The terms are handy to describe certain affiliations and experiences of the psyche. In greater terms, however, those experiences and affiliations overlap. There are, unfortunately for neat definitions, no definite, absolute, complete boundaries. There are leaping, explosive, volatile, rapidly altering relationships in which psyche touches psyche, forms an attraction or mutual response that can be both eternal and fleeting, never destroyed or forgotten, there as a trace or as an overwhelming experience.

There are psychic affiliations that defy language. The term “reincarnation” hints at some. “Counterparts” hint of others. “Probable selves” evoke still other such experiences. In greater terms the psyche is always in a state of creative change. Counterparts can alter affiliations—a fact I did not mention earlier, simply because then it would have added a confusion.

If you choose a safe universe then you may indeed find some old habitual ideas, thoughts or beliefs, coming to haunt you. Those belonged to the unsafe universe, and made perfect sense there—and there they still do. When you change your affiliation and find yourself now and then encountering such feelings; and they are always one way or another feelings of insecurity—then admit to yourself that while they made sense in the unsafe universe, they do not belong in the safe one. Literally, such feelings make no sense in a safe universe. They are literally meaningless.

(Long pause at 11:05.) Very difficult to explain. In certain term ways, however, beside this, you and Ruburt have always been related. You have been aware of each other’s intents, feelings and purposes. Now, you can say that you were cut out of the same cloth (amused but intent). Your entire lives this time have been leading toward this new affiliation mentioned earlier.

The plants awakened before the animals—and there are reasons for these varying degrees of “wakefulness” that have nothing to do basically with the differentiations of specieshood as defined by science from the outside, but have to do with the inner affiliations of consciousness, and with species or families of consciousness. Those affiliations fell into being as all of the consciousnesses that were embarked upon physical reality divided up (long pause) the almost unimaginable creative achievements that would be responsible for the physically effective world.

[...] Your body is composed not only of the stuff within it that, say, X-rays or autopsies can reveal, but it also involves profound relationships, alliances and affiliations that nowhere physically show. Your thoughts are as physically pertinent to your body as viruses are, as alive and self-propagating, and they themselves form inner affiliations. [...]

Again, this may seem difficult to understand, because you assign psychological characteristics to sexual affiliation, whichever it is. [...]

The larger pattern of human personhood demands a bisexual affiliation that allows leeway in sexual encounters, a leeway that provides a framework in which individuals can express feelings, abilities, and characteristics that follow the natural inclines of the personal psyche rather than sexual stereotypes. [...]

(10:18.) Usually the second puberty follows the same sexual orientation as the first, but not always — for it is quite possible for the new affiliation to be the opposite of the first. [...]

(I suppose that one can find all sorts of variations within counterpart situations, all sorts of reasons for such affiliations, so I can merely hint at a few here as they rise out of the class framework or orbit around it:

The same applies to all “psychological” particles, to units of consciousness, and to their affiliations within personality. [...]

Now we discover that such references were tailored to our own rather limited ideas of the qualities assigned to the sexes, for in Psyche Seth makes it clear that the psyche is not male or female, “but a bank from which sexual affiliations are drawn.” [...]

The psyche is not only the repository for sexual affiliation, however, but contains hidden abilities and characteristics which are then triggered into activity by exterior stimuli. [...]

[...] They would certainly be psychological relatives, but with their own time schemes, languages, and psychological affiliations. [...]
