AM & afternoon: Finish chapter 2 James—“proofread” it.

AM: we get up at 6 so the men can get up to the attic to work through the bedroom closet; R. Reads chapter 2 of James; my body continues its stuff.

(After hanging up, Jane said Callista also mentioned her young son James. In telling me this Jane said Callista had foreseen events concerning James’s death. This was a slip on Jane’s part, for Callista had actually said James’s future.

[...] My eyes worked some better, I typed an hour or so copying the beginning of James; got five or so good new pages; and muscles in head, ears, eyes, neck definitely were relaxing. [...]

[...] Late in August Jane interrupted her work on James to move all of her writing paraphernalia into her new room at the back of the house. [...] Jane, who was to work on James all through September, prepared a presentation for that book so that in the meantime her editor, Tam Mossman, could show it to his associates at Prentice-Hall. [...] Over the telephone three days later, Tam suggested that Jane do a children’s book, or one for “readers of all ages,” based on her dream about Emir;² the next day he called again, this time to give her the delightful news that he’d accepted James for publication.

2. I’ll remind the reader that Jane has already received inspiration and material for two books from her amazingly creative dream state: her novel, The Education of Oversoul Seven, and James. [...]

James. He was James Talbert. [...]

In the AM the dream instantly reminded me of an almost completely different opposite dream, a nightmare that I had just about the time my eye troubles and other difficulties began in earnest: It was in the spring when I was doing James. [...]

Thursday 12:20—What I like about all this is that I FEEL that the head area—which is clearing all day and week—is the basic area in which everything started; even the slowness; and that all of that is in the process of clearing—that, the physical stuff PLUS, this AM the feeling I’m doing stuff at creative inspirational levels too; figured out important stuff about James for example—and I FEEL that my recovery can be easy—automatic—and that it only seems that the “body needs time” etc. [...]

My feelings are ambiguous—should I go along with this, doing nothing otherwise, or try to get some James though I don’t feel like it particularly or get up and walk around? [...]

Important Note: I’ve been following Seth’s instructions fairly well, not completely—and today got more good James on Faith: he mentions the extra-normal or super-normal power again. [...]

(Jane’s writing on William James also developed into a book: The Afterdeath Journal of an American Philosopher. So during Seth’s dictation of this present manuscript, she produced on her own the Cézanne and James books. [...]

[...] Now I can add a third book, James, to the list. [...] So now we’re spending much of our working time checking — and double-checking — the proofs against our carbon copy of the copyedited James manuscript. [...]

[...] In that regard, for example, James was quite correct: certain religious societies interpreted the theme so that it read “evolution of the soul”; but there is no soul in Darwinian theory and hereditary, and certainly none in the environment. [...]
