[...] Nor do I always try to keep material in mind. Instead I’m usually concentrating on recording it, checking with Seth when I’m in doubt about a word, asking that worthy to repeat a phrase when I fall behind in the notes….
(Jane is still writing her book of poetry, Dialogues of the Soul and Mortal Self in Time.1 Last week she taped some of this material. [...]

At the same time, Tam Mossman, Jane’s editor at Prentice-Hall, is trying to find out whether the Dutch edition of Seth Speaks has been published.
[...]
The German-language edition of Seth Speaks was published in Switzerland four months ago [in May], and just three weeks ago we received our first fan letter from that country.
[...]
We expect the same kind of response from those who will seek out the Dutch Seth Speaks. We know the mail from European readers will very gradually increase, just as it did after Jane published The Seth Material in the United States in 1970.)
Later in these notes I also plan to include, as a partial answer to many who have written us on the subject, material Seth gave on animal consciousness; this information came through just three days ago, in the 878th session for September 10. In the meantime I want to tie together Dreams and the last Seth-Jane book, The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events. Seth completed his work on Mass Events about a month ago [on August 15], and a week later I began finishing my notes for it. [...]
(Seth actually began his Preface for this book, Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment, with the next, 881st session, which Jane delivered for him 12 days later [on September 25]. I chose to present this private session first because in it Seth offers certain information about Jane and me that I think applies to all of our work with him, through the session and books, and to our own separate creative lives as well. Especially do I like to interpret his material tonight as meaning that Jane is “a psychic or a mystic,” for to me, at least, this means that in this physical life she’s chosen to penetrate as deeply as she can the depths of reality, or consciousness.
[...] At the same time she’s been extremely inspired and creative recently, working on her own God of Jane and the Introduction for Seth’s Mass Events, turning out many pages of excellent material for those works. [...] In fact, after supper she produced two more pages of notes that she “picked up” from Seth on his new book Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment.
[...] Jane said that her trance was good, that Seth was coming through fine. She had a sense of energy and that the material was beyond her, or coming through her.
(Concerning Jane’s writing, and her use as a basis of it of the Seth material, and what she has learned through personal experience as a foundation.)
We will continue with this material, the main material of the session, at our next session. [...]
They will be fully developed best, easiest, in dealing with this material and through his poetry. [...] He will work out the best way of doing this, for it will be a natural development, an alchemy, resulting from the nature of his own writing talents, which are considerable, his own intuitions, and the material. [...]
Some of our readers, sending us recent books and copies of articles written by scientists working on these subjects, have noted that it must be nice for Jane and me to have concepts that Seth has been discussing for years “corroborated” by the establishment (often we already had the material on file, by the way). But once again irony enters in on my part, for I’m afraid our answer is that in general science isn’t even aware of the existence of the Seth material, notwithstanding the letters of approval and/or encouragement we receive from individual scientists, representing a variety of disciplines. [...] As I wrote to a fan just last week: “No matter what he or she may think of it personally, no reputable scientist is going to publicly espouse a belief in the Seth material. [...]
Some day, for our own amusement—but hardly with the idea of convincing others, let alone influential scientists—I’ll ask Seth to comment upon whatever connections may exist between his ideas and those embedded in quantum mechanics. [...] I think that Jane has little (if any) interest in whether any connections might exist between the Seth material and the mathematical theory of quantum mechanics. [...]
[...] Additionally, Jane could have chosen the present relationship to eventually help her temper her reception of and reaction to the Seth material, making her extra-cautious; this, even though she’d seen to it ahead of time that she would be born with that certain combination of fortitude and innocence necessary for her to press on with her chosen abilities. [...] And Jane’s resolve, her will that, according to Seth, “is amazingly strong” (in Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality, see the 713th session for October 21, 1974), may buttress the understanding and determination of one or more of her counterparts in this life; she may meet (or have met) such an individual; another may live across an ocean, say, with no meeting ever to take place in physical terms.
