LETTER TO ROB AND JANE (FROM HENRY N. WILLIAMS [HAL])

(Slowly:) He was aware, however, of the universe through William James’s world view. [...] As you might dial a program on a television set, Ruburt tuned in to the view of reality now held in the mind of William James. [...]

[...] Another is my own longtime interest in the American psychologist and philosopher, William James [1842–1910]; he wrote the classic The Varieties of Religious Experience.³ A third is a letter received last week from a Jungian psychologist who had been inspired by Seth’s material on the Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist, Carl Jung [1875–1961], in Chapter 13 of Seth Speaks. (We were discussing the letter and half-facetiously wondering whether Seth might respond in any way, when Jane suddenly told me that she was picking up material on the “essence” of William James. [...]

[...] This idea also came back, reading a book on William James Peggy G. gave me for Xmas—his attitudes and mine so often seem similar—that he was determined to be daring, press ahead no matter what, explore consciousness—while at the same time being attracted to safety, disliking controversy, wanting peace, etc. [...]

LETTER TO DOCTOR HENRY N. WILLIAMS

Now: Few people would see any connection between William James and Scott Nearing, and yet both were in their own ways peculiarly concerned with “the American soul.” [...]

Nearing was born into the world just left by James, and he saw the industrial developments that at one time William James had anticipated with such vigor and optimism.

(Over the weekend—beginning Friday evening—we were visited by Hal Williams and Rusty Carnarius, from Lancaster, PA. [...]

[...] (Long pause.) Your massage today, for example (after Hal Williams), was an excellent translation of love and comfort, felt directly at one level of your own being, to the level within Ruburt where it was most needed. [...]

That James however is, of course, as he says the William James that he was —and yet is no more the same William James, as the child and the adult are one person and yet are not. [...]

(Yesterday we received from Hal Williams of Lancaster, PA, three medications he had promised to send: a baby cream, a calindula flower extract for use on Jane’s decubiti, and a powder—also I believe based on the calindula—for her to take at 12 hour intervals for blue fingers, if any. [...]

(Ican add later that this is the only session in the two volumes of “Unknown” Reality to be witnessed by someone other than myself: Our visitor was a young man I’ll call William Petrosky. [...]

(Leaning forward, amused:) I will call you William, and you cannot say that I have not used your name.

(Louder:) Now you may take a break — and (again humorously) I will return, William.

[...] My own interest in art and Rob’s appreciation of Cézanne’s works helped trigger the Cézanne book, for example; and my own curiosity about William James and Rob’s appreciation of his work helped bring about the James manuscript.
