(The above paragraph brings to mind the fact that Seth discussed a dream of Bill Macdonnel’s during the 84th session; Bill witnessed the session, and afterwards told us he had no conscious memory of the dream, which had taken place a few days before the session according to Seth. Yet Seth analyzed the symbolic content of the dream rather thoroughly, saying it was an important one for Bill since it bore upon his home and professional life. [...]
[...] She said Seth had felt no apparent urge to elaborate on any of his answers to my questions. [...] She said she sensed a slight irritation on Seth’s part when I asked if anybody else had listened to the tape with Dr. Instream; it was as though Seth could get the information to answer the question, but didn’t feel inclined to so exert himself.
(Seth has discussed dreams to some extent in many sessions; too many to list here. [...] For a few examples of the manner in which Seth interprets dreams, see the 85th, 93rd and 94th sessions. [...]
[...] Actually the Frank Watts personality was in the process of being superseded by Seth then, and on the next page Seth announced his presence by name. [...]
(My first question asked Seth for more data about the two horizontal lines. [...] [Jane gestures.] It will be remembered that when Seth gave this data the first time, Jane held the envelope to her forehead with its long dimensions horizontal to the floor. [...] Seth elaborates a bit here now, although Jane now sat holding the envelope in her lap, and with its short dimensions parallel to the floor.
(A question had occurred to me as Seth spoke and I voiced it now: Were any of the results of our experimental data, involving either Dr. Instream or our own envelopes, the result of unsuspected projections on Jane’s part? Seth refers to the question later in the session.
[...] Provided Seth gives this data in our terms in such cases. We wondered if by horizontal Seth, or Jane, could possibly mean parallel, since the leaves are quite parallel to each other on the Bristol.
[...] Seth seems to be quite insistent upon the subject of writing or a note, so they may be valid. [...] Jane considers it possible that here Seth is getting at the idea of a folded note or card being attached to the plant when Miss Callahan received it as a gift. [...]
(The questions I referred to concern the fact that once in The Seth Material and nine times in Seth Speaks, by my count, Seth spoke of Atlantis as being in our historical past. [...] Seth’s theory of simultaneous time, which can encompass the notion of future probabilities projected backward into an apparent past, for instance, leaves great leeway for the interpretation of events or questions, however, and makes the idea of contradiction posed by an Atlantis in the past and one in the future too simple as an explanation. At any given “time,” depending on whatever information he’s given previously, Jane could just as easily quote Seth as placing Atlantis in our historic past, or in a probable past, present, or future — or all four “places” at once, for that matter. [...]
(I read to Jane the few paragraphs of material Seth had given on Atlantis. [...] I’ll have to admit that we cringe a bit when Seth talks about cultish concepts like Atlantis. [...] From these remarks it’s easy to see that we feel much more comfortable with the ideas about Atlantis that Seth advanced in this session. [...]
[...] Seth has connected himself with Atlantis only once, but he did so very definitely; from the 588th session for Chapter 22 of Seth Speaks: “I was … born in Atlantis.” [...]
(After this evening’s session, however, we decided we’d like to know why in Seth’s view Atlantis had moved from its long, if uneasy residence in our “historical past” forward into a future probable reality. [...] By then, Seth had been through with “Unknown” Reality for three weeks. [...]
(Before the session Jane read over the letter from D. R. Moorcroft, the professor of physics who’d written her such a fine letter on April 3. She divided the letter into questions; Seth may discuss some of them tonight. [...] Seth does refer to the first question Jane had noted, and that material is also presented as the 849th session, as well as being included here.
(What I’m trying to do is to let the information Seth has given in the last several deleted sessions for me, starting with that for April 4, sink in so that I can achieve a synthesis of it all both consciously and unconsciously. I think the material is very perceptive, and that I may have begun achieving some kind of equanimity between the two men, or opposing sets of belief, that Seth so aptly described in the deleted session for April l8. [...]
[...] Our main goal in wanting a home for the Seth material—or for a lifework, really—is one of preservation for future use. We don’t think that Yale can have much of an idea of what’s involved with Jane’s abilities, or the subject matter of the Seth material. [...]
(“Good night, Seth.” [...] After supper she’d felt Seth material on his book, the latter, and personal stuff, she said—all before the call from Yale. [...]
(As it was, Seth spoke very briefly to Timothy Foote at about 3:00 PM, discussing some remarks all of us had been making about Freudian psychology. [...] At the time I thought the brief appearance a little odd, but when it developed that Timothy Foote wouldn’t be staying for supper, as we had planned, Seth’s appearance made good sense.
(Some time later Jane told me she picked up that when Seth spoke Timothy was suspicious—“Seth would speak now, you see, in order to make an impression,” etc.
[...] After the call I read Seth’s last sentence to Jane. Seth then finished it:)
(Timothy Foote told Jane he would review Seth Speaks for the magazine. [...]
