Now each of you is a part of All That Is, highly individual and unique, like no other, and that like no otherness will never be taken from you. [...] It is a particular reality in which you have chosen to know your existence, in which you have chosen to develop yourself, and it is indeed a system, again, like no other system, a unique and dear and beloved portion of reality in which you have decided to flourish for awhile. And in denying it, again, you deny the reality of experience. [...]
Now this inner drama cannot be understood by the ego, and so it is projected outward into external reality. Certain individuals, therefore, in history, certain geniuses, kings, priests, prophets, are touched by this light. All of the individuals living, in your terms, at that time have taken part in the same inner drama which is then exteriorized. The individuals then accept this projection upon themselves—the heroes, in other words, or the gods, or the prophets, or the kings. [...]
As an individual you carry within you such a blueprint, then; it contains all the information you require to bring about the most favorable version of yourself in the probable system that you know. [...] The information is knit into the genes and chromosomes, but it exists apart, and the physical structures merely represent the carriers of information.3 In the same fashion the species en masse holds within its vast inner mind such working plans or blueprints. [...] (Very forcefully:) In that picture man himself did not help create that inner world, or have any hand in its beauty. [...] In such a version of inner-outer reality the back-and-forth mobility, the give-and-take between inner and outer, is ignored. Man, being a part of that inner world by reason of the nature of his own psyche, automatically has a hand in the creation of those blueprints which at another level he uses as guides.
[...] Through various exercises in this book, I hope to acquaint each of you with the inherent oneness of the inside and outside realities, to give you a glimpse of your own infinite nature even within the bounds of your creaturehood — to help you see the god-stuff in the man-stuff. [...]
Now: Dictation … Each probability system has its own set of “blueprints,” clearly defining its freedoms and boundaries, and setting forth the most favorable structures capable of fulfillment.
Give us a moment… Your sense perception, physically speaking, is a result of behavior on the part of organs that seem to you to have no reality outside of their relationship with you. Those organs are themselves composed of atoms and molecules with their own consciousnesses. They have, then, their own states of sensation and cognition. They work for you, allowing you to perceive physical reality.
(Ever since she began dictating Mass Events for Seth, Jane has felt like having book sessions but once a week — on Monday nights — and doing other things in between. So she’s been working on her own James, writing poetry, painting, and helping me out with Seth’s Psyche by doing some of the work I usually do when he’s finished a book: typing sessions for the manuscript, checking my rough notes, rewriting some of them and making suggestions about others. All elements of the interior invisible environment work together, and they form the temporal weather patterns that are exteriorized mental states, presenting you locally and en masse, then, with a physical version of man’s emotional states. [...]
[...] The physical matter of the planet is also composed of literally infinite hordes of consciousnesses — each experiencing its own reality while adding to the overall cooperative venture.
[...] Each individual of each species takes that initial zest and joy of life as its own yardstick. Each individual of whatever species, and each consciousness, whatever its degree, automatically seeks to enhance the quality of life itself—not only for itself but for all of reality as well.
[...] As a result you forget your natural selves, and become involved in a secondary, largely imaginary culture: beliefs that are projected negatively into the future, individually and en masse. [...]
[...] It was indeed a dreamlike world, but a highly charming and vital one, in which dreaming imaginations played rambunctiously with all the probabilities entailed in this new venture: imagining the various forms of language and communication possible, spinning great dream tales of future civilizations replete with their own built-in histories—building, because they were now allied with time, mental edifices that automatically created pasts as well as futures.
These ancient dreams were shared to some extent by each consciousness that was embarked upon the earthly venture, so that creatures and environment together formed great environmental realities. [...]
[...] The only answer is to realize that you form physical events, individually and en masse. And as I have said, time and time again, you form the physical reality that you know. [...]
[...] You create the accidents. You create the triumphs. Now, each of you create the ambiguous universe that you live in, and you project your ideas of reality upon it. [...]
[...] You forget there are problems you must work through, and that in the struggle to create further creativity results. [...] You have your own way. [...] Also, remember your own childlike self and the two of you, when you think of your son, imagine what you were like at that age and how difficult it was to communicate to your parents. [...]
[...] When you are a parent it is impossible for you to completely remember your own childhood or to understand the feelings of consciousness that are growing at that time. Now, as a parent, your chore is to train a consciousness to manipulate in physical reality. The consciousness, by that time, far more free than your own and you are quite jealous of their spontaneity and of their inner understanding. [...]
The fact is that each of you create your own physical reality; and en masse, you create both the glories and the terrors that exist within your earthly experience. [...] You have grown sophisticated enough to realize that the Devil is a projection of your own psyche, but you have not grown wise enough to learn how to use your creativity constructively.