I’ve written these passages knowing, of course, that many of Seth’s points and our own are at best theories, if very intriguing ones. [...] Whatever their status, Jane and I take heart from the letters sent us by many thousands of readers, who have time and again explained how they put the Seth material to use in very positive physical and mental ways. [...]
[...] So far, Seth has explained six of these. (Several years later, Jane was to list nine such inner senses in Chapter 19 of The Seth Material.) Jane said that upon coming slowly awake from her nap she’d had the very peculiar feeling of ‘growing larger.’ The laughing phrase she used was that she’d felt as ‘big as an elephant.’ Her boundaries of awareness seemed to have expanded. [...]
[...] Her first massive sensations in March [estimated], 1962, were followed by these phenomena in 1963: our York Beach experiences in August; her reception of Idea Construction in September; her massive feelings in October [estimated]; the outline she produced for ESP Power [or The Coming of Seth] as a result of the Idea Construction adventure; and the beginning of these sessions in November, through our trying certain experiments listed in that outline [as Jane explains in Chapter 1 of The Seth Material]. [...]
(In my notes preceding the 39th session for March 30, 1964, I described the first massive state Jane experienced after beginning the Seth sessions. That material contains passages that are of special interest here, and I’ve combined them in these excerpts:)
(In that 39th session, Seth confirmed that Jane had been experimenting with one of the inner senses. [...]
2. Now Seth began a rundown of the roles played by each of the families of consciousness as he’d listed them in the 732nd session. [...] Since Jane had already refreshed her memory of those psychic groupings before the session, and, presumably, would deliver Seth’s material on them in the proper order, I matched up their names with the successive blocks of data given in the session. Perhaps I should have double-checked by asking Seth to rename the families, in order, but I didn’t think it necessary.
(Seth returned at 11:19. [...] This material came through even though we had our first viewing of the “hill house” yesterday; see the notes [added later] at the beginning of tonight’s session. Seth’s information on the Foster Avenue place, and our present and potential relationships with it, was very illuminating. [...]
(Here’s one point brought out in that deleted material: Since Seth had told Jane and me long ago that the three of us belong to the Sumari family of consciousness,4 we were more than curious now when he declared that the woman who presently owns the house on Foster Street is also a Sumari: “[She] added Sumari characteristics of expansiveness.” But to go a step further: According to Seth the house’s previous owner for many years, a male now deceased, had also been Sumari. [...]
1. Naturally, Seth’s material here began to sound very reminiscent of Jane’s and my own Sumari characteristics — especially those concerning the “mystical sense of connection with nature” that each of us feels, and our individual desires “to work in solitude.”
(Seth did give much unexpected material about the brain — and about his own reality, incidentally — but the session turned out to be so long and closely interrelated that I found it very difficult to excerpt; most of the portions I picked out were left hanging, or were too incomplete. Naturally, Seth said what he said from his own viewpoint. I ended up choosing the few quotations gathered together here just to indicate the direction of the information, while hoping that the entire session, with others promised on the subject by Seth, will be published some day.
1. See Seth’s definition of the entity as given in Chapter 5 of The Seth Material.
(Even if beta waves, then, seem to be the “official pulses” of our civilization [to use Seth’s phrase from a session that will be quoted in part below], still Jane and I wonder: When aren’t we actually in a state of altered consciousness? [...] But more than this, why not call all actions of the brain “altered” when compared to Seth’s concept of the individual personality’s whole self or entity?1
[...] Nor at this time, given the minimum premise that Jane’s speaking for Seth constitutes any indication of “paranormal” activity, do we think that her performance could be identified as such per se on the graphs of her brain waves. [...] Presumably, however, when speaking for Seth, Jane would show definite changes in all frequency areas in both hemispheres, with the theta and delta ranges altered the most. [...]
(During her mid-morning exercise-and-rest break today, I asked Jane if she had any idea why Seth had come through with the material he’d given us in last Monday evening’s session. [...] Then: “Well, I don’t tell you everything, but for some time now I’ve known Seth gives what I call ‘fill-in’ sessions, or ‘floating material’— stuff he could give any time. [...] They’re like ‘maintenance sessions.’ It’s good material, all right, but. [...]
