One line I’d forgotten put the situation rather clearly, though: I was afraid that Seth’s work and my own might have some fatal flaw to which I was blind, so that I suppose by trusting the inner self and individual inspiration, I might actually also be opening up that horrendous Pandora’s box. If you will forgive me for the analogy, imagine that your present self is like a suit of clothing that you have put on, and when you are looking for the nature of reality, imagine that you take this suit of clothing off in the same way that a child discards its clothing before playing in the water in the springtime. The self that you put by will be there when you return, no one will steal it. [...]

[...] You need to compensate by direct and aggressive physical action, either in a job that will relate you with others or in some aspect along those lines that will allow you to untangle the inner self and release your creative abilities. [...]

The very attempt to solve the physical problems brings out inner abilities. The very attempt to solve the physical problems often solves the inner problems that are being projected upon the physical reality. [...]

The sleeping personality is as close to the inner self as you will come in this existence, for here the personality is soon free of the camouflage concerns with which it must be involved in the waking condition.

At the same time, in psychoanalysis you are often programmed to believe that the “unconscious,” being the source of such dark secrets, cannot be counted upon as any bed of creativity or inspiration, and so you are denied the help that the inner portions of the self could give to your consciousness.

[...] I am also emphasizing the fact that the conscious mind is equipped to receive information from the inner self as well as the exterior universe.

When and if you manage to change your beliefs in that self-deceptive framework, then any suitable “forgotten” event from the past will be used as a catalyst. [...]

The sensations are a physical demonstration of an inner sense reaction on a psychic basis, or level, which you have not yet achieved, and cannot be expected to. The self would expand. In your relationship with your parents for example, such a psychic expansion of self would allow you to absorb your own awareness of their sometimes painful existence, and you would feel no wound yourself.

When such developments occur, then you have the awareness of the whole self, and the ego does not need to fear for its survival. The self can then act to help others, and can in no way be threatened.

And the inner self that controls your breathing does not need you to consciously discipline it. [...]

(I added that I’d had no idea that the idea of the Sinful Self occupied that prominent and basic a position in her life. It was beginning to look as if the Sinful Self concept occupied the central position in her beliefs. It would make a lot of sense, I said, if it were true, and would account for things like an obsession with work, giving up other life activities, etc.—all done in a disguised attempt to appease that Sinful Self that merrily carried on year after year.... “But in a funny way that may be okay,” I mused, “because if that’s it, we now know where we can grab hold of the Sinful Self, once we know what we’re doing, not groping around in a morass of suppositions and speculations.”)

In the light of this discussion, now, that self was as unrealistic at its end of the spectrum as the Sinful Self was at the other, for Ruburt felt that he was supposed to demonstrate a certain kind of superhuman feat, not only managing on occasion to uncover glimpses of man’s greater abilities, but to demonstrate these competently at the drop of a hat, willingly at the request of others. At the same time he believed he was the Sinful Self, and that expression was highly dangerous—so between those two frameworks, the psychological organization, he operated as best he could, still seeking toward the natural value fulfillment that was his natural heritage. [...]

So we must now show Ruburt the source of the Sinful Self to begin with, and convince him that such is not his natural self at all and to do so we will to some extent at least go into his early background. The main thrust, however, will be the need for expression and value fulfillment that to one extent or another has always been impeded by the beliefs inherent in the entire Sinful-Self concept. [...]

For this is a noninterval to the inner self. [...] One portion of you leaves the inner self to explore in depth a particular noninterval. To the inner self no time passes. [...]

[...] You can only get glimpses of truth and you can only understand and interpret these glimpses if you trust your inner self and your intuitions. [...]