[...] Seth once humorously commented that his way of speaking was actually due to his own “cosmopolitan background,” acquired through many lifetimes. Jane and I think it is simply individual, and that it invokes various responses in people according to their own ethnic and emotional backgrounds.
This is not to say that other realities do not exist. [...] To write this book — and in most of my communications with Ruburt — I adopt from my own bank of past personalities those characteristics that seem appropriate. [...] Our existence seems strange to you only because you do not realize the true potentials of personality, and you are hypnotized by your own limited concepts.
Consciousness creates form. [...] It is only because you are so busily concerned with daily matters that you do not realize that there is a portion of you who knows that its own powers are far superior to those shown by the ordinary self.
[...] Here, I wish to make it clear that [“Unknown” Reality] will initiate a journey in which it may seem that the familiar is left far behind. Yet when I am finished, I hope you will discover that the known reality is even more precious, more ‘real,’ because you will find it illuminated both within and without by the rich fabric of an ‘unknown’ reality now seen emerging from the most intimate portions of daily life…. Your concepts of personhood are now limiting you personally and en masse, and yet your religions, metaphysics, histories, and even your sciences are hinged upon your ideas of who and what you are. Your psychologies do not explain your own reality to you. [...] Your religions do not explain your greater reality, and your sciences leave you just as ignorant about the nature of the universe in which you dwell.
“In Seth Speaks I tried to describe certain extensions of your own reality in terms that my readers could understand. In The Nature of Personal Reality, I tried to extend the boundaries of individual existence as it is usually experienced … to give the reader hints that would increase practical, spiritual and physical enjoyment and fulfillment in daily life. [...] In ‘Unknown’ Reality I went further, showing how the experiences of the psyche splash outward into the daylight, so to speak. [...] ‘Unknown’ Reality required much more work on Joseph’s part, and that additional effort in itself was a demonstration that the psyche’s events are very difficult to pin down in time. [...]

Apropos of such concepts, I’ll close these introductory notes by quoting from a personal session Seth gave for Jane and me, in which he reiterates the importance of the individual and the pursuit of the ideal. Seth initiated the following passages by talking to me about “the safe universe” that each person can create, and live within. [...]
“These institutions and disciplines are composed of individuals, each restrained by limiting ideas about their own private reality; and so it is with private reality that we will begin and always return. [...] The ideas in this book are meant to expand the private reality of each reader. [...]
[...] I am telling you that you form your own reality once again, and this includes the physical weather — which is the result, en masse, of your individual reactions.
Many individuals are completely blind to their own beliefs about themselves, and the nature of reality. Your own conscious thoughts will give you excellent clues. [...]
[...] The normal individual felt that he had best leave such areas alone, so in cutting off these portions of the self, barriers were also set up against the joy of the inner spontaneous self. People felt divorced from the core of their own reality.
You form the fabric of your experience through your own beliefs and expectations. These personal ideas about yourself and the nature of reality will affect your thoughts and emotions. You take your beliefs about reality as truth, and often do not question them. [...]
[...] (Long pause.) Future probabilities are worked out there also so that individually and en masse the species decides upon its probable future. There is a feeling, held by many, that a study of dream reality will lead you further away from the world you know. [...]
There are jet travelers and those who have never seen a train, so your own system of reality contains vast contrasts. The dream state, however, involves you with a kind of communication that is not physically practical, for there (intently) no man or woman is caught without a given role; no individual’s ideas in the dream state are limited by his or her cultural background, or physical experience.
Give us a moment … Your dream experience represents a pivotal reality, like the center of a wheel. [...] The unknown reality is there presented to your view, and there is no biological, mental, or psychic reason why you cannot learn to use and understand your own dreaming reality.
Here, however, the “reflections” do indeed speak, and take their own form. In a certain sense they are freewheeling, in that they have their own kind of reality. [...]
[...] Particularly when I consider the “news” on the typical front page of the typical daily newspaper: All too accurately the “stories” of war, pollution, corruption, and poverty and crime show just how little we human beings know or understand ourselves at this time—and how far we have to go, individually and en masse. As the years have passed, I’ve come to trust more and more my own insights into our behavior as a species within the framework of a nature that I believe our kind has co-created with every other species on the planet (to confine my theme to just our immediate environment for the moment). [...]
[...] Or that of members of my own family? What part do I play, and have yet to play, in Jane’s redemption—as well as my own—and on what level or levels? When did the two of us make our own pacts in Framework 2 (or other frameworks), and how will they work out in Framework 1? But it’s even possible that all together Marie, Jane, her grandfather, and I set up the original situation before the physical births of any of us—and in some probable reality (if not in this one) we did do just that! [...]
[...] I’m noting, then, that we can analyze something right out of our own reality by ultimately declaring it to be impossible—when actually it, and other versions of it, continue to exist in related probable realities.)