[...] [Checking later, I found that she’d given me the same answer about certain Seth material in Mass Events.]
[...] There are certain sessions I’ve labelled ‘fill-in’ sessions in my mind for some time now, or thought of them as covering ‘floating material.’ They aren’t book sessions or specifically personal ones. [...] Like maintenance sessions, but usually by discussing past material — connecting it with the present [‘connective sessions’ is more like it] — while not necessarily adding new thrust. [...]
(“I think such connective sessions happen between book sessions, for a change of pace — where material doesn’t have to fit a more concentrated overall book focus. [...]
[...] Instead my companion was assigned this job: Each day his task was to climb back out the window with perhaps three looseleaf volumes of the Seth material tucked under one arm. [...]
(In relation to Seth’s material on the fund, I told Jane, it seems that creativity obviously has many more facets to it than we ordinarily think—if we need or want money, for example, with it just serving as a means to an end—our doing our work—it will be provided if we’re not closed to the idea. [...]
[...] She was very reserved about Seth possibly delivering a message for them. [...] I thought Seth could comment today, but I expected no detailed response there either at this time. [...]
[...] When I got home from 330 last night I found in the mail a letter from Maude Cardwell of Reality Change, the Seth newsletter she publishes in Austin, Texas. [...]
(Earlier this evening I reminded Jane of the conversation about cells, versus their components, that we’d had because of Seth’s material at 9:38 in Session 705. Some of tonight’s book work refers to the questions growing out of our talk I think, as does Seth’s brief clarification near the end of the session.)
I also suggest a rereading of the material on dreams and probable realities in chapters 14 and 15 of The Seth Material.
(The 706th session was held as scheduled last Wednesday night, and our guest, Tam Mossman, did witness it — but since Seth didn’t come through with any dictation for “Unknown” Reality during the session, it’s hereby deleted.
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
[...] Jane was dissociated as usual, and also quite relieved at Seth’s explanation. She had begun using her old typewriter for first drafts of her writings since leaving the gallery a few weeks ago, with the idea that since we do all the Seth material work on this machine, which is the best of the three we own, some wear and tear might be saved on it.
[...] Seth had not yet mentioned the nodule on her wrist, and we agreed that he was probably waiting until she attained a deeper state before he dealt with personal material of this sort.
(The last few paragraphs of the above material we thought to be an elaboration of Seth’s rather cryptic statement in the 97th session, page 72, to the effect that in some respects all planes or fields of existence are indeed by-products of others.
(Jane said she was “really out” while Seth gave the material on her wrist. [...]
In other portions of the Seth material these processes will be made very clear for those of you who desire to pursue the question further, or those who may be interested from a scientific point of view. [...] They allow you to materialize certain subjective experiences into three-dimensional reality. [...]
(Seth’s dictation on his book tonight was preceded by four pages of personal material that we have deleted. [...]
The intensity of a feeling or thought or mental image is, therefore, the important element in determining its subsequent physical materialization.
From 1963 until 1966, Rob and I worked alone, holding the twice-weekly sessions and following Seth’s instructions. I had several spontaneous out-of-body experiences during Seth sessions and while doing the exercise Seth calls psy-time. These checked out in physical reality and are recorded in my book, The Seth Material. Some of these episodes concerned strangers who had written to me. [...]
[...] I was incredulous at the instructions and information given by Seth, yet I’d already had enough experience to know that Seth’s “theoretical material” worked. As we followed it, our own results brought the material itself to life.
[...] Before I give some examples from our records, here is some of the material on projection that Seth gave us during that time. [...]
(Since Seth makes further reference to this incident, I’ll describe it briefly, though waking projections will not generally be discussed in this book which is devoted to dreams and related material. [...]
[...] (Pause; smile.) Seth’s material on action will help you here.
