(Jane now paused in her delivery, which had become progressively slower, and I wondered if this would be all she would allow to come through on the subject.)

[...] Theoretically for example, if followed through, a deep trance leading to a deeper inside so to speak, would bring you ultimately to another outside. The outer ego for example would meet the inner ego, and vice versa.

[...] It would not have been so serious except that in the stable as a child, you could not understand how or why your father would so inflict pain upon the horse, slamming the hot shoe upon the wounded foot. [...]

You may if you wish consider the quality-depth principle as blowing like a wind through the spacious present, it indeed being like a wind in that it is known by its effects; and if you must think of it visually it would, perhaps, have a funnel shape. [...]

Whenever dates are mentioned, incidentally, I would suggest caution and attention, regardless of the reason given or the person to whom the date is supposed to be significant. [...]

[...] Jane and I haven’t been to Jerusalem, although we’d like to make the trip some day, but even if we did I don’t think it would be easy to identify the physical site of my “fourth Roman.” To do so would take much cautious study. For one thing, I’m sure that my imagery — and drawings — of Jerusalem’s fortifications would turn out to be much too meager in scale; surely those “real” works would be far more overpowering in height and mass. “What would a Roman soldier be doing up there?, I wondered. [...] I write ‘saw,’ yet it would be just as accurate to note that I sensed these figures. [...]

[...] Try as I would, I couldn’t make his image any clearer or closer, or induce it to change in any other manner. [...]

[...] By then it was obvious that in a couple of weeks Seth would be through with “Unknown” Reality, as we’d taken to calling it. For some time all of us present had been aware that as a single volume this new work would be more massive than we wanted it to be. [...] Not only would the expanded format be something out of the ordinary in itself, but it meant that with two volumes I’d have the room I needed for notes and references; excerpts from Jane’s ESP class sessions, as well as from “regular” sessions dated before and after the production time of “Unknown” Reality; a little of Jane’s poetry; and appendixes — all of which I thought would add extra dimensions of consciousness to the books. [...] The information from Seth would be there. The work produced would be different from the “same” work delivered over a longer time. Seth wouldn’t have our current daily activities to draw upon for some of his analogies, for instance, but in such cases I think he’d either call upon similar episodes from our pasts, or cast his material in different ways — which would yield the same results.

[...] We thought the new work would probably be a long one, but we hardly expected that it would require publication in two volumes.

[...] Not only would the reader be constantly involved in looking up specific items, but we felt that the shorter notes especially would be too far removed from their intimate positions within the sessions; we wanted these to enhance individual sessions directly without getting in the way, so I worked out a compromise which offers some sort of orderly presentation without being too rigid.

[...] Other people would read the same paper, yet all of them reacted in their own ways. [...] The bodybuilder would dismiss it without a thought.

[...] The things that paid off, the things that were indeed quite effective, were these: again, your chair suggestion —remind me to return to that, for I have not mentioned some other reasons why I would like it stressed—it being the chair; the table in the kitchen, with all of the implications of additional cooking and involvement; your remark (last week) that Ruburt’s face looked much better than it did in those old photographs; your bringing in the flowers; your lovemaking, which I will discuss; and Ruburt’s point-of-power exercises. [...]

You would go out of your way not to give such approval, by making a joke or whatever, because you did not believe that verbal communication should be used for such purposes. [...]

[...] If you fully trusted what I am telling you, you would understand that that activity changes even as the muscles in the legs might be different from one day to another.

[...] If that were the case, it would take more than a world-sized globe to contain the consciousness of simply one cell.

Ruburt (Jane) today received a letter from a man who would certainly be labeled a schizophrenic. [...]

[...] (With some irony:) It would not be entirely out of keeping, though somewhat exaggerated a statement, to claim that men who stockpile nuclear weapons in order to preserve peace are insane. [...]

[...] He adds a flavor to the world that would be missing otherwise, and through his very eccentricity, to some extent he shows other people that their rigid views of reality may indeed have chinks in them here and there.

[...] Of course we had no idea of what all those tests would cost, and weren’t billed when she was discharged, since test results weren’t in. A few nights later, evidently after I’d been wondering how much the bill would be I had a dream in color, in which I was informed of the amount of the bill —$800-odd dollars. [...] I was shocked—so much so that I woke up after the brief little dream, for my best guess had been that the bill would be between $400 and $500. [...]

[...] The cost of that little operation would also probably be astronomical—well over a thousand dollars, I’d say at a guess, so in light of the present bill from St. Joseph’s I doubt if we’d opt for it anyhow. [...]

[...] They may not have physical brains but they all have minds of their own as you would interpret it, and they are highly active. [...]

[...] Yet all the time far more important messages are there for you if you would once forget your questions and simply listen. [...]