(Actually, the affair is a perfect example of much of the material Seth has been going into in his latest book on the mass culture and mind. To Jane and me, it seemed as if his material was being enacted in real life as the ideal demonstration of Seth’s material. [...] We also think that these books-to-come will not manage to penetrate the forces behind the phenomenon nearly as well as Seth could, but that Seth won’t be carrying out such a project, either.
(I asked that Seth comment on my tooth-extraction hang-ups—involving the attendant soreness and my reactions to the whole affair—as well as the mouth-breathing difficulty. [...]
(Jane wanted Seth to discuss her own progress—which continues, if too slowly for her. [...]
(We also speculated that Seth might refer to what may be called the “Jonestown Affair,” or something like it. [...]
(It will be remembered that Seth stated an art gallery experience was in the cards for Jane many sessions ago—back somewhere in the beginning sessions. At the time Seth also said that had we settled in Miami, Florida, as we considered doing a few years ago, Jane would have worked in a gallery there. [...]
[...] She said that Seth had fooled her, that after drinking the wine and relaxing because of it during last break, she realized Seth wanted her to.
(Because she had been upset by the gallery situation, Jane at this point wished aloud that Seth could help her out as to what the future held; this is something we have scrupulously refrained from doing in any serious way, yet this time we sincerely felt we could use all the help we could get. Even so, we made no formal requests of Seth during break. [...]
[...] What I meant of course was that if Thomas Voghler and Tom Roberts were friends, and if Seth now knew Tom Roberts, then Seth would also know Thomas Voghler, or at least of him.)
(Jane thought Seth would speak if a session were held, but this did not prove to be the case. However at 8:55 Jane got flashes from Seth that perhaps Seth was educating other personalities on midplanes to contact personalities on our plane.
[...] Jane said she had the feeling that “someone” other than Seth looked out through her eyes, not in the way Seth does. [...] Jane however was quite aware of a subjective difference, other than Seth, but couldn’t explain how she knew this.
[...] Seth’s entity spoke instead, though. Jane sat quite still for some few moments; when I noticed her seeming to grope for words, soundlessly moving her lips, I felt Seth’s entity would give the session. [...]
(Note that this is the first time that Seth’s larger entity has spoken about personal matters. Jane said she used “they” in talking about Seth and his entity, then said that perhaps “there are more than the two of them.”)
“Here Seth seemed to telescope the two events into one, “Jane wrote, “or refer to them together, as if the distinction didn’t exist for him…. Seth may be implying that the ascension was the main issue in the Christ story, rather than the resurrection, or telling us that the two events are so intertwined thematically as to be treated as one.” Since we do not arbitrarily change Seth’s copy, his reference here to the ascension rather than the resurrection, and a similar one that soon follows, stand as they were given. [...]
(Last Monday evening Seth gave a very short private session for Jane; it turned out to consist of just one page of double-spaced typewritten information. During the session Seth said that he was “preparing some special material for Ruburt,” but except for the excellent relaxation effects Jane has experienced since then, we have yet to learn what else may be involved.
1. I added “[resurrection and]” to Seth’s passage because Jane told me that according to ordinary teaching Christ’s resurrection from the dead took place on Easter Sunday, the third day following his crucifixion (on Friday), while his ascension into heaven transpired at an indefinite later time — up to 40 days later, as stated in the writings of St. Luke in the Acts of the Apostles (AA 1:10). As far as we know, Seth’s inference that Christ’s resurrection and ascension took place on the same day is contrary to popular belief.
In the 591st session for Seth Speaks, I noted claims for an earlier date for the origin of the first Gospel, that according to Mark; nevertheless, most authorities still believe that the Gospels were written between A.D. 65 and 110. [...] Sometimes Christ appeared as an apparition — but as Seth commented in a private session: “You could not have a world in which the newly risen dead mixed with the living. [...]
(During the 247th session Seth told Marian that Jimmy’s health was good. Seth devoted much of the 229th session to what he said were tax and money problems involving Jimmy. [...] In a recent session Seth said that probabilities might enter in with this data, but that is all we know. [...] In the 229th session Seth gave a March 15 date in connection with Jimmy’s supposed tax troubles.)
[...] I wondered whether Seth would pick up any impressions connected with Linda, but he confined himself to impressions that originated yesterday as far as Jane and I were concerned. The N and Norcross indicated in pencil on the tracing signifies a blind embossed trademark on the envelope flap, but Seth said nothing about this either.
(In all I asked Seth four questions pertaining to the envelope experiment. [...] First I asked Seth to elaborate on the music data.
(Jane now explained at break that Seth didn’t want her to say transparencies when I asked her to name the object. [...] Since Seth didn’t want her to say transparencies, a compromise emerges in which a connection with the actual envelope object is given.
[...] The stories by Peg Gallagher dealt with the origin of the Seth material, Seth himself, and quotes from various sessions as well as the way the material is gathered, etc. The photos were of Jane and of the painting I did, in oil, of Seth.
(Strictly speaking, these episodes could be called seances, since they were given by Jane herself rather than Seth. [...] We didn’t insist that Seth discuss this material this evening, instead merely saying we had much to learn here.
