[...] As we waited Jane said several times that she felt “a sense of reassurance” from Seth, that he was organizing some kind of material or program for her because of her physical situation. [...] Finally, as I began to write these few notes, Seth came through:)

(“Thank you, Seth.”

(In the opening notes for the 711th session, I referred to Seth’s deliveries in ESP class on the previous evening, October 8, 1974. [...] Seth talked about many things, but his remarks here, as I’ve put them together, mainly concerned a subject he’d first discussed with members of class just a week ago [on October 1]¹ — the “city” they could start building in their individual and collective dream states:)

2. Seth didn’t quote Jane’s little poem exactly from 26 years ago, but paraphrased it. [...] Once again in an early work we see clear signs of the Seth material to come (in 1963). [...]

[...] When Ruburt (as Seth calls Jane) was a young girl he wrote a poem in which he declares:

(In that class session Seth had much more to say about the dream city. [...]

(Although this is a private session that Jane and I are filing separately from “regular” material, we’re also presenting it in Mass Events because of the many insights Seth offers into individual and mass events in general, and into our personal realities in particular. In fact, without those qualities of ours that Seth touches upon this evening, I doubt that the Seth books — indeed, even the sessions themselves — would exist. So in that sense this session contains more of those insights into the how and why of the Seth material that we’re always searching for. [...]

[...] “But right now I’m just waiting,” she said impatiently at 9:40, after we’d been ready for Seth to come through since 9:25. [...] I want to be Seth or myself — one thing or the other, maybe….”

[...] “Seth’s around, I can tell. [...] It’s as though Seth’s going to have a hard time explaining them.”)

1. In several of the sessions he delivered in 1970–71 for Seth Speaks, Seth explained how atoms and molecules phase in and out of our physical system. [...]

3. According to Seth, then, in one probability I failed to survive the operation I underwent for appendicitis in this reality when I was 11 years old. [...] It’s interesting to note that Seth says I was a pilot, and hence an officer, in that probability. [...]

5. Seth’s concept of the moment point is implicit in his material as I quote it in Note 1 for this session. Also see the 514th session in Chapter 2 of Seth Speaks, and the 668th session in Chapter 19 of Personal Reality.

(Seth could have gone on for hours, Jane said. [...] She continued, that it was because the same intense focus was partially used in the session tonight as in the last two sessions; Seth didn’t want her to overdo it, just to get used to it. Jane didn’t hear Seth tell her this within; she merely “got” the information.

[...] As Seth left, Jane said, she got from him that the particular trance he was discussing tonight could, or would, be used in sessions; it would let Seth come through “stronger,” though Jane then questioned the use of this word, and said “immediate” might be a better one.

(“Good evening, Seth.”)

[...] I was yawning, and Seth came through briefly and humorously:)

(10:31 P.M. Seth’s last remark, which I took to be rather humorous, reflected one of the reasons for Jane’s upset before the session: the conflict she feels between having just book sessions versus obtaining Seth material on at least a few of the other subjects we always have in mind. [...] Seth has given some answers in a couple of sessions, and we want more. [...]

1. Seth’s earliest material on EE (electromagnetic energy) units came through in September and October of 1967; in the Appendix of The Seth Material, see the excerpts Jane presented from sessions 504 through 506. Then in Chapter 20 of Seth Speaks, see Session 581 for April 14, 1971.

[...] Her manner was both funny and understandably sharp when I asked her if she had any questions for Seth tonight. [...]

(“Good evening, Seth.”)

Neither of us knew how such a tremor and slowdown might influence the sessions, for example: Jane hadn’t spoken for Seth in several weeks, so we had yet to find out! I took comfort in remembering her excellent vocal power when delivering the private session for December 3.¹² Her voice is a powerful and dramatic connective among realities for her, charged with energy and emotion whether she’s speaking for herself, for Seth, or speaking or singing in her trance language, Sumari.¹³ That vocal steadiness and power, coming out of someone whose weight hovers around 100 pounds, has always been most reassuring to us. We tried what Seth had suggested many times: After discussing her voice effects we gave Jane gentle suggestions that they could be greatly minimized, then turned our attention away from them. [...]

[...] Jane had responded beautifully to my suggestion when she began dictating Seth’s The Nature of the Psyche: I’d playfully told her at suppertime that she was going to start a new Seth book in the session which was due that evening—and three hours later [...] Although she was writing her own Psychic Politics while I worked on the notes for “Unknown” Reality, she was between Seth books, and I wanted her to have one in progress so that it “could underlie her daily life like a foundation.” [...]

[...] As with her speaking for Seth, her greatest power and drama in singing was engendered in class. For the most part in our regular, private, and book sessions, Seth speaks to me with a quieter, businesslike energy; I always feel his vigor and humor, but he isn’t nearly as loud or quick or boisterous as he was in class. Jane was obviously sensitive to the infusion of energy from 30 or more people during those gatherings, and through her Seth responded masterfully. [...]