[...] After a minute, at 10:47, I said good night to each personality, figuring that Seth had been present even if unheard. [...] Her expression changed, she smiled, and I knew Seth would speak. [...]
[...] When Seth came through regularly she always knew beforehand of his emotional presence, she said, and so had no doubts or questions about beginning a session.
[...] When this occurs the primary physical construction, the camouflage material, loses its power. [...]
The material, the Seth material, will now serve as a cohesive binder in Ruburt’s classes. [...] For our material will indeed spread. [...]
[...] And while the discussions will begin with material giving specifics in your terms, this will be supplemented by other material in terms of electromagnetic realities, and also moment points.
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
I will give you theoretical material, and I hope that we shall implement it with our own demonstrations. [...]
(At the same time, on the occasions when she’d come half awake, Jane told herself that she remembered Seth’s material on expressing previously buried fears, and made strong efforts to go along with it by letting the feelings surface where she could encounter them. [...]
(Jane had no questions for Seth. I told her I had lots of them, but had been refraining from asking them for the most part until we see what we can learn from the material. [...]
(I said that I was quite aware that Seth had recently said that all actions are eventually redeemed—but what about in the meantime? [...] As I discussed the question Jane said she began to feel Seth around. [...]
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
[...] She was introduced to the Seth material by John Bradley, who has witnessed several sessions and read much of the material himself. Lorraine took her own shorthand notes of the material. [...]
(“Good evening, Seth.”)
[...] I doubt if this data would be entered on the record had not Seth mentioned it without prompting. [...]
(A companion prediction to this one, made by Seth at the same time and concerning the outbreak of a narcotics investigation in the Elmira area, within three months, developed as predicted.)
(Although we were both tired by the end of the session, I had the feeling that Jane, as Seth, was a bit reluctant to go too much into the affair with Prentice re The Seth Material, and ended the session rather abruptly at that point for that reason. [...]
[...] (To publicize Jane’s The Seth Material.)
[...] I had quite a few questions to ask, but since my anger had still been building up I now did not write them down, or Seth’s answers—which were very good, incidentally. [...] A sharp exchange with Seth followed, and I ended up furious—which I suppose was a good way to blow off steam. Seth insisted that the answers re Jane’s symptoms, and my own contributing attitudes, had already been given in past sessions, but were not being followed.
[...] (A point with which I can disagree.) Now you are dealing, through your creative endeavors, aside even from the psychic work, with highly subjective material; many people are completely unaware for great periods of time of their own mental and emotional states. [...] They are not ready as yet to handle their own subjective material or possibilities. [...]
(Seth/Jane scored many hits in the material dealing with Peg and Bill. [...] It developed that the notes Peg and Bill kept did not often coincide with Seth’s material.
(The session tonight did not dwell on the recent experiments however, although Seth did express himself as pleased because we were pleased. Jane has made copies of the clairvoyant material from the three sessions involving the Gallaghers; they are to write in their account of what actually transpired after each of Seth’s predictions or statements. [...]
(Quotes from Seth that follow, in caps as usual, are not verbatim for the most part, but close approximations. It will be remembered that Seth refers to Bill Gallagher as the Jesuit, and to Peg as the cat lover. Seth now speaks to them:)
(Seth told Peg and Bill there is constant communication between them telepathically. [...] Seth told Bill that he took his problems with him on vacation, especially the ulcer, and Bill heartily agreed. Seth then repeated some general suggestions concerning the ulcer, given in earlier sessions. [...]
Jane Roberts with some of the fifty looseleaf notebooks of Seth Material that have been filled to date. [...]
[...] Two years before her death she asked to attend a regular Seth session. Seth was quite serious and not as jovial as usual, and at the time I thought that he was being rather hard on her. [...] I am also sure that readers who understand and follow Seth’s ideas on health will find their own greatly improved.
Seth sessions are held in full light in the Butts’ living room. Jane’s husband, Rob, using his own shorthand system, takes down Seth’s words verbatim. Above, as Jane goes into trance, she—as Seth—removes her glasses and has thrown them onto the couch. [...]
