(To conclude the whole episode I’d like to illuminate, from two additional angles, Jane’s feelings and concerns about needing the understanding of others:

(Seth continued:) He also began to see two poles in society one highly conventional and closed, in which he would appear as a charlatan; and another, yearning but gullible, willing to believe anything if only it offered hope, in which his activities would be misinterpreted, and to him [would be] fraudulent … There was a middle ground that he would have to make for himself … to make a bridge to those intellectuals who doubted, and yet maintain some freedom and spontaneity in order to reach those at the other end. (We could make many interpretations of “The number two.” My personal idea is that “The number two” refers to the fact that two items comprise the test object. [...] “Two people” is also open to many interpretations. [...]

[...] More than anything else, I was interested in seeing if Jane could distinguish that the test involved two objects. I placed the cards between two pieces of Bristol board, then sealed them in the usual double envelopes.