Now what I am saying sounds extremely simple, easy, and it would make very uninteresting prose but the reality that exists within my words is vital and the reality that you can experience if you follow my words is vital. [...]

([Bette:] “During break Jane stood here talking to Dee  and as I stood and watched these two, Jane all of a sudden was a very little girl looking up at this man and the man was trying desperately to get Jane to say that she was sorry for something that she had done, and Jane would not say this. Now if I were you two, making a list of resolutions, my list would include feelings and attitudes. [...] I would not presume to make a list of resolutions for you, but in an imaginative endeavor this is what I pretend I would list if I were you—meaning you both. [...]

[...] The long working time—perhaps three years—spent on “Unknown” evidently allowed that project to accumulate strong psychic charges on my part; when doubts or challenges arise in conflict with the work on the book, I would react in uncomfortable ways occasionally.

[...] Sometimes dreams that seemed nonsense contained one clear, important image that shortly — within a few days — would appear in a different context entirely. In several cases, two or more future events would be condensed into one dream.

[...] She was very embarrassed because she would not have time to give proper notice to the school or landlord. [...] At the same time I saw in my mind’s eye a picture of the house into which she would move. [...]

[...] The information was really that the apartment in the house next door, on the corner, would be vacant. [...] I think I’d known the name all the while and in the dream translated it into action; the clothes episode would, then, really identify Anna and forsee the event in which she showed me the clothes closet.

[...] I was terrified — certain that an accident would result. [...]

[...] Mother and child were supported by welfare, and assisted over the years by a series of itinerant housekeepers—a number of these were prostitutes who, according to Jane, were periodically thrown out of “work” when town officials would shut down the “houses,” try to clean up gambling, and so forth. [...] (She would terrify the young Jane by stuffing cotton in her mouth and pretending she’d committed suicide, for example.) Jane also spent time in a strictly run Catholic orphanage. [...]

[...] Not only would the two women be emotionally tested and enriched across physical and psychological time, but so would their entities or whole selves.

[...] I can’t help wondering!) Portions of the latest scientific literature I have on hand, particularly that produced by physicists, contain references that not long ago would have been branded as metaphysical, or even worse.

I also think that if asked Seth would point out that since the concept of quantum mechanics is based upon the idea that everything we “know”—matter, energy, our sensual information—is made up of quanta, or the interactions of insubstantial fields that in turn, and quite paradoxically, produce very active subatomic packets or particles, then quantum mechanics is at least analogous with his statements that basically the universe is composed of consciousness itself. [...]

Such developments would mean the releasing and availability of added energy into your field, that would have endless possibilities in all directions. [...]

I would like to speak a few words concerning the nature of realities.

[...] There would be no room for anything else. [...]

[...] Why man so often mistrusts the dream reality would escape me, if I did not know the nature of the ego.

[...] There may be friends who would like to contact their own relatives. [...] But when you are ready, comparative strangers would be best, ideally speaking.

[...] In the dream state however what would appear to you as future lives are already familiar. [...]

[...] The brain itself contains knowledge that comes through the inner senses, and this knowledge would simply not be available to it, if it were dependent upon physical data completely.

[...] He also felt accused by you, believing that if he was using his abilities really fully, as you wanted him to, then there would have been a way provided so the woman would not die.

At the same time he was feeling that he would not be a great writer either, you were telling him he was using only about a tenth of his abilities, and so in both areas he was not living up to his expectations or yours, to his way of seeing. [...]

Some important blockages would therefore come when he tried to tell himself he could do something, such as walk downstairs correctly, when at the same time he did not believe it possible. [...]

I did have some interesting comments to make concerning your visit, but it can wait if you would like to retire early.

[...] and if you had fulfilled them, you would not be looking into the subjects that you are looking into now. You would not feel the need to look for answers. [...]

Now I ask you, what would Bega be doing on the wall?

Slow death in a hospital, or an experience with an illness, would be unthinkable to these same people. [...]

[...] To some extent the same can be said of wars, if you consider a war as a small infection; in the case of a world war, it would be a massive disease. [...]

None of this would particularly show in terms of symptoms until Ruburt began to sell. [...]

[...] The summer, with its implications of vacation, was added, however, as he knew it would be; so the structure of working was further evaded, it seemed particularly by warm weather, which inclination did not happen to fit his ideas of scheduled work.

[...] He was afraid of the cat, considering him wild and caged originally, as his mother had been in his interpretation, so he felt forced to help the cat (who did not have any love for him), as he felt before he had to help his mother—who would kill him if she had the chance.

[...] If Ruburt’s mother had been fixed Ruburt would have had a different mother and different background, granting Ruburt had come alive.