[...] The painting I’ve done of Seth hangs on an inside wall of our living room. Jane saw Seth’s painting move, intact, to and then through our large center window in the living room.
[...] The series was built around the acceptance of the first book of the Seth material by Prentice-Hall.
[...] I asked if Seth could comment on the fact that F. Fell had canceled, or postponed, the appearance of the paperback edition of Jane’s ESP Power. [...] In the deleted session for October 2, 1972, Seth told us the “paperback will do very well, however.” [...]
(I also asked if Seth would comment upon the postponement by Gallery magazine, this month, of their interview with Jane, scheduled for January 23, a class night. [...]
(As it developed, Seth gave a partial explanation of the Fell affair, and the Gallery material was not mentioned.)
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
[...] In ordinary terms her behavior is an extreme — and I added that when I asked Seth about this, he countered by talking about the extremes of poverty in Africa, say, but he said precious little about Jane per se. [...] I have no plans to resume, for I always ended up feeling that without my pushing, Jane — either with or without Seth — just would never deal with them. [...]
[...] I repeated my old comments that I’d have been more than willing to chuck the whole psychic bit years ago, if she wanted to, for I’d seen signs of trouble way back when she was producing Seth Speaks. [...]
[...] I told her I think the Seth material touches upon those fears, but doesn’t eradicate their emotional content and force. [...]
[...] When Seth began saying that Jane would resume walking in reasonable comfort, I at first believed him, but soon came to not believe him, for I saw no sign of such a change even beginning. [...]
(Several times this morning while we were working Jane mentioned that she was receiving flashes from Seth about a particular subject—the refrigerator in our bathroom. Seth had, she said, just realized this situation and was quite upset.
(Seth’s reference to a tree concerns one I had drawn directly on the kitchen wall, in India ink on the yellow paint. [...] Jane used this fact in protesting to Seth about switching the iceboxes.)
(Jane strongly disliked the idea of the large refrigerator in the kitchen, and actively resisted Seth’s concern with the problem. [...]
(When I picked Jane up after work at the gallery, she told me one of the flashes from Seth was this:)
(In ESP class for April 16, a student asked Seth to comment on “the differences between the male and female [human beings] as we understand them.” Seth’s answer was a long one. [...] [This sometimes happens in class: Seth will elaborate upon book information, or discuss it from a different viewpoint; this in turn makes Jane and me want to see such material used in the book.])
(Without a break Jane went from her Seth trance into another very creative mode of consciousness. [...] Then Jane came through as Sumari once more, but this time she spoke in conversational tones.3 Immediately she was finished, Seth returned:)
All time is simultaneous (Seth told the members of class), and so you are male and female at once.
[...] (And, I can write later, Seth expands his family-of-consciousness material considerably in Session 732, Section 6, Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality.)
(In the 436th session Seth advised caution on Eve’s part in order to forestall or change the probabilities re this future accident. Seth described an older woman, about 35, with whom Eve rides, as possibly being involved in the accident as driver, and named certain days the accident was more likely to take place on. Today Tam Mossman confirmed that Eve does ride to work at Prentice-Hall with a woman fitting Seth’s description, including the age given; he said eve would ride with him on the specified days in order to alter the probabilities.
(Jane, as Seth, paused. Seth doesn’t allude very often to a subject in such a manner, so my curiosity was aroused. I knew Jane wasn’t at her best tonight, but thought it would be nice to get at least an inkling of what Seth was talking about. [...]
(Jane had a call from Tam Mossman at Prentice-Hall today, during which we obtained some confirmation on points made by Seth in a recent session. [...]
[...] This was after she had gone through an auto accident; Seth has told us this accident is in reality two accidents, one involving B. Macdonnel in California, the other a future possible event involving Tam’s girl Eve, in or near New York City. [...]
She’s been most intrigued by Seth’s referrals to the concept of “master events” ever since he gave them in the final session for Chapter 8—preparations, she hoped, for his material this evening. She came to play her own conscious part in those preparations, too: Yesterday she’d received many insights from Seth on “master overlays,” and made notes. She typed some of her information after supper tonight, and I’m presenting this in Note 1, just to show how closely at times the body of the Seth material lies to her “ordinary” consciousness.)
Neither of us had counted the sessions we have for Dreams, but when I made a quick check the next day I was surprised to discover that Jane’s estimate is only two short of the 32 sessions Seth has called book dictation. I’m still busy typing the final manuscript for Mass Events, but we’ve already planned that I’ll be adding several “nonbook” sessions, and excerpts from others, to Dreams when finally I get to concentrate on the production work for it And my own opinion, I explained to Jane, is that Seth is considerably more than halfway through this book, even if we add more extra sessions to it.)
3. I think that Seth’s insight here—regarding “the far more dependable behavior of the other species”—is excellent indeed. [...] (As an example, I doubt if this one will be referred to in the index for Dreams.) But I also think that intuitively we know the truth Seth so briefly expressed here, and that it never has been or ever will be really lost.
(Seth stared at me, so I asked: “What do you think of my dreams of the last two nights?”)
