To me, without getting into questions about the magnificent overall originality embodied in All That Is, nature is the basic physical environment which all “living” species jointly create and manipulate within. [...]

(9:59.) Give us a moment… You will discover the natural, cooperative nature of your impulses, and you will no longer believe that they exist as contradictory or disruptive influences. [...] (Pause.) At deeper levels, the impulsive portion of the personality is aware of all actions upon the earth’s surface. You are involved in a cooperative venture, in which your slightest impulse has a greater meaning, and is intimately connected with all other actions. You have the power to change your life and the world for the better, but in doing so you must, again, reevaluate what your ideals are, and the methods that are worthy of them. [...]

These are creative distortions on your part, directly related to specializations of consciousness that cut you off from the greater concourse existing at other levels between the species and the land. Again, consciousness everywhere pervades the universe, and is aware of all conditions. The balance of nature upon your planet is no chance occurrence, but the result of constant, instant computations on the part of each most minute consciousness, whether it forms part of a rock, a person, an animal, a plant. [...] This is a cooperative venture. Your own consciousness has its particular unique qualities, in that like other comparatively long-lived species, you associate your identity with your form far more rigidly. [...] There is a biological understanding that exists, for example, when one animal kills another one for food. [...]

[...] In those terms, it is still being created. The EE units, impressing a probable physical field, contain within them the latent knowledge of all of the various species that can emerge under those conditions.
