Ruburt was correct. The meaning of the dream is as follows: In the beginning you and he are about to lecture or address small children, which means that you were both invoking the spontaneous, creative portions of yourselves, which in the truest sense are childlike. Later, a woman dies who is well-known to a group of people who are with Ruburt. The woman represents Ruburt’s old beliefs, the woman that he was, so to speak. All that are immediately salvaged are the inner organs, which Ruburt symbolically washes clean in a ritual indicative of washing away old beliefs, and of washing the inner organs clean—the act of inner cleanliness.

(Jane described her own vivid dream of last night, which I can only approximate here. It involved Jane washing the internal organs of a woman who’d died and had been well-known to a group of people—someone like Jane herself. Involved also was a puppy and other elements. I thought the dream very positive, and showed that Jane was shedding old beliefs and starting anew with new ones.

[...] of course, was very upset by my chest difficulty, telling me after her nap that she was very worried, bothered of course by the fact that she’d asked me to wash windows. It will be remembered that one of my stronger reactions last month had come about after I washed windows, too. [...]

(I must admit the next day, as I type these notes, that regeneration or no, I had a “relapse” into the old chest difficulty this afternoon after washing the bedroom windows at Jane’s request. [...]

(All distortions and ugly images are now washed away by the infinite ocean of love and peace flowing through her, and it is so.

The tub was next interpreted as a washing machine in a secondary level that was in itself a symbol leading to the next interpretation, belonging to a past life, that of an old tub that leaked. In his dream the washing machine leaked, leading him into a third level, where the tub was a symbol for the old ship that leaked when you, Joseph, were a passenger on your way to Boston in a past life.

At the same time the word tub referred also to a friend of his, a woman whose maiden name was Tubbs, and informed him subconsciously that she was in difficulties, as when the tub or old washing machine leaked. [...]

[...] The amazing thing to me was that Larry was frantically busy at a wringer-type washing machine that was gushing forth a stream of water from its outlet, into a bucket that was almost full.