Our program of discussing Seth’s material, as well as our own ideas—which included our taping suggestions for Jane to listen to daily—had come out of those sessions for December 1 and 3. Obviously, we were trying to encourage Framework 2 activity. [...] “Rob and Seth started us on a new program and though we’ve hardly begun, I do feel some relieved more peaceful,” she typed in part on the morning of the 5th as she sat at her new low table, “yesterday i felt the place clicking about me. [...]

But that simple statement also means that our dream work relative to Jane’s challenges has often been powerfully abetted by Seth in many of the 347 completely private and 159 partially private sessions he’s given us since November 1965. Much of the fascinating and informative material in which Seth discussed various aspects of Jane’s symptoms is generalized enough for publication, and could help others, but because of its very intense personal connotations it’s a project we haven’t started yet. (Not that I haven’t presented excerpts from a few of those sessions in other Seth books.)

The quotation from Seth just presented will certainly lead the reader to wonder about additional sessions we may have acquired from him since April 16, and from Jane since April 20 (see the essays for those dates). The answer is that we’ve held 13 more sessions—4 of them given by Jane “herself,” and 9 by Seth speaking through her. The last session in that baker’s dozen was delivered by Seth on June 7. Most of the sessions are rather short, and not all of them are strictly personal. [...]

[...] In his session for April 16 (see the essay for the same date), Seth told us that on several occasions Jane’s thyroid gland has “repaired itself,” but we don’t think that has fully happened yet this time. In a recent private session (for May 10) Seth told us: “The gland is activating itself by itself—off and on, so to speak, giving a sputtering effect. [...]

Even if those sessions can’t be quoted in these essays because of the obvious space limitations, I can note that Jane and Seth each continued to develop the themes already laid down in the sessions that have been presented. What they really signify for the long term is (as I wrote in the essay for April 16) a continuing program of intense study for Jane and me—and yes, for Seth, too—as we seek to better understand our chosen commitments in our present physical lives. [...]

(The monk mentioned by Seth refers to our friend Father Martin, who is mentioned in the 212th session. Apropos of this, Jane now said she remembered that Seth’s use of the word missionary did set up her own chain of association involving Father Martin. She said Seth put her back on the right track by mentioning this.

(Seth gave data on Peggy’s trip in the 214th and the 215th sessions, December 6 and 8. He also gave some preliminary data on the trip during an unscheduled session held on December 3; Peggy took a copy of these predictions with her to Washington. Seth listed nine predictions and Peggy verified three of them. Seth gave them in Peggy’s presence; his score in the two sessions held while she was in Washington was much better.

(Jane now smiled as Seth began to consider the theories of both men. Before the session she had hoped Seth would discuss them. [...]

(Seth did not elaborate on the test envelope impressions, so what follows are our own interpretations. For his own part, Seth was too eager to get on with his discussion of Priestley’s book, it developed.

(Last night in the mail I found Carol Steiner’s Ph.D. thesis on the Seth material, which she’d promised in November. [...] Quite interesting, but as I told Jane, it reminded me of just what a task it is to start at the beginning and present an explanation of the Seth material. [...]

[...] I told her that Seth didn’t go into our questions about his material in yesterday’s session, concerning changing the past from the present, nor did he comment on Carol Steiner’s Ph.D. thesis on the Seth material. [...]

[...] Seth has mentioned this acclimatization of the eye muscles. [...]

(I did remind Jane that in yesterday’s session Seth hadn’t addressed the question I’d mentioned to her at lunch time — why were we such extremists in our behavior, considering the severity of the symptoms, and so forth? [...]

(Nor, evidently, is Seth referring to the two adults sitting in on the class the day the tape was played. [...] This interpretation results in one man and one woman hearing the tape, versus Seth’s mentioning of two men and a woman.)

[...] Seth had delivered an excellent lecture to the class, in two parts. [...]

[...] Pat did visit us on the 15th, and confirmed much of Seth’s data given here. [...]

(Seth, it seemed, occupied a space about five feet high—a “blob” of space into which I could step, just at the limit of Jane’s reach, without disturbing him or without Jane sensing me as a separate entity within Seth’s province. Seth’s presence lingered into the evening as the three of us talked.

(“Good evening, Seth.”)

[...] Seth came through rather stronger than usual, and somewhat rapidly in a louder voice. [...]

(“Good night, Seth.”

[...] This marked the end of the session for all practical purposes as far as Seth was concerned. Jane and I made the connections we could and did not ask Seth to elaborate.

[...] Throughout the data Seth keeps attempting to refine this shape or block image, with some success. [...] It seems Seth had a correct impression.

[...] Jane, or Seth, getting at the idea of photograph again. [...] I dated and initialed the one not used in the envelope experiment; this gives an RB and a date, but I doubt if this is what Seth is getting at here.

(“Good evening, Seth.”)

So I am the Seth that is beyond the Seth that you know. And in me the knowledge and vitality of that Seth still rings. In your terms, I am a future Seth. [...]