I think the beliefs the three of us hold are very creative ones; we accept them on that basis; they are as good “proofs” as we can currently get, and offer their own answers by sparking us into new ways of trying to make sense out of our reality. [...] Not even when I play around with his ideas relative to quantum theory can such proof be found—yet I let Jane’s “amazingly strong” will be the measuring and observing device that automatically causes “waves” of knowing or consciousness—in Framework 2, for example—to coalesce into the “particles” that make up the physical forms she perceives as her reality in Framework 1, either psychically from a distance or right here.
[...] So there have been other species of mankind beside your own, each handling physical data in its own way. [...] Even those paths are latent or secondary, however, within your own private and mass experience. They reside within you, presenting you with alternate realities7 that you may or may not choose privately or en masse, as you prefer.
In some of their own private dreams, many of my readers will have discovered a reality quite as vivid as the normal one, and sometimes more so. [...] In systems different from your own, there are realities in which physical organisms are activated after what would seem to you to be centuries of inactivity12 — again, when the conditions are right. To some extent your own life-and-death cycles are simply another aspect of the hibernation principle as you understand it. Your own consciousness leaves the body almost in the same way that messages leap the nerve ends.13 The consciousness is not destroyed in the meantime.
All of the probabilities practically possible in human development are therefore present to some extent or another in each individual. [...] Those directions have brought forth a reality unique in its own fashion. [...]
Now the physical organism as such is capable of that kind of reality system. It is not better or worse than your own. [...] In the physical state, in what you would call the waking state, these individuals slept. [...]
The cell is individual, and struggles for rightful survival. Yet its time is limited, and the body’s survival is dependent upon the cell’s innate wisdom: The cell must die finally for the body to survive, and only by dying can the cell further its own development, and therefore insure its own greater survival. [...]
[...] In order to develop his own kind of individualized awareness, man had to consciously ignore for a while his own place within the structure of the earth. [...]
Even when you lost sight — as you knew you would — of those deep connections, they would continue to operate until, in its own way, man’s consciousness could rediscover the knowledge and put it to use — deliberately and willfully, thereby bringing that consciousness to flower. In your terms this would represent a great leap, for the egotistically aware individual would fully comprehend unconscious knowledge and act on his own, out of choice. [...]
The physical universe serves then as a threshold for probabilities, and all possible species find their greatest fulfillment within that system, each of them neurologically tuned into their own reality and their own “time.” [...]
Until you are honest with yourself and know yourself and become consciously aware of yourself you cannot honestly relate with others for you project upon them your own fears and your own prejudice, and you cannot afford to help them because you have too many insecurities within yourself. Now, you form the physical reality that you know, individually and en masse, and to change the world that you know you must change your thoughts and to change them you must become consciously aware of what you tell yourself is true every moment of the day for that is your reality, and that is what you project outward. [...]
[...] They also imply the feelings of love and acceptance that are buried beneath your own fears, and those that you are terrified of expressing in physical reality. [...]
[...] According to your terms, God never would have created any creature or any reality or any universe. [...]
[...] I humbly submit that somehow, somewhere, there are connections, intuitions, whispers and shouts and facts that proclaim our greater reality’s depth and being, its independence of our ordinary conscious ideas of space and time. More and more, but especially since Jane’s death on September 5, 1984, I have tried to be open to those fascinating and unending interrelationships we create individually and en masse and so live with.
Jane and I were very surprised at the initial reception of The Seth Material, then Seth Speaks and Personal Reality (our shortened terminology for those first two Seth-dictated books.) Since we had no experience with “fan mail,” for example, we had no expectations, but as the Seth titles and Jane’s own books were published she came to spend many a weekend answering that most welcome mail. [...] How interesting to see that each one of us was indeed creating our personal reality within the overall reality of the universe that all of us were also creating, uniting all—everything—in complicated fashions far beyond our ordinarily accepted understanding. [...]
[...] Jane was living her challenges just like each one of us does, and her efforts were inextricably bound up with the world even as, I was sure, we were creating our human versions of the earth and its own reality. This taught us that even with Jane’s talents there was more, always more, to create and to learn from. [...]
[...] Or—yes—even religion: a subject I would like to explore in depth if ever I can create the several years of camouflage time necessary to do so. So even if Seth did help, still Jane chose to live her own life within the face and force of her own very creative present personality. Seth did offer insights, excellent ones of certain very creative depths that we more than welcomed, while all the time being quite aware, I think, that the beautiful young woman through whom he spoke—who let him speak—had her own agenda at the same time. And even though we agreed with Seth’s reincarnational material involving the three of us, and our families, still it was also intensely personal for my wife in this life that she go her own way.