(Notes by Rob: Some of Seth’s voice effects were very loud. I heard Seth rather clearly through 2 closed doors after I had retired. [...]

(The session is included in the regular series [Session 494] because of the voice effects; the fact that both Seth and his entity spoke; some new ideas from both entities; and because no regular session was held the next day, Wednesday, July 16. [...]

[...] On July 17, Theodore purchased the painting of Bega as designated by Seth. [...]

(This morning while I was at work, John Bradley stopped by briefly while on a hurried business trip to give Jane some information relating to a prediction of a narcotics scandal that Seth had predicted for Elmira in the 63rd session, of June 17. [...] Seth stated the scandal was due within three months.

(This evening after supper, while busy with other material, Jane received the thought that it was time to begin work on Book One of The Seth Material, a project we had discussed sometime before vacation. [...] She came to the studio to tell me this, and that she also received the thought, evidently from Seth, that Donald Wollheim, her editor at Ace Books, could or would write the introduction for Book One.

(In the 68th session Seth mentioned a rowboat with a symbol. [...] His acquaintance wore a cap with an anchor symbol on it, although we do not regard this as being what Seth referred to.

(Regarding Seth’s statement about a string of shells, the only association with shells that Bill recalls is that shell ashtrays were used at the party. He does not think this is what Seth referred to.

At the time of the “Idea Construction” experience, the Seth sessions themselves were undreamed of, of course. So while this book is devoted to Seth’s theories on the nature of dreams and his instructions on their use, it is not meant to be a definitive statement. Seth continues to deliver material on dreams, along with other subjects. Those of you who want a more general idea of Seth’s views can refer to The Seth Material. Here, I’ll give the material on dreams as it was given to us in succeeding sessions — particularly in the early part of the book. This automatically presents the material in order, preserving the sense of continuity, and serves as a progressive, subjective journal of dream experiences as Rob and I, and later my students, followed Seth’s suggestions. This method of presentation also gives the reader a built-in opportunity to try the experiments for himself, just as Seth gave them to us as we went along.

[...] Even when I wrote The Seth Material, I didn’t clearly understand why it happened or connect it in any way with my previous life or beliefs. [...]

In other words, my poetry finally revealed to me my state of mind before “Idea Construction” and Seth. [...]

[...] I wrote the following poem which is mentioned later by Seth as an indication of the inner knowledge that was almost ready to burst into consciousness.

(The flood referred to by Seth took place on June 23, 1972. [...] Jane and I were involved in it, and Seth discussed our experiences in Personal Reality; see Chapter 1, for instance.

4. Seth’s material here reminded me of a remark he made in the 504th session, which is presented in the Appendix of The Seth Material; he was discussing the perceptions of the fetus as mediated by electromagnetic energy (EE) units: “Cells are not just responsive to light because this is the order of things, but because an emotional desire to perceive light is present.”

[...] Of course we knew what Seth had suggested during last Wednesday’s session, and his advice was valuable; at the same time we’d been strongly inclined to make the purchase after looking at the house anew that Wednesday afternoon. [...]

(In tonight’s relatively brief session Seth discussed our house adventures in quite a personal way, yet also passed along some related concepts of a more general nature. [...]

[...] She said the two-minute pause at the start of the delivery took place because she was consciously “hung up” over how Seth was going to begin Chapter Five. She also realized that if she “just sat there,” Seth would do okay on his own.

(Jane had a “memory,” now, of giving part of Seth’s data from the bookcase area, of seeing the living room from a different viewpoint. [...] She was much intrigued by the idea of being out-of-body, and able to watch herself give material for Seth.

(“At what, Seth?”)

(Jane had a lot of images while Seth was speaking. [...]

(Then I also took down Jane’s own letter to contributors, which was obviously triggered by Seth’s. She dictated this quite as easily as Seth had done his own. [...]

[...] I also told Jane I’d like something from Seth that Maude can send to contributors.

(“Good afternoon, Seth.”)

[...] Jane said she thought that right away Seth was starting to answer my question of yesterday — not the portion about radiation and why that phenomenon is too strong for us to bear, but the part about the consciousness embodied in cancer, say, which is also too much for us much of the time. [...]

[...] Seth came through several times, delivering beautifully organized little dissertations to Dr. Guy on how he might relax enough to allow the psychic signs that he’s so interested in to come through. [...] We didn’t use one either, and so for the first time in a long while Seth’s material disappeared as rapidly as it was given—an odd experience for us. Seth also discussed with Dr. Guy the practice of, and the motivations behind, the art of magic. And in return for Seth speaking, Dr. Guy staged his own little magic show for Jane and me—to our amazement and intense interest—as the three of us sat around the living-room table.

As Jane commented afterward, LeRoy Guy said not a single word to us about his reaction to Seth, although I’d watched him pay the same rapt attention to that personality as had many others. [...] For that matter, we hadn’t even asked him exactly what Dr. Camper wanted him to find out about Jane and Seth—or even me. [...]
